Popular Baltimore ice cream shop The Charmery is opening its new location at 46 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill this Friday. The Charmery has been renovating the small first-floor retail space, which was formerly a salon, in recent years.
The Charmery opened its first shop in Hampden in 2013, a Towson location in 2018, and a shop and production facility at Union Collective in Medfield in 2018. The company now has 90 employees.
The Charmery’s Federal Hill location will have a walk-up window. It will have no interior seating or access for customers.
The addition of The Charmery’s production facility made a shop with a small footprint such as 46 E. Cross St. possible, according to co-owner David Alima, who started The Charmery with his wife Laura Alima. Now this location can focus on serving ice cream and not creating it on site.
“We actually looked at that space like two years ago and didn’t have the infrastructure set up to do another location at the time,” David Alima told SouthBMore.com last year. “We love the tiny footprint and love the neighborhood. It’s such a classic Baltimore neighborhood and we always dreamed of having a location there.”
The Charmery in Federal Hill will serve 12 homemade flavors of ice cream along with milkshakes and sundaes. It will be open every day from 3pm to 10pm, however those hours could change. David Alima said with the nightlife around Cross St., The Charmery may look into keeping the shop open until midnight in the future. The Charmery will be open year-round in Federal Hill.
The Charmery will have rotating flavors and David Alima said they are looking to do collaborations with local businesses on new creations. He said they have already talked with Blue Moon Too owner Sara Simmington about teaming up on a flavor.
The Charmery in Federal Hill will have two to three employees.
The storefront facade of The Charmery in Federal Hill was painted by local muralist Marshall Adams. David Alima called it a “classic design.” The storefront is blue and black with gold accents. It has a “happiness served here” sign next to the walk-up window.
All of The Charmery’s retail locations were closed during the COVID-19 pandemic until last Thursday, but the company was selling pints for curbside pickup and delivery. David Alima called the closure “a safety precaution,” but said “now feels like the right time [to open].” He added that they have increased their already “pretty rigorous” cleaning standards.
“It’s so nice to see our staff again,” said David Alima. “We have a lot of people excited about working, and for people not ready yet that’s fine too.”
Baltimore and Maryland restaurants reopened for outdoor seating on June 5th.
