GoFundMe Launched for Officer Kevin “ButterBean” Vaught

Officer Kevin “ButterBean” Vaught was a popular fixture around South Baltimore during his 18 years working in the Baltimore Police Department (BPD) Southern District. Officer ButterBean was a constant presence around the neighborhood as well as at community meetings where he provided crime updates and promoted clothing drives, food drives, and fundraisers. He retired in 2015 after 34 years with BPD.

Officer ButterBean also ran the Southern District Police Explorers, working with teens in the area, and has long been active in the Boy Scouts.

In March, Officer ButterBean was diagnosed with stage four liver cancer. As a result, he will undergo chemotherapy at Johns Hopkins Hospital twice a week and will be unable to continue working at his job as a night auditor at the Hampton Inn in Frederick. The drive to Johns Hopkins is about 100 miles from Officer ButterBean’s home.

Officer ButterBean told SouthBMore.com that this schedule will put a strain on things but, as always, he’s keeping a smile on his face. “I’m looking forward to ridding my body of this poison! I’m being very positive,” he told SouthBMore.com.

His niece Kate Burkhard has started a GoFundMe titled “Team ButterBean: #ByeCancer” to raise money for his family. Click here to donate.

She writes in the GoFundMe, “While we have been supporting the family as they are processing the shift in priorities and searching for the top medical teams and thinking of the impact that basic logistics will have on their family, he has been a rock, our rock. Focused on staying positive and continuing to support and love us all so well. Business as usual for this calm, steady man even though there is a Signal 13 going out, about him, right now.”

Burkhard later adds, “There will be big and small financial needs …. from travel costs to and from the hospital and treatment centers, small things that will add up fast, like meals out and parking fees to larger burdens, like large co-pays and missed time at work (while he is retired from the BPD, he is working in a new field as well as his wife and 2 sons that will need to take time off to be with him).”
