The Charmery to Open an Ice Cream Shop on Cross Street in Federal Hill

Popular Baltimore ice cream shop The Charmery is opening a new location at 46 E. Cross Street in Federal Hill. The small first-floor retail space was most recently a salon.

The Charmery opened its first shop in Hampden in 2013, a Towson location in 2018, and a shop and production facility at Union Collective in Medfield in 2018. The company now has 90 employees.

The addition of The Charmery’s production facility made a shop with a small footprint such as 46 E. Cross Street possible, according to co-owner David Alima, who started The Charmery with wife Laura Alima. Now this location can focus on serving ice cream and not creating it on site.

“We actually looked at that space like two years ago and didn’t have the infrastructure set up to do another location at the time,” said David Alima. “We love the tiny footprint and love the neighborhood. It’s such a classic Baltimore neighborhood and we always dreamed of having a location there.”

David Alima is excited about being a part of the Federal Hill dining scene, which he says has a lot of him and his wife’s favorite restaurants. He is also looking forward to being accessible to all the young families in South Baltimore. “It’s a really special little neighborhood and it checks off a lot of the boxes for people who love ice cream,” he said.

The Charmery in Federal Hill will have about 12 flavors each day, including a vegan option, and will offer sugar cones, its own waffle cones, milkshakes, sundaes, and pints to go. The Charmery gets its cream from Tricking Springs Creamery in Southern Pennsylvania and uses local produce as much as possible. It has partnered with Otterbein cookies, local musicians, and candy products on its flavors. “We love Baltimore and we are proud to be representing it,” said David Alima.

The Charmery rotates its ice cream flavors. The current options in Hampden include Old Bay Caramel, Maryland Mud, Otterbein Sugar Cookie, Chocolate Peppermint, Lemon Stick, Summer Strawberry, Pure Vanilla, and Tell Tale Chocolate.

Birthday pies and party catering is also available through The Charmery.

David Alima said the retail location in Federal Hill needs a “medium” amount of renovation. It will have an ordering window and may have a small space for customers to come inside. It will have a lot of freezer space for the ice cream.

The Charmery hopes to open in Federal Hill in the next few months. It will open every day at noon and will likely stay open until midnight.
