Recent Business Closures and Relocations on Charles Street in Federal Hill

There is a number of newly-vacant storefronts on S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. Below are details.

828 S. Charles St.

Plantacea closed earlier this month at 828 S. Charles St. and is promising to open a new location. Owner Lisa Heckman posted the following to Instagram:

What I thought would take a couple of weeks, to sell inventory not coming with me, took essentially only one day! I didn’t see that coming! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making it such an amazing and memorable day. I was reminded of just how many people have walked through these doors and have made an imprint on my journey. I cannot wait to share Plantacea 2.0 with you ๐Ÿ’š

There are just a few plants and a few pots left. I will be open tomorrow, Sunday, for people picking up larger items they purchased. Feel free to stop by to check out what is left.

Next week starts the packing and cleaning ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ I’ll bring up a million nursery pots and other items for giveaway and my door will be open.

Until we meet again, look for IG updates on my location and re-opening!

xx,
Lisa

The space now has a ‘for rent’ sign in the window.

906 S. Charles St.

Glow To Go Skin Bar recently closed at 906 S. Charles St. The storefront currently has a ‘for rent’ sign in the window.

910 S. Charles St.

Sugar Boats Goods closed yesterday at 910 S. Charles St. Owner Joyce Lombardi posted the following to social media on February 12th:

Well, my dear Sugar Boaters. The time has come. We aren’t renewing our lease. ๐Ÿ™ That means all of our sustainable local goods, (plus tables, lamps, chairs and everything else) is 50 percent off, starting Saturday February 18th. But fear not. Carla @phinasfinelinens will carry some of our items so stay tuned!

As for me, I’m returning from whence I came: full time lobbying on violence and energy issues.

I loved it here, you all are tremendous. But I can’t do both. So come in please and help me wind down our lovely spot. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’› we will be open Saturdays 12-5 through mid-March.

The space is now vacant.

912 S. Charles St.

Upholster Maurice House of Art has left its storefront at 912 S. Charles St. and relocated to 1100 Wicomico St. Suite 415 in Pigtown. The space is now vacant.

1005 S. Charles St.

Last year, Baltimore Lash Bar relocated from 1005 S. Charles St. to 8 W. West St. The company posted the following to Facebook on May 1, 2022:

Our Baltimore location has moved to a new spot!

Thank you for being patient with us during this transition.

As most of you know, our landlord in Baltimore sold the building. Here’s the good news: our new Federal Hill location is only two blocks away from our original address AND it has free 2 hour street parking or a garage 1 block away.

Our new address is 8. West West Street, Baltimore, MD 21230.

We are above Marren Architects. Come in the door and up the steps to the left. Our door is at the top of the steps on the right!

We will have better atmosphere, a more beautiful space and lots more room!

We can’t wait for you to join us. Please call the lash bar or text your tech if you have any questions or cannot find us.

As always, remember, if you refer a new client and they use your name, you will get 35% off your next fill!

The company also has locations in Bel Air and Severna Park.

1016 S. Charles St.

Mi & Yu Noodle Bar closed this month at 1016 S. Charles St. as owner Edward Kim is retiring. He sold his Hampden location and it is now under new ownership. Read SouthBMore.com’s article about the closure.

The space is now vacant.

1030 S. Charles St.

Crystal Moll Gallery relocated earlier this month, moving from 1030 S. Charles St. to 248 S. Conkling Street, Gallery C in Highlandtown. On January 11th, Owner Crystal Moll posted the following to Facebook:

After 13 years. January 21st will be the final day at my gallery in Federal Hill. I will miss my sweet gallery here on Charles Street. In appreciation and to hopefully lighten our move…I am offering my work including originals, prints and gifts at a 25% discount. This starts today and ends on the 21st. Thanks so for all the support!! That’s a Wrap Artists: #BennettVadnais #BethBathe #DeborahKommalan #CarolLeeThompson #TimKelly #KathyDaywalt #VladDuchev #StephanieMarzella.

A salon is currently being built out in Crystal Moll Gallery’s former space.

1055 S. Charles St.

A boutique called LUS closed recently at 1055 S. Charles St. The space is now vacant.

While there are now new vacancies, there have been a number of filled vacancies around the area in recent months. This includes a new art gallery going into a 2,893 sq. ft. space at 1125 Light St.; Chateu de MarMutt opening this month at 1134 S. Charles St.; Tre Frateilli opening this month at 1121 Light St.; and Cocentric Education Solutions opening in August at 1210 Light St.

New York’s ‘Bob’s Pizza Tour’ Launches in Baltimore

Bob’s Pizza Tour, a pizza tour company that started in New York City in 2019, is now doing tours in Baltimore. Bob Hanlon, founder of Bob’s Pizza Tour, relocated to Baltimore last year and spent recent months getting more familiar with the pizza scene in Baltimore.

The pizza tours, during which attendees walk to different pizza venues within one neighborhood, take place on Saturdays or Sundays. Bob’s Pizza Tour is offering separate tours in Hampden, around Patterson Park, in South Baltimore, and around Harbor East. There will be one tour for each area a month as the company gets started in Baltimore.

The first tour in Baltimore was this past Saturday in Hampden and the Patterson Park tour is scheduled to follow on February 19th. The first South Baltimore tour will take place on Sunday, February 26th at 1pm.

Hanlon is looking to include pizzerias such as Pizza di Joey, Barfly’s, Hersh’s, and Diamondback Brewing Company on the South Baltimore tour.

The Hampden tour featured Paulie Gee’s Hampden and Arthouse for pizza, and Dangerously Delicious Pies for dessert pies. The Patterson Park tour will go to Matthew’s Pizza, Verde, and Johnny Rad’s Pizzeria Tavern. Hanlon hopes to inlcude places like Joe Benny’s and Harbor East Deli on the Harbor East tour.

Tours still take place in three locations in Manhattan, New York.

“As someone who relocated from New York City down to Hampden, they are definitely two different pizza cities. There are certainly not as many pizzerias in Baltimore as New York, but there is a lot to try,” said Hanlon. “It’s great that there’s history here. We have places like Matthew’s that have been around for many decades and generations and continue to make amazing pies that people love to go out and try.”

“Recently we got new places like Underground Pizza which opened up during the pandemic. It really exploded onto the scene and was able to quickly expand into Towson and Silver Spring. Then you have Paulie Gee’s in Hampden which has been around a few years and continues to bring new offerings including a slice offering to accommodate the lunch crowd in the neighborhood,” said Hanlon.

“Across the board there a lot of great places and different styles of pizza. New York-Style, Neapolitan, Detroit-style pizza, pan pies, anything and everything you can imagine in the pizza world, it’s happening in Baltimore,” he continued. “With the pizza tours, I’m really excited to be able to get people out of their house and their comfort zone, and take them to new places they haven’t been to before as they try new pizzas and really expand their palate.”

Tours cost $60 per person and cover the pizza. Guests can buy their own alcoholic beverages or soft drinks separately.

During the tours, Hanlon gives history and pizza baking details at all the places and asks guests to rank the pizzas.

The first rule of the tour is “phones eat first.” Hanlon encourages people to post their pictures to social media, which has led to a large Instagram following for Bob’s Pizza Tour of more than 38,000.

“It’s basically a bar crawl, but for pizza,” said Hanlon. “There’s no better way in my opinion to experience a city than by trying the food. And pizza, in my humble opinion, is the best food to eat.”

“I’m excited to continue to meet a lot of new Baltimore friends and take them out on a really awesome afternoon or evening in the city,” said Hanlon.

Levantine Restaurant ‘Ammoora’ Now Open at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Federal Hill

Levantine restaurant Ammoora has opened at 751 Key Hwy. at The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Federal Hill. The 5,800 sq. ft. commercial space was last occupied by Sip Wine and Dine which closed more than six years ago.

Ammoora is owned by South Baltimore resident Jay Salkini who founded telecommunications business Tecore Networks in 1991. Salkini enjoys putting teams together and bringing commercial spaces back to life. He is also a partner in Art of Balance Wellness Spa at The Ritz-Carlton Residences.

Levant is a region of the Eastern Mediterranean that includes Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Palestine, and Israel. Salkini was born in Syria where his family produces olive oil.

Ammoora chef Dima Al-Chaar is a native of Damascus, Syria and is a culinary, hospitality, and restaurant management graduate from La Salle College in Montreal, Canada. She has worked in 17 different countries and has helped open 46 restaurants. She moved to the United States last year to open Ammoora. Al-Chaar was a contestant on Top Chef Middle East and uses her mother’s Levantine recipes in many of her dishes.

Salkini took on a full renovation of the restaurant space to “have the heart of Levantine culture,” according to Ammoora chief marketing officer Markie Britton. She said the goal was to make it very “warm and inviting.”

The dining room was designed to have the feel of a Mediterranean courtyard. It has light colors, a water fountain, different styles of tile, and paintings installed by local artist Kelly L. Walker. The dining room leads out to a new outdoor patio. In the warmer months, the dining room will open up to the patio.

The bar room in the front of the restaurant was designed as a contemporary lounge.

Al-Chaar’s menu at Ammoora features a lot of shareable mezze plates as well as some main dishes. The menu includes salads such as tabouleh and fattoush; soups such as spicy lentil tomato soup and barley yogurt soup; and different dips including three types of hummus, baba ghanouj, and keshkรฉ.

Cold mezze plates include yalangi, which are rolled vine leaves with rice and vegetables; hurrak isba’o which is a green lentil dish; and salmon and beef tartar dishes. Warm mezze dishes include different meat rolls with beef, chicken, shrimp, and vegetables.

Ammoora has four different mankoushรฉs (flat breads) that are cooked in its brick oven. Ammoora offers a cheese flatbread as well as the Lahm B-Ajin Mdalal with seasoned minced beef mixed with yogurt, pomegranate molasses and tahini, pomegranates, and lemon wedges; and the Mfasakh Batenjen with chargrilled eggplant, lemon vinaigrette, fresh thyme, tahini, pomegranate molasses, and sesame seeds.

Main dishes include a beef short rib, zaatar crusted salmon, chicken skewers, and a roasted cauliflower steak.

The menu also includes Levantine desserts and sides.

The bar program at Ammoora includes Lebanese wines and cocktails including a date-infused old fashioned.

Ammoora is open Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm to 930pm. The bar is open until 11pm on the weekends.

The team at Ammoora prefers for diners to make reservations. The restaurant is also available for private parties. It also offers valet parking.

Markie said they would like to add brunch in the summer and will also consider adding lunch hours in the future.

Ammoora has approximately 45 employees.

Ammoora is pledging 10 percent of its proceeds in February to assist relief efforts following the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey on Monday.

“Our roots originated in Syria, and our mission when opening Ammoora was to introduce to Marylanders the love and generosity of the Levantine community by showcasing its culture, cuisine, and hospitality,” said Salkini in a press release. “Today, we continue our mission of generosity and pledge support to those impacted by this tragic earthquake.”

Mi & Yu Noodle Bar to Close in Federal Hill

Mi & Yu Noodle Bar will close on February 15th after almost eight years in Federal Hill. Owner Edward Kim said he is ready to retire after a long career as a chef and restaurant owner.

At one point Mi & Yu Noodle Bar had four locations. Kim sold The Rotunda location, which is now under new ownership. The location at Mount Vernon Marketplace closed in June of last year. There was also a location in Arlington, Virginia.

Kim told SouthBMore.com he tried selling the Federal Hill location, but he could not find a buyer. He noted The Rotunda location has 100 percent more in sales than the Federal Hill location.

Kim said the Federal Hill location, which was the original location, experienced growth in 2015 t0 2017 and was stagnant in 2018 and 2019, before it “really fell off” in 2020 during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that ramen is more seasonal and tougher to sell in the summer.

Mi & Yu sells customizable noodle bowls including ramen, as well as bao, sandwiches, and Korean wings.

Kim will spend the next year wrapping things up in Baltimore before moving to Mexico for a few years. After that he plans on traveling the world.

Originally from Bronx, New York, Kim took jobs as a chef in Washington, D.C. before moving to Baltimore in 2001 to help open Asian-fusion restaurant Ixia in Mount Vernon. Soon after that he co-owned Soignรฉ in Riverside, took different chef jobs after it closed, and launched Mi & Yu in 2015.

About his career in the kitchen, Kim said, “It was challenging and at times rewarding. It builds a lot of character.” He said in another life he would’ve majored in finance and been a trader on Wall Street.

Mi & Yu Noodle Bar will have a limited menu until it closes.
