Pickett Brewing Company Opening This Summer in Pigtown

Pickett Brewing Company will open in the coming weeks at 1130 S. Paca St. in Pigtown. Pickett takes over a 6,500 sq. ft. warehouse that was previously used for industrial storage.

Pickett Brewing is owned by home brewer, United States Coast Guard veteran, and former IT professional Jason Howard alongside Kate Conway, who worked in nonprofit operations. Howard and Conway are neighbors in Baltimore County. Howard will handle brewing at Pickett and Conway will run operations.

Pickett Brewing is named after the street Conway and Howard live on. They both joked that if Howard’s garage door was open, neighbors knew he was in there brewing beer. The logo for Pickett Brewing has Howard’s garage on the left and the glass garage door of the brewery on the right.

Howard is friends with the landlord who convinced Howard to take a look at the Pigtown warehouse. He saw the large garage door on the front and immediately felt the same “open garage door vibe.” The owners also like being in a walkable neighborhood like Pigtown and being close to the stadiums, the growing entertainment district around Horseshoe Casino Baltimore, and Federal Hill.

Howard and Conway also like being in an area with other breweries as Suspended Brewing Company is already open in Pigtown, Wico Street Beer Co. is coming soon to the neighborhood, and Checkerspot Brewing Company is just a few blocks away in Stadium Area. Howard said he loves the vibe of Scott’s Addition in Richmond, Virginia which has more than 15 breweries.

Conway and Howard said they’ve received a lot of support from Pigtown Main Street and Checkerspot, and have already met many of their neighbors.

The taproom at Pickett Brewing has 14 taps which will pour different ales from the brewery’s seven-barrel brewing equipment. Howard said they brew “seasonally-appropriate ales” with more fruit in the summer and darker malts in the winter.

Beers include the Short Jorts, which is a cherry blonde ale; the Pigtown Pale Ale; and several IPAs. Pickett Brewing will also make a root beer and hopes to brew a hard seltzer in the future.

Pickett Brewing will serve a variety of snacks and will partner with food trucks for events.

The taproom is painted white and black with reclaimed wood accents in the tables, bar, and shelving. It has exposed brick walls and exposed rafters and beams on its 14 ft. ceilings. The tables and bar are made of wood from the pews of a former Federal Hill church.

Local artist Patrick Harnett completed several murals on the inside and outside of the building. The interior has a projector that will play Ravens and Orioles games, and a lounge area with a couch. Conway and Howard want guests to feel at home at Pickett Brewing.

The front of Pickett Brewing has a large glass garage door that will be rolled up when weather permits.

Conway and Howard said they will open the doors to neighbors in August and hope to have a formal opening soon after.

Initially, Pickett Brewing will open at 12pm on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. They said it will likely close between 8pm and 10pm on Friday and Saturday and around 6pm on Sunday. They noted, however, the schedule will change during Ravens home games.

Donation Drive this Week for Family Impacted by Locust Point Fire

From Jesus Our Redeemer Church Pastor Brad O’Brien:

The family that was impacted by the fire on Monday at 1500 Latrobe Park Terrace lost everything. They have a 4 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. Difficult times like this allow us to rally in support of our friends/neighbors and remind us all that we live in an amazing community. If you would like to donate items the greatest need at this time is clothing for the kids.

Items of need are:

-girl clothes size 6/7
-girl shoes size 1
-boy clothes size 4/5
-boy shoe size 11
-Toys such as legos, trucks, Barbie’s, crafts etc.

You can drop off donations at Jesus Our Redeemer Church (113 Warren Ave) from 1p-5p today, tomorrow and Friday. Please consider donating new and very gently used (and washed) clothes.

From South Baltimore resident Laurel Shroyer Porter:

The family that was impacted by this fire today at 1500 Latrobe Park Terrace lost everything. They have a 4 year old son and a 7 year old daughter. We are starting a collection to fulfill an immediate need to purchase items like toothbrushes, basic clothes etc. If you are so inclined to assist I’d welcome Venmo donations @laurel-porter-5. Thank you!

Arsenal Bar Abbey Burger Bistro Preps for a Big Weekend

English Premier League clubs Arsenal (Gunners) and Everton will face off tomorrow at M&T Bank Stadium for ‘The Charm City Match’ and it comes with great excitement for Federal Hill bar Abbey Burger Bistro. Abbey Burger Bistro is the home of the Charm City Gooners, the Arsenal fan club that has watched matches at Abbey since 2009.

When asked about the excitement of Arsenal coming to Baltimore, Abbey co-owner Marigot Miller said the news was “huge, huge, huge, huge.” She added it was “unexpected and very exciting.”

Abbey is the official Arsenal bar in Baltimore and listed on the club’s website. No other Maryland bars are listed.

Miller said Abbey typically gets 20-50 Arsenal fans for games, some of which start at 7am, and big games draw an even bigger crowd. Abbey has Arsenal flags flying outside, Arsenal jerseys and scarves on the walls, and serves Fullers, which is the stadium beer at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Abbey also serves a shot called The Romford Pele which is a shot of Jagermeister in a beer. Abbey serves it with Natty Boh. Romford Pele is the nickname for former Gunner Ray Parlour.

Abbey is throwing a block party tomorrow on its small portion of Marshall St. and on E. Cross St. from One Star Country Club to Light St. Miller said the party will be a tribute to Baltimore with Natty Bohs, crushes, crab cake sliders, crab tots, Pollock Johnny sausages, and more. 98 Rock and WBAL Radio will be MCing the event. There will also be fundraisers for Gooners V. Cancer and the Craig Willinger Fund.

Miller said she has seen a surge in Arsenal-loving tourists this week for The Charm City Match. “We’ve seen a lot of English IDs, plus others from Boston, Philly, and D.C.” Last night Arsenal America hosted a trivia night and podcast at Abbey.

Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last year with the youngest team in the league leading to high expectations for the 2022/2023 season from fans and pundits. Miller said Abbey is hoping for a strong season from the Gunners.
