HarborQue Closes in Federal Hill, Launches Food Truck

HarborQue closed its Federal Hill restaurant at 1125 S. Charles St. in April. HarborQue had a BBQ restaurant in South Baltimore for 10 years, including five years on Lawrence St. in Locust Point before its former building was demolished to make way for the Anthem House development.

Owner Kelley Stewart told SouthBMore.com that she wants to focus on catering which has been HarborQue’s “money maker.” HarborQue maintains a presence in South Baltimore as it hosts Wednesday Box Lunches at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Locust Point.

HarborQue also recently launched a food truck which will make its way around the area. Stewart told SouthBMore.com that they will additionally be opening a commercial kitchen.

HarborQue’s former Charles St. space has been leased by a new restaurant concept, which will be announced next month. The new tenant is applying for HarborQue’s seven-day beer and wine license.

BOPA Announces 16 Free Concerts in New SoBo Summer Music Series

Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) Release:

New SoBo Summer Music Series Features Free Concerts in South Baltimore
from June through September

The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) in partnership with Youth Resiliency Institute, Baltimore City Recreation and Parks, Catholic Charities, and the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership presents the SoBo Summer Music Series. The SoBo Summer Music Series is a sequence of free concerts at various locations throughout South Baltimore featuring jazz, blues and contemporary house music. The series aims to activate greenspaces and community gathering locations in less frequented neighborhoods, with a particular focus on Cherry Hill, Westport, Lakeland, Sharp Leadenhall and Carroll Park neighborhoods.

South Baltimore is the entrance point for most visitors to the city, coming in off I-95 from the south, and home to some of the city’s major attractions: Fort McHenry, Oriole Park at Camden Yards and M&T Bank Stadium. Those who dig a little further into South Baltimore will find a vibrant dining and nightlife scene, as well as venerable, but less visited neighborhoods that define what it is to be “authentic” Baltimore.

A full schedule of all events included in the SoBo Summer Music Series is below. Most events are produced specifically for the series, while others are existing events with a music component, such as the farmers’ market at the Baltimore Museum of Industry and the Federal Hill Jazz Festival.  In addition to the concerts, some events have pre-show activities such as music workshops, which are also listed below. For more information on the events, visit http://www.promotionandarts.org/sobo-summer-music-series or call 410-752-8632.

When involved in any group rhythmic alchemy event, these relationships are based on a simple set of unwritten guidelines. When adhered to, these guidelines can help direct a group of players to their highest musical potential, creating a fun and exciting musical experience while enabling an individual to merge comfortably into an ongoing drumming circle without being obtrusive.

Abu the Flute Maker – Musical Instruments on the Go…

Tuesday, June 19, 3pm (Cherry Hill Shopping Center)

Friday, June 29, 5:00-6:30pm (Middle Branch Park)

Saturday, August 4, 5:00-6:30pm (Carroll Park)

William Emerson, better known as Abu the Flutemaker is a Youth Resiliency Institute Master Artist in Residence and Baltimore native who has been making musical instruments out of found objects for the past 43 years. As a child, he discovered his ability to create music out of almost anything—a chair, a bedpost, a clothes hanger, for example. He could also make flutes. With his perfect pitch and uncanny ability to know just where to place the openings for air, his flutes create music with an ethereal quality. His talent, of course, “didn’t count” in school.  Now he has his own group that makes music from a variety of homemade wind and percussion instruments. He travels from school to school demonstrating to children that each one of us has value and attempting to nurture the creative ability in each child he meets.

Tuesday, June 19, 6pm (Cherry Hill Shopping Center)

Dance classes often feature movements from the Casssamance Region of Senegal, West Africa … movements that are chosen because of they bring an upright flowing beauty while at the same time giving the spirit that follows the path of the rhythm that is intrinsic to the pulsating, pounding wonderfully repetitious, yet always unique beat of Africa.

SalsaNow – Salsa Workshops

Saturday, August 4, 5:00-6:30pm (Carroll Park)

SalsaNow was formed out of love for the music and dance and a passion for sharing the experience and joy of dancing with others. Niss and Alexandra Albaig are very active in the Baltimore Salsa community as instructors, promoters, organizers, and ambassadors of dance. They are committed to supporting and growing the dance community through professional instruction, fellowship and camaraderie.

Five South Baltimore Restaurants Honored by the Food Network

Food Network recently published an article titled, “The Best Places to Eat in Baltimore.” Five restaurants with locations in South Baltimore made the list.

Sandwiches – DiPasquale’s

DiPasquale’s, which has its original location in Highlandtown, opened a second location last year at HarborView in Federal Hill. From the article:

DiPasquale is a famous Italian surname around Baltimore, for one easy-to-understand reason: This clan can cook, and they’ve been bringing it since 1914. Whether you’re in Highlandtown or Harborview, these hybridized grocery store-deli-casual restaurants have you covered, especially when what you’re craving comes between bread. Homemade meatball, chicken parm, pressed panini stuffed with mortadella and roasted peppers, and the house special Real Italian sub are but a few of the can’t-miss sandwich picks.

Burger – Abbey Burger Bistro

Abbey Burger Bistro first opened in Federal Hill. It also has locations in Fells Point and Ocean City. From the article:

A welcoming bar and grill in busy Federal Hill, the Abbey lures serious burger enthusiasts with its creative signature creations, including the Greek-inspired Lamb Burger dressed in feta and herbed yogurt; B’more-to-the-core patties bathed in homemade crab dip; and a duck served Korean-style with spicy gochujang. But ask for the build-a-burger checklist if you’d like to flex your inner grill jockey. Unconventional meat options (bison! shrimp!), a variety of roll alternatives (pitas, lettuce wraps, tortillas), and nearly 60 different cheeses, sauces and toppings offer plenty of ways to go custom in Charm City.

Kid-Friendly – Breaking Bread

Breaking Bread opened in Pigtown in 2015. From the article:

Caterer-turned-restaurateur Kimberly Ellis owns and operates Breaking Bread with her husband, Edward, and she’s also a mother and grandmother — so it’s no surprise that their Pigtown BYOB goes out of its way to make the entire family happy. In warm, sunny environs comfortable for all comers, they offer crowd-pleasing cooking prepared with a touch more flair than you’ll find in the average home kitchen — look for their signature sweet-and-spicy “stickywings,” plus burgers, salads, seafood and more. But there are also many thoughtful kid-friendly dishes designed to make things a little easier on parents. It’s the perfect menu to explore as you gather for one of their regular game nights, when the restaurant opens its tables up to families looking to spend some old-fashioned quality time together over board games and conversation

Local Hang – Idle Hour

Idle Hour is a longtime staple on Fort Ave. in Federal Hill/Riverside. From the article:

In a city dotted with dozens of well-worn tappies, Idle Hour stands out thanks to its insistence on being itself. The unassuming South Baltimore bar, plugging along since the early aughts, is dimly lit in the most-soothing sense of the term, its broken-in stools populated by easygoing locals listening to whatever’s spinning on the turntables (BYO records on nights without DJs). They’ve got all the stuff you’d expect from a quality hang (local drafts, local art), along with other stuff you wouldn’t — see the inexhaustible supply of Chartreuse, more commonly associated with high-end cocktail bars.

Barbecue – Smoke

Smoke, which began in Cockeysville, opened a stall at Cross Street Market. That stall is currently closed, but will reopen next year when the Cross Street Market renovation has been completed. From the article:

You’ll smell Josh White before you see him. Slinging out of a humble stall in soon-to-be-revamped Cross Street Market, the outgoing pitmaster is the meat man behind Smoke, which has grown into the city from its original outpost due north, in Cockeysville. If you see the sesame-studded Korean sticky ribs, get them before they sell out, but know that permanent menu items, like the Notorious P.I.G. (a Carolina-style pulled pork sandwich), won’t steer you wrong.
