Baltimore-staple Royal Farm has opened its 590 sq. ft. chicken stall at the newly-renovated Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. This new concept from Royal Farms will just focus on the convenience store and gas station’s “world famous chicken,” which will include fried chicken, chicken tenders, chicken on a stick, chicken salad, chicken sandwiches, and sides.
Cross Street Market is being developed and leased by CSM Ventures, LLC, a partnership between developer CVP and CANAdev, with construction and property management by MacKenzie.
CVP Partner Arsh Mirmiran told SouthBMore.com in May that the idea for a Royal Farms at Cross Street Market was discussed a couple of years ago, but he nixed it because he thought people would overreact because Royal Farms, while Baltimore-based, is “perceived as a chain.” But, after luring and announcing other local businesses for Cross Street Market, some of which are opening their first brick-and-mortar location, he revisited the idea when the team was looking to get a fried chicken stall.
“Once you get all the local concepts, to have the area’s best chicken would be a huge plus,” said Mirmiran. “If you are looking at a list of five to ten foods to eat while in Baltimore, Royal Farms is probably one of them. If you are in town, you are probably not going to go to a convenience store or random gas station, you’ll go to a market.”
Royal Farms was also excited about this opportunity. “Being that we are a Baltimore-born company, it is an honor to be able to offer our World Famous chicken at the iconic Cross Street Market,” said Royal Farms CEO John Kemp in a statement. “We’re proud to bring a bit of tradition to the evolving landscape of Baltimore.”
Royal Farms is going for more of a vintage look and is using its cartoon chicken logo for neon signage that was created by Locust Point’s Mindgrub. “People very easily could come to the conclusion five to ten years from now that Royal Farms Chicken was probably started in the market and grew out from there,” said Mirmiran. “Time will tell how it works, but my level of confidence is just as high with the Royal Farms store as anything else we are putting in there.”
The stall will sell Royal Farms chicken meals that come with Western fries and a roll; large platters of chicken; chicken on a stick; chicken salad, pulled white, pulled dark, and chicken tender sandwiches and sliders; half-pound to three-pound containers of chicken salad; sides including Western fries, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and rolls; chocolate chip cookies and cookie dough; and beverage including Royal Farms Water, Royal Farms Tea, and cans of Coke and Sprite. Dipping sauces are honey mustard, BBQ, buffalo, and chesapeake.
Royal Farms’ stall will not sell the deli sandwiches, coffee, or convenience store items found in its stores. The stall will also not have the same promotions and RoFo Rewards.
The Royal Farms stall will have a window for curbside walk-up service that is adjacent to an outdoor seating area. Royal Farms will not have its own seating, but will be adjacent to a common seating area inside of Cross Street Market.
Royal Farms will be open Monday to Thursday from 10am to 10pm with the carryout window open Thursday from 10pm to 2am. It will be open Friday and Saturday from 10am to 12am with the carryout window open from 12am to 2am, and Sundays from 10am to 9pm. Royal Farms carryout out window is not open yet and the stall’s temporary hours are now Monday to Thursday from 10am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 10pm, and Sunday from 10am to 6pm.
The Royal Farms stall at Cross Street Market has 17 employees.
Royal Farms Marketing Director Shelby Kemp told SouthBMore.com they are excited to try this new slimmed down concept and she believes it will be successful. She said this concept could be replicated in places with tighter footprints like malls and airports.
