Great Plates of Late Around South Baltimore

Crab Tots from Abbey Burger Bistro

When visitors come to Baltimore they know to try crabs, crab cakes, crab soup, crab dip, and other local seafood dishes, but I think it would be a shame if anyone came here and didn’t try tator tots with crab dip. It’s a delicious appetizer that has been popping up at more places around town.

The Crab Tots at Abbey Burger Bistro features a meaty crab dip, topped with cheddar jack cheese, on top of perfectly-cooked tator tots. I swear the dish gets better with every bite, and they are definitely worth saving room for (…while also getting one of Abbey’s award-winning burgers.)

Roast Turkey BLT at Mother’s

I love a good turkey sandwich and the Roast Turkey BLT at Mother’s Federal Hill Grille is one of my new favorites. The roasted turkey breast with jalapeño bacon, tomato, lettuce, avocado, and chipotle mayo on a ciabatta roll packs a lot of fresh flavors with a touch of spice. The sandwich goes really well with the housemade potato chips.

Fish Tacos at Don’t Know

Fish tacos served with with seared tuna really takes this popular dish to the next level for me. The Fish Tacos at Don’t Now Tavern are wrapped in flour tortillas and come with shredded pepper slaw, cucumber salad, and spicy remoulade on top of seared tuna. The tuna is an excellent quality and the toppings added a nice kick. I will be ordering them again.

Currywurst Sausage at Das Bier Haus

Das Bier Haus has a lot of sausages that go well with its large selection of beers. On a recent visit I went with the Currywurst, a pork sausage seasoned with curry and spices and topped with sauerkraut. It was served with house-cut fries and curry ketchup. It was a great combination of sweet, sour, and salty with a little bit of spice. Make sure to order a pretzel too!

Sausage Pizza at Zella’s

Zella’s Pizzeria is a two-time winner of SouthBMore’s Best SoWeBo business and its pizza is a big reason why. I recently got one of the hand-tossed pies with Italian sausage. The tomato sauce had a lot of flavor, the crust was just right, and the sausage and cheese were both delicious. It wasn’t my first pizza from Zella’s and it certainly won’t be my last.
