Brunch Restaurant ‘Home Maid’ Coming to Key Highway in Federal Hill

Home Maid, a popular Towson restaurant focusing on breakfast and brunch plates, is relocating to 1400 Key Hwy. in Federal Hill. Home Maid is owned and operated by brothers and Baltimore natives Derrick and Justin Faulcon.

While previously living in Los Angeles, the brothers were inspired by the city’s brunch scene and decided they wanted to start their own restaurant featuring a take on some of the southern-style recipes they grew up eating with their family. They came back to Baltimore and opened Home Maid in 2014 at 7 E. Chesapeake St. in Towson at a former taco restaurant. They discovered the location when they saw a ‘for rent’ sign on the Chesapeake St. property while intending to check out a different listing with their realtor.

The purchase of the Towson business also came with a food truck, which in 2015 they were hoping to take back to Los Angeles. They ultimately decided to stay in the Baltimore area, however, and turned their focus on expanding their brick-and-mortar restaurant operation and launching their food truck locally.

The brothers were looking to expand upon the small 650 sq. ft. building they had in Towson and began scouting various properties in several areas of Baltimore. After looking at another available property in the neighborhood, they once again happened to accidentally discover a ‘for rent’ sign on a property that would later become their home. This time it was at 1400 Key Hwy., which was formerly occupied by Grill on the Hill, The Sushi Place, and Feisty Goat Pub.

They closed the Towson location in November and signed a lease for the 1,600 sq. ft. space on Key Hwy. The new, larger location brings their dining capacity from 14 seats to 50 seats with additional outdoor seating.

Derrick, who told SouthBMore.com he has a passion for interior design, renovated the space to have the “romanticism of home.” Home Maid has a country kitchen feel and features a concrete bar top that will seat 10, subway tile back splashes, refinished wood tables and benches, and a collection of antique and eclectic items that the brothers found at flea markets around the area. The walls are covered with a navy blue wainscoting as well as a rooster-themed wallpaper and a wallpaper styled to look like vintage newspapers. Home Maid additionally features a variety of light fixtures and country-style window shutters.

Along with the bar, the dining area features a large family-style table made from reclaimed wood, two- and four-top tables, and bench seating. They will soon be installing a new awning on the exterior and replacing the windows.

The menu will feature a rotation of 15 breakfast-style items inspired by the cooking of their grandmother and family who are originally from North Carolina. Staples will include The Black Bastard, featuring blackened salmon and creamy grits; The Fat Albert, featuring their signature biscuits with an andouille sausage gravy; chicken and waffles; biscuit sandwiches; a crab cake benedict; yogurt parfait; and more. All dishes and sides, including three types of jams. Sides will include brown sugar fried sweet potatoes and rosemary parmesan potatoes. Derrick Faulcon noted many items could be quickly prepared for those on the go in the morning.

Signature drinks will include a brown sugar lemonade and a cucumber watermelon lemonade. Unlike their restaurant in Towson, the Faulcon’s new space in Federal Hill has a liquor license, which they plan on utilizing by offering bloody marys, hard lemonades, fresh-squeezed mimosas and drinks, sangria, Irish Coffee, and local beers on tap. They will also be serving a pour-over style Counter Culture coffee.

Home Maid’s Towson restaurant had a four-and-a-half star Yelp rating and a five-star Facebook rating.

The Faulcons plan on opening in the May timeframe and will hire 14-20 employees. Home Maid will be open every day from 8am to 10pm.

The Faulcons will also soon be launching the Home Maid food truck in Baltimore.
