Bartending Academy “Gorgitenders” Opening in Federal Hill

Bartending academy Gorgitenders is opening at 912 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. Gorgitenders is taking over an approximately 1,000 sq. ft. space that was recently the home of vintage shop SIX2SIX Society.

Gorgitenders is owned by Chimiya Polk who is a bartender at MGM. Polk has a bartending staffing agency called Gorgitenders which staffs bartenders for many eventsand has been teaching bartending courses. Polk was looking for a storefront for her bartending academy and after almost closing a deal on a space in Fells Point, she signed a deal for the storefront on Charles St.

Gorgitenders will offer a one-week daytime course from 11am to 6pm and a two-week nighttime course from 630pm to 1030pm. Students will learn to make over 500 cocktails, how to interact with customers, and will get TIPS certification which teaches students not to overserve and recognize alcohol-related problems.

A 20% tuition discount will be offered to Federal Hill residents.

Gorgitenders will also offer a flair course, which teaches bartenders to do tricks with the bottles, shakers, and tools while serving tricks. Polk said the next closes flair training school is in New York City. The flair course will be taught by an instructor that opened a flair training school in Las Vegas.

Polk hopes Gorgitenders will lead to safer bartending practices in the area and would love to see more bartenders doing flair tricks behind the bar.

Polk has been working on the space since January and set up a reception area in the front of the building and the rest of the space is setup like a bar. Gorgitenders will be available for rent for private parties, but if alcohol is served the client will need to purchase a one-day liquor license.

Gorgitenders hopes to open in July or August. Polk’s industry has been put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, but she’s excited to get her school open soon and she’s looking forward to things getting back to normal in the bartending and event industry.

The Maryland Science Center to Reopen Next Week at 25% Capacity, IMAX Remains Closed

Maryland Science Center press release:

The Science Center has implemented steps to enhance the safety of visitors and guests:

Maryland Science Center staff will also be taking additional steps:

Additionally, some exhibit areas may be closed occasionally during the day for 30 minutes for deep cleaning.

“We started planning for our reopening the moment we closed in Mid-March,” said Mark J. Potter, President and CEO of the Maryland Science Center. “While the staff enjoyed connecting with audiences through our online programming, we’re excited to welcome guests back to the Inner Harbor. As a private non-profit, we are so thankful for the support of our donors and members who sustained us during this most difficult time. We look forward to continuing in our mission to inspire, empower, and engage…Let’s science!”

AVAM Cancels Flicks From the Hill in 2020, Pet Parade Goes Virtual, Museum Remains Closed

American Visionary Art Museum press release:

Two of the American Visionary Art Museum’s much-anticipated annual summer events have changes for 2020: July 4th Visionary Pets on Parade goes virtual for this year, and The Hughes Family Flicks from the Hill movie series has been canceled. The decision was made out of continuing concerns for the health and optimal wellbeing of our community and staff. The move complements Baltimore City’s cancellation of its outdoor festivals this summer and supports the permit office as a partner in issuing the required permits for outdoor gatherings. Both the popular July 4th animal-loving celebration and the under-the-stars free movie series aim to resume next summer, in 2021.

July 4th Pet Parade Goes Virtual
Undeterred by the challenge of bringing together pets and pet lovers during a global pandemic, the museum is soliciting photos and videos of animal companions in their patriotic best, or other costume finery, for a virtual Pet Parade. Owners should submit their materials by July 1 to marketing@avam.org. The gathered images and clips will publish on the museum’s YouTube and social media channels. The July 4th Visionary Pets on Parade is held each year in loving memory of supreme animal friend, Ellis Rosen.

AVAM’s popular movie series, Flicks from the Hill, was recently voted “Best Outdoor Movie Series” by Baltimore Sun’s Best of Baltimore Readers’ Choice Awards, having garnered a loyal following since launching in 2005 with “Wizard of Oz.” The film series is accompanied by pre-movie free museum admission, art workshops, and fitness activities—from yoga to group bike rides—and food truck offerings.

Museum founder and director Rebecca Hoffberger laments, “We are truly sorry to disappoint Flicks fans and Pet Parade devotees. The gathered crowds themselves always looked so much to me like art—many dressed in costumes, gathered as one community, all to watch movies or share their love of four-legged best friends. In honor of the steadfast companionship and support animals provide, particularly during life’s hardest moments, we will hold a virtual Pet Parade this year. Let your imagination and fun go wild! We can’t wait to see your pics!”

Additionally, AVAM Remains Temporarily Closed
While Baltimore City has entered Phase 2 of its reopening plan which allows museums to open, AVAM remains temporarily closed as it works to implement enhanced best health precautions for all its visitors and staff. The museum looks forward to welcoming the public when it reopens in the near future.

Rally Held to Save Baltimore City Fire Department Engine 55 in Pigtown

A large crowd gathered on Wednesday morning in an effort to save Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD) Engine 55 which is housed at 1229 Bush St. in Pigtown/Carroll-Camden Industrial Area. Engine 55 has been cut from Mayor Bernard C. “Jack” Young’s budget in 2021.

Engine 55 is housed with Truck 23 and Ambulance 22. According to the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 734’s press release, “Engine 55 currently responds to over 1800 emergency runs annually. Nearly 400 of which are Box Alarms (which are calls for reported fires) and hundreds of emergency medical runs in just 2019 alone.”

Local 734 added, “An “Engine” in Baltimore City is responsible for extinguishing fire on dwelling fires. This is an intricate part to life safety as firefighters on Truck companies rely on the Engine company to allow them to search for victims who may be trapped inside the fire. Engine 55 and it’s members alone have received several awards for saving and removing lives of victims inside of dwelling fires over the years and that is all about to change.”

Today’s rally was put on by Local 734 and its President Dickie Altieri. It was attended in support by District 10 Councilman Ed Reisinger, who represents Pigtown and Carroll-Camden; Phylicia Porter, who won the Democratic primary for the District 10 Council seat with Ed Reisinger retiring; District 9 Councilman John Bullock, who represents neighborhoods just northwest of Engine 55; and District 11 Councilman Eric Costello, who represents neighborhoods just east of Engine 55.

Also there in support of Local 734 was City Council President Brandon Scott, who just won the Democratic primary for Mayor, and District 8 Councilman Kristerfer Burnett.

The rally was also attended by many fire fighters, members of the Pigtown community, and Kim Lane, executive director of Pigtown Main Street.

Altieri, the elected officials, and Porter all spoke and implored Mayor Young and BCFD Chief Niles Ford to restore the funding to Engine 55 and talked about its importance to safety in Baltimore City. Council President Scott said, “When you are in the midst of a global pandemic, cuts to people on the frontlines who are dealing with those issues are just unacceptable. We stand four minutes drive time – and one and a half with lights and sirens – away from a community that had a tremendous amount of fires over the winter,” referring to a number of arsons that occurred in Carrollton Ridge.

Just yesterday, Engine 55 responded to a fire in Locust Point.

SouthBMore.com has reached out to BCFD for comment, but has not heard back at this time.

Local 734 also said in its press release, “With Engine 55 gone, that means in the event of a fire, Truck 23 will be operating without an Engine company immediately on scene. This can delay and hinder rescue to any victims who may be inside while additionally put the lives of the members on Truck 23 at risk as they enter a dwelling fire without an engine company available.”

The press release also provided the following information about nearby engines:

The engines that would have to come into the area to render aide, of course ONLY if they are not already on an emergency run in their area are:

Engine 47 (Morrell Park) is separated by two sets of railroad tracks and 1.3 miles away

Engine 58 (Cherry Hill) is currently in Northeast Baltimore after spending several months in Brooklyn but upon their return will be 1.9 miles away

Engine 2 (Federal Hill) Located on Light Street is 1.7 miles away

Engine 23 (Downtown) at one of the busiest firehouses in the nation is 1.4 miles away

Engine 14 (Booth-Boyd) the second busiest engine company in the city averaging over 5000 calls annually, is located on Hollins Street at 1.4 miles away.

There are no Truck companies located at any of these firehouses and truck companies have to come from even greater distances to assist with fire suppression calls.

Order & Chaos to Serve THB Bagels as Part of Marketing Partnership with Planit

Planit, a Federal Hill-based communications, marketing, and digital agency, has added THB Bagelry + Deli to its roster of clients. Planit owns Order & Chaos Coffee, which is attached to its Key Hwy Headquarters, and the cafe is now selling THB’s bagels as part of the marketing partnership.

THB has engaged Planit “to lead its earned media and influencer marketing efforts, as it seeks to build brand awareness with local and national audiences,” according to a press release.

Order & Chaos Coffee will sell single-serve THB bagels topped with cream cheeses or as a sandwich. Customers can place large orders of bagels with 48-hour notice.

“This is an important year for THB Bagelry + Deli and this was the perfect time to unite with Planit,” said Tony Scotto, CEO and owner of THB, in a press release. “In addition to new store openings throughout the state, we are looking to announce even more significant news this summer. We are thrilled to be working with Planit on these announcements and cannot wait to show our customers what’s in store.”

“This is a true collision of great, appetizing, local brands,” said Matt Doud, co-founder of Planit and Order & Chaos, in a press release. “Much like our brands, THB Bagelry + Deli prides itself on its positive energy and sharing its passion with the customers it serves on a daily basis. We are thrilled to be working with THB to increase the awareness of their brand and excited that this collaboration allows Order & Chaos the opportunity to serve their delicious bagels.”

THB first opened as “Towson Hot Bagels” in Towson in 1999. It has since expanded to other Baltimore-area locations in Canton, Timonium, and Charles Village. The company will open two new locations in Columbia and Owings Mills later this year.

THB bagels are also sold at Urban Deli and Blooming Deli in Federal Hill.

Cross Street Market to Reopen on Thursday

Baltimore restaurants, malls, and casinos were allowed to open at 50 percent capacity as of last Friday as Baltimore City entered Stage Two of the State of Maryland’s “Roadmap to Recovery.’ Federal Hill’s Cross Street Market, which has been open for curbside and carryout window service during the COVID-19 pandemic, will allow customers back inside starting this Thursday at 11am.

On Facebook, Cross Street Market announced:

To ensure the safety of our guests and vendors, we’re asking everyone to practice social distancing, wear masks when not eating and observe posted signage.

Our team is taking every precaution necessary, including providing hand and table sanitizer for your use.

Thank you for your continued patience, and for supporting the Heart of Federal Hill!

Cross Street Market’s initial hours will be Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 8pm and Friday to Sunday from 11am to 9pm.

Cross Street Market also has outdoor seating along the southside of the block-long market.

Bullhead Pit Beef, which will be the 18th business to open in Cross Street Market, is currently under construction. Altas Restaurant Group’s Atlas Fish Market and Watershed have been announced and designs have been approved, but construction has not yet started.

The market joins a number of South Baltimore restaurants and bars that have reopened as COVID-19 restrictions have been loosened in the city. Restaurants have been allowed to open for carryout food and drinks for much of the pandemic and were allowed to open for outdoor seating starting on May 29th.

Baltimore City Recreation & Parks to Make Announcement on Pools This Week

Baltimore City has entered Stage Two of the State of Maryland’s ‘Roadmap to Recovery’ from the COVID-19 pandemic. Stage Two allows pools to open at 50 percent capacity. While some private pools in the city have already opened, the public pools in the city have not yet opened.

Baltimore City Recreation & Parks (BCRP) Public Relations Officer Whitney Brown told SouthBMore.com the City will make an announcement this week regarding its plan for public pools.

Last year, Riverside Park Pool was open from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend with extended hours and programming starting on June 22nd. There is also a City-run splash pad at Solo Gibbs Park in Sharp-Leadenhall.

Riverside Park pool had completed new improvements last year thanks to a $49,500 grant from the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP) and a volunteer effort from Riverside Neighborhood Association and residents in the South Baltimore community. The improvements included new murals, games, trash cans, and furniture.

The Latin Spot Grill Coming Soon to Federal Hill

The Latin Spot Grill will be opening at the former home at Zuzu’s at 1136 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The restaurant is a concept from Arnoldo Ulloa who has owned a catering business called Don Julio’s Kitchen for 12 years. He also owns food trucks and has a restaurant construction company called CA Restaurant Services.

Ulloa, who lives in Arlington, VA, has been in Federal Hill in recent months working on the build-out of bakery Dulceology at 1138 S. Charles St. During this time, he fell in love with Federal Hill and decided to open his own restaurant next-door after the landlord met him and showed him the property.

“I had no clue about Federal Hill [before taking on the contracting job at Dulceology],” said Ulloa. “It’s booming, I really like it. There are all kinds of things opening and I saw so much potential.”

He said he plans on moving to the area in the future.

The menu at The Latin Spot Grill will be modeled after his catering menu. It will be a mix of American items, as well as Latin American dishes from many different countries. The menu will include cheesesteaks, chicken salad sandwiches, chicken tender subs, cheeseburger subs, as well as quesadillas and tacos with steak, chicken, and vegetables. Two “heavy plates” will be carne asada or grilled chicken served with yellow rice, black beans, and pico de gallo. Ulloa will have daily specials featuring items like pupusas and different Latin American favorites and fusions.

The Latin Spot Grill will just be carry out at this time, but Ulloa said he could be interested in expanding if business goes well. Ulloa will partner with Uber Eats, GrubHub, and DoorDash delivery services.

Ulloa said he plans to keep similar hours to &pizza across the street. He said the hours will likely be Tuesday to Thursday from 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 3am, and Sundays from 11am to 7pm or 11pm.

Ulloa is busy working on a couple additional restaurant build-outs right now, but says he hopes to open The Latin Spot Grill in July.

“I’m excited about opening,” said Ulloa. “I hope everything goes well and I hope the community enjoys the different types of fusion.”

The Charmery to Open this Friday in Federal Hill

Popular Baltimore ice cream shop The Charmery is opening its new location at 46 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill this Friday. The Charmery has been renovating the small first-floor retail space, which was formerly a salon, in recent years.

The Charmery opened its first shop in Hampden in 2013, a Towson location in 2018, and a shop and production facility at Union Collective in Medfield in 2018. The company now has 90 employees.

The Charmery’s Federal Hill location will have a walk-up window. It will have no interior seating or access for customers.

The addition of The Charmery’s production facility made a shop with a small footprint such as 46 E. Cross St. possible, according to co-owner David Alima, who started The Charmery with his wife Laura Alima. Now this location can focus on serving ice cream and not creating it on site.

“We actually looked at that space like two years ago and didn’t have the infrastructure set up to do another location at the time,” David Alima told SouthBMore.com last year. “We love the tiny footprint and love the neighborhood. It’s such a classic Baltimore neighborhood and we always dreamed of having a location there.”

The Charmery in Federal Hill will serve 12 homemade flavors of ice cream along with milkshakes and sundaes. It will be open every day from 3pm to 10pm, however those hours could change. David Alima said with the nightlife around Cross St., The Charmery may look into keeping the shop open until midnight in the future. The Charmery will be open year-round in Federal Hill.

The Charmery will have rotating flavors and David Alima said they are looking to do collaborations with local businesses on new creations. He said they have already talked with Blue Moon Too owner Sara Simmington about teaming up on a flavor.

The Charmery in Federal Hill will have two to three employees.

The storefront facade of The Charmery in Federal Hill was painted by local muralist Marshall Adams. David Alima called it a “classic design.” The storefront is blue and black with gold accents. It has a “happiness served here” sign next to the walk-up window.

All of The Charmery’s retail locations were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic until last Thursday, but the company was selling pints for curbside pickup and delivery. David Alima called the closure “a safety precaution,” but said “now feels like the right time [to open].” He added that they have increased their already “pretty rigorous” cleaning standards.

“It’s so nice to see our staff again,” said David Alima. “We have a lot of people excited about working, and for people not ready yet that’s fine too.”

Baltimore and Maryland restaurants reopened for outdoor seating on June 5th.

Tinybrickoven Owner Will Fagg Invents Portable Hand Washing Sinks for the Public

When COVID-19 hit the United States, Tinybrickoven owner Will Fagg immediately began to think of ways he could use his skill set to help out. In addition to being a pizza maker and business owner, Fagg has worked in infection control as a petty officer with the United States Navy at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station hospital in Puerto Rico and was an operating room nurse at Johns Hopkins. He also grew up as a “maker” building and taking things apart with his father’s tools. Using his ability to build things and his knowledge of the dangers of germs, Fagg decided to design and make portable hand washing sinks that could be deployed into public spaces.

Fagg’s hand washing sinks are made of two Home Depot buckets, a large bowl from Dollar Tree, a marine pump, PVC piping, wood, bungee cords, plumbing straps, hardware, and zip ties. Fagg said he built a similar sink 10 years ago for events where he sold pizza, but wanted to get a quick and efficient version designed as things were critical during the pandemic.

“More hand washing is good for everyone,” said Fagg.

In his two-bucket design, the bottom bucket holds clean water and the top bucket is for the dirty water. Fagg estimated people could wash their hands more than 100 times using one bucket of clean water. For areas with homeless populations, Fagg purchased a box of soap bars to be handed out. He also has a more advanced model of the sink next to the counter at Tinybrickoven with a container of hand soap and paper towels.

Fagg said the sinks cost about $30 to make and can be constructed in about 10 minutes. He has invested about $500 into the project and has the supplies to produce 10 more sinks. One is currently set up at the Home Depot in Dundalk, three were dropped off at the food pantry at the former Parts & Labor restaurant in Remington, and another was taken by a local advocate to bring to Martin Luther King Blvd. He is looking for more places to deploy the sinks and looking to partner with more members of the community who can help distribute them to areas in need.

Fagg has also made videos showing how to make the sinks hoping more people around the country will make them. He is also considering a potential GoFundMe campaign to raise money to build more sinks.

Business at Tinybrickoven in Federal Hill has dropped off significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Fagg, and like all restaurants in Maryland, his dining room is currently closed. Fagg said he wanted to stay open to keep busy and gain new customers, and he believe this will help the business in the long run.

He’s also used the down time to make his own gelato recipes for Tinybrickoven, to sell pizzas kits for customers for a period of time, and to host a soup kitchen for the homeless at the restaurant over Easter.
