Stalking Horse in Federal Hill Drops Whiskey Hill Name

Last November, Stalking Horse at 26 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill rebranded its first floor as Whiskey Hill, however the name change caused confusion and a slump in business, according to the restaurant team. Now, all three floors of the restaurant will once again be named Stalking Horse.

Besides changing the name back and adding some new signage, nothing else will change at Stalking Horse. The renovations that took place for Whiskey Hill will stay in place. This includes the reclaimed wood accents and the nine-foot wooden American flag. The large whiskey collection and new menu items are staying as well.

The three floors at Stalking Horse will continue to have different themes at night. Country, 80s, and 90s music will play on the first floor, and DJs will be on the second and third floors.

“I think we confused people by having two names,” said building landlord Marc McFaul. “People were looking for and wanted Stalking Horse. Since changing back, business is already starting to pick up.”

Road Condition on Fort Avenue Causes Car to Lose its Exhaust System

Yesterday around 5:30pm South Baltimore resident Brandon Leibowitz was driving westbound on Fort Ave. when he heard a loud ‘clank’ at the intersection of Jackson St. He was alerted that his exhaust system had fallen off of his car – and was sitting in the street – after the driver of the car behind him honked.

Leibowitz hit a dip in the road around a steel plate, which was in place because of the installation of new gas lines. The installation of these lines has been underway for several months. “I was probably driving under five miles per hour at time,” Leibowitz told SouthBMore.com. Leibowitz drives a coup, which he described as being “a little lower to the ground than your average car, but not too much.”

Leibowitz called 311 and has started the process of filing a claim with Baltimore City. He has also been in touch with Councilman Eric Costello who helped report the incident.

Leibowitz has been quoted about $500 for repairs. He also paid for a tow truck and missed work today, and described the whole situation as “a real inconvenience.”

Last night, the same intersection caused another car’s airbags to discharge.

City contractors have since made some repairs to the road at the intersection.

The intersection also had a water main break in May.

Mad River To Reopen This Fall as The Charles

Mad River Bar & Grille at 1110 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill will reopen this fall as The Charles. It closed this past May for a renovation and rebranding. The original owners of Mad River are River Partners, LLC based in New York City. David Yike and Andrew Wheeler joined on as operating partners last August. Yike relocated to Baltimore from Philadelphia after working with Kimpton Hotels and Wheeler worked at Mad River for more than six years before becoming a partner.

The team released the following statement to SouthBMore.com: “The Charles, Baltimore’s newest dining destination, located in the heart of Federal Hill is set to open Fall 2017.  The 1900’s building has been transformed into a modern industrial space featuring elegant banquette seating with two levels of open space meant to encourage socializing. The upscale, yet approachable menu will be released later this Summer.”

The Charles is in the process of hiring an executive chef. The Charles’ drink menu will include cocktails with a focus on fresh ingredients.

The Charles will be upscale according to Yike and will have a stricter dress code than Mad River. “We want people to treat it as a night out and we are really trying to shake the stigma of Mad River,” he said.
