Mad River Bar & Grille at 1110 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill announced it will be closing after this coming Saturday after 13 years in the neighborhood. Mad River posted the news on its Facebook page earlier today:
It’s bittersweet to announce that after 13 years we will be closing our doors. Come celebrate with us all week long and especially Saturday evening as a final send off.
The original owners of Mad River are River Partners, LLC based in New York City. David Yike and Andrew Wheeler joined on as operating partners last August. Wheeler worked at Mad River for more than six years before becoming a partner and Yike relocated from Philadelphia after working with Kimpton Hotels.
After closing, the team will undertake a renovation of the building, which was once a bank, and will reopen the space as a new restaurant with a new name in the fall. “We started working on ideas about a year ago,” said Wheeler. “It’s been a great 13 years, but it’s time to move forward and focus on something new so we can make it another 13 years.”
Wheeler noted that the decision was not based on a lack of business, but rather a chance to bring a new vision to the space. The entire building, including the kitchen, will be renovated. Wheeler said the space needs some TLC after 13 years, “We want to show off this building, emphasize its character, and bring it a bit more back to life.”
The building features 20 ft. ceilings, original trim work, and the original vault.
The team will be revealing more about the new concept in the upcoming months. Wheeler said the new venue will continue to be the official bar of the Baltimore chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association.
To close out the Mad River era in Federal Hill, many of the original bartenders who helped build Mad River will be back behind the bar on Saturday night. Mad River is also hosting a Preakness bus trip on Saturday.
