Medical Cannabis Dispensary Culta Opens on Key Highway in Federal Hill

Medical cannabis (marijuana) dispensary Culta opened at 215 Key Hwy. in Federal Hill last week. The 2,500 sq. ft. space, which underwent a renovation, was the former home of BB&T.

Culta has a group of owners and investors and is led by President Mackie Barch. In addition to its dispensary in Federal Hill, Culta also has a 36,000 sq. ft. cultivation facility and processing lab in Cambridge. Barch said Culta has invested more than $11 million into the business.

Barch said Culta focused in on Maryland’s District 46, which includes South and Southeast Baltimore and which is allowed three dispensaries by Maryland law, as where they wanted to open. Culta joins medical cannabis dispensary Pure Life Wellness in Federal Hill, which opened earlier this year.

The Culta team loves the location on Key Hwy. because of its large windows that let in a lot of natural light and because it overlooks the Baltimore Inner Harbor. The space was designed by Curry Architects and features polished concrete floors and wood countertops.

Barch talked about the dark “porn store like” look of many dispensaries in California and Colorado and said they wanted to do the opposite. “We really wanted to get away from the secretive look of dispensaries, open up the space, let a lot of light in, and make it a first-class medical facility,” Barch told SouthBMore.com.

Culta is growing and developing more than 400 strains of cannabis in Cambridge and will likely be offering about 45 strains to the market in the near future. Culta’s products will be sold in Federal Hill as well as at other Maryland dispensaries. Culta is one of 15 growers in Maryland.

Culta strains are hand-trimmed and Barch described the curing process as a “long, methodical, slow process.”

Barch said that he has received no pushback for the location in Federal Hill, but the process of finding a location for the cultivation facility and processing lab was a challenge. “We went into a lot of small towns with affordable industrial spaces and got a lot of ‘heck no’ and ‘what about the children’ type stuff,” said Barch.

That’s when Maryland State Senator Adelaide (Addie) C. Eckhardt, who represented Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot, and Wicomico Counties, came to the rescue, according to Barch. He said that Senator Eckhardt is a conservative Republican who had reservations about cannabis, but she told Barch, “my people need jobs,” and made it happen. Barch said Senator Eckhardt got Culta plugged in with the Cambridge City Council as well.

Culta now has more than 40 employees in Cambridge at “above average wages,” according to Barch. He said that Culta has brought back several Maryland natives who went to other states to work in the cannabis industry.

Medical marijuana legislation was passed in Maryland in 2015, and Culta began its journey soon after. Barch keeps a close eye on legislation in this evolving industry. Medical marijuana is now legal in 28 states and Washington D.C., and recreational marijuana use is now legal in eight states and Washington D.C. Marijuana is not legal on a Federal level.

Barch said this gray area and the pushback on marijuana from President Donald J. Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions has been helpful for small businesses in the cannabis industry. “If it was a homerun right now, you’d get the big alcohol and pharma companies pushing us out,” said Barch.

But, Barch also noted that because of the cannabis industry’s illegality, you cannot fund it on bank loans and that cannabis companies cannot write-off expenses on Federal taxes.

Barch said that Culta’s business plan is designed to be profitable whether or not recreational marijuana is ever approved in Maryland. “We will go where the market tells us to go and we will adopt our business model accordingly,” said Barch.

Barch noted that six of the seven Democrat candidates for Governor, excluding Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, have voiced support for recreational marijuana. He is unsure of the position of Republican Governor Larry Hogan, who is running for re-election, but said he’s been greatly supportive of medical marijuana. Barch said that medical marijuana is not taxed since it’s a medicine and therefore the State is not making any revenue. He thinks this might lead to a push for recreational use which would generate taxable State income.

Barch is a big believer in cannabis. “It’s a life saver for a lot of people and it has impacted my life,” he said.

Barch believes in plant-based wellness, which he noted was the predominant form of wellness before the rise of pharmaceuticals in the 1850s, and that cannabis can be effective in bringing down healthcare costs and as a tool to fight the opioid epidemic.

Qualifying medical conditions for medical cannabis in Maryland include cachexia, anorexia, wasting syndrome, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures, severe or persistent muscle spasms, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain.

At Culta, Barch said they are selling “high-craft quality” cannabis that comes as flowers for smoking, extracts, and in vape pens. Culta will sell products from other growers as well. Prices will be $50 to $60 for an 1/8 ounce of flower, and $70 to $80 for a half a gram of oil.

The dispensary will have nine employees including armed security before it opens and after it closes. The cannabis will be stored inside a safe in a vault. Customers must have a Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) ID card to enter the dispensary.

Culta’s dispensary is open every day from 10am to 8pm.

South Baltimore Little League Parade This Saturday

Celebrating its 61st year of youth baseball in South Baltimore, the South Baltimore Little League (SBLL) will be hosting its annual parade tomorrow at 11am. The parade will begin at Federal Hill Park, travel south on Riverside Ave., and turn east on E. Fort Ave. before ending at the baseball facility at 1101 E. Fort Ave.

A local fire truck will lead the parade. It will be followed by the color guard and formation marchers from the Fort McHenry Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps, and then by The Fort McHenry Guard Fife & Drum Corp.

Grand Marshall’s for the parade are Candidate for Governor and Lieutenant Governor – Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker and Deputy Attorney General Elizabeth Embry. SBLL said that other VIPs expected include the Maryland General Assembly Team 46 members of Senator Bill Ferguson, Delegate Brooke Lierman, Delegate Luke Clippinger, and Delegate Robbyn Lewis, as well as District 46 Candidate Dea Thomas.

The parade is expected to have two to three marching bands, 33 baseball and softball teams, and five to seven mascots from local businesses and schools. Team sponsors will be marching as well.

SBLL will be honoring some of its longest serving volunteers, including:

Quinn Hren – 26 years of service (and this year’s President)
Linda Ruff – 36 years of service (and this year’s Player Agent)
Dave Eishehardt – 39 years of service (and this year’s Treasurer)

The event is expected to wrap up around 1230pm and a full slate of baseball games will follow. The parade is coordinated by SBLL Vice President Michael Brown.

SBLL is still looking for additional parade volunteers (more information and signup information is available here).

SBLL owns its Locust Point facility, which will have a fresh now look this year as a result of an agreement with McHenry Row Developer Mark Sapperstein of 28 Walker for more than $250,000 in improvements. 28 Walker has also agreed to a five-year landscaping agreement. The facility is surrounded on three sides by McHenry Row.

The now-completed improvements include:

  • Walk-in gate between fields 2 & 3
  • New fencing and landscaping along Fort Ave.
  • New backstop and dugouts for field 2
  • New fencing around fields 1 & 2
  • Re-grading of fields 1 & 2 with all new sod and infield dirt
  • Scoreboard for field 2
  • Electricity to fields 2 & 3
  • Install batting cage on concrete pad
  • 8 new commercial grade picnic tables
  • 8 new commercial grade trash cans
  • Removal of old wood and concrete bleachers and replaced with new metal bleachers
  • Paving of gravel road leading to fields 3 & 4 and clean up of the same area
  • Removal of shipping containers and old carnival trailer currently used for storage and replaced with an 800 sq. ft. building

This is the second round of improvements by 28 Walker, which added new turf, backstops, dugouts, fencing, and landscaping around the perimeter to fields 3 and 4 in 2015.

Brown told SouthBMore.com that the renovations to the facility have been great, and that discussions are ongoing for a phase 3 of improvements.

As part of the agreement, SBLL has granted an easement that allows 28 Walker to use eight feet of land behind fields 1 and 2 to install a new sidewalk along Porter St.

SBLL previously maintained the fields which were gifted to them by Coca-Cola in 1997. In 2013, Domino Sugar donated a new back stop and dugouts to field 1. Under Armour has also made donations including a scoreboard on field 1.

SBLL also added a three-tread softball league this year.

BGE Installs Trash Elimination Device “TED” on the Middle Branch

Today at its 72-acre Spring Gardens campus in South Baltimore, BGE showed off its new Trash Elimination Device, also known as TED. The waste collection system is at an open swale at the end of the Heath Street storm water drain. The drain collects storm water and litter from more than 60 acres of the South Baltimore Peninsula neighborhoods.

The water drain is listed as “impaired” for trash by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Since its initial pilot run in November 2017, TED has collected more than 450 pounds of trash.

TED was conceptualized by Michael Martino, a BGE gas operator who works on site and noticed the litter pouring into the Middle Branch, especially after a storm. “I saw something that could have a positive impact on the community, the bay, and the environment,” said Martino.

BGE worked with KCI Technologies, and Pasadena’s Clearwater Mills, LLC, the creators of Mr. Trash Wheel, to develop TED. While water wheels like Mr. Trash Wheel are ideal for rivers and streams, the new TED prototype is something that can be used on drains.

TED traps trash in a cage and the team at Clearwater Mills manually transfers it to an adjacent dumpster which is then taken to a nearby Wheelabrator energy-from-waste facility. TED is powered by solar panels.

BGE spent approximately $125,000 on TED.

“TED is a great example of how private interests can align with the public good,” said Calvin G. Butler, chief executive officer of BGE, in a press release. “I’m proud of the BGE employees who went above and beyond to develop an innovative solution that is so beneficial to our neighbors and to the Chesapeake Bay. They truly exemplify our purpose of powering a cleaner and brighter future for our customers and communities.”

Clearwater Mills now has three water wheels on the Patapsco River with Mr. Trash Wheel on the Jones Falls at the Inner Harbor, Professor Trash Wheel on Harris Creek in Canton, and the recently-installed Captain Trash Wheel at Masonville Cove on the Middle Branch in Brooklyn.

John Kellet and Daniel Chase, co-owners of Clearwater Mills, said it will likely take a total of five water wheels and six devices like TED to solve the litter problem in the Patapsco River. They noted that the biggest problem for the Middle Branch remains the Gwynns Falls. A water wheel is in the works for the Gwynns Falls and has received funding commitments from  The South Baltimore Gateway Partnership and Sagamore Development.

There is another runoff stream on BGE’s campus and the company is currently looking into another device. This stream collects trash and runoff from about 100 acres near the stadiums.

The team from BGE and Clearwater Mills said the ultimate goal is to educate people on where their litter ends up and to prevent litter from entering the waterways. They noted that trash from the Patapsco River can eventually make its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Clearwater Mills has 12 water wheel locations, including in California, Toronto, Honolulu, and Indonesia. Wheels are sent in shipping containers and assembled on site. Kellet and Chase said they are currently in the development phase for projects all over the world.

Feed More B’more This Saturday at Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School

The Foundry Baltimore Press Release:

In Baltimore City, 3 in 4 children are considered food insecure, meaning they aren’t sure where their next meal is coming from. Many of these children receive their only meals for the day at school. On April 29th at 9:30 and 11 am, The Foundry is partnering with Generosity Feeds to address food insecurity in Baltimore in an event called Feed More B’More. This collaborative event will take place at Francis Scott Key Elementary/Middle School (1425 E. Fort Ave, Baltimore, MD 21230) and will mobilize over 300 volunteers to package 10,000+ meals in 2 hours. The meals will then be donated to the Maryland Food Bank and to local schools and distributed back to children in Baltimore through programs like the Food Bank’s School Pantry Program. In the last 4 years, The Foundry has created over 50,000 meals for hungry kids in our city.

Feed More B’more is open to the public. Participants are encouraged to register before hand because walk up registration may be limited. Donations are also being collected to support this event. Every $1 provides one meal. Participants may register or donated at generosityfeedsbaltimore.org (All donations are tax deductible).

The Foundry is a non-denominational, Christian Church, whose aim is to be a “church for the city.” The Foundry loves Baltimore and is committed to making the city an even greater place to live, work and play. The church strives to serve without reservation and love the way Jesus loved. Since its formation, The Foundry has been active in service-based initiatives throughout Baltimore. While this sometimes has included meeting neighbors and families through game tables or dog-cooling stations, it has also meant assisting in service with other churches and non-profits addressing needs like job training, addiction, and human trafficking recovery. (For more information, visit foundrybaltimore.com)

Since 1979, the Maryland Food Bank has been on a mission to end hunger in our state. They work to coordinate the procurement and distribution of food donations from manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and government agencies to organizations providing free food to the state’s hungry.
