Thistle Butter Collective Opens Eclectic Vintage Boutique in Federal Hill

Shanté Sophia Jackson opened Thistle Butter Collective last month at 1005 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The approximately 500 sq. ft. storefront was formerly the home of That’s The Point Needlecrafts which closed in March.

Thistle Butter Collective is a vintage store with the tagline “Reclaimed & Remixed Decor & Apparel.” Jackson said about 60 percent of the store is “retro vintage” with items from the 1940s through 1960s, and the other part focuses on new fashion trends. Thistle Butter Collective sells clothes, jewelry, home goods, and furniture. Items includes bowties and neckties, jeans, blouses, 70s jumpsuits, dresses, sofas, and more.

Thistle Butter Collective also offers tailoring and works with a master seamstress.

Jackson said estate sales are her “best friend when finding items.” She is also always looking for items to purchase, especially furniture, from people in the area for her store.

“If you are in Baltimore, DC, Maryland, or Virginia and have DIY furniture items, I’d love to see them,” she said.

The Thistle Butter Collective name comes from the thistle flower that Jackson and her wife wore during their wedding. Jackson said it is the most adaptable flower and representative of their story. She told SouthBMore.com that when she and her then-fiancé were looking for men’s clothes in department stores they were not happy with the way they were treated. She wanted to open a store where she said “all are welcome.” Butter Collective represents “all of us blending together,” said Jackson.

Thistle Butter Collective grew out of Jackson’s growing business as a personal shopper. She decided to open a shop when she was running in a race through Federal Hill for breast cancer last October and saw the way sunlight was beaming through the glass of the storefront. “It was meant to be,” she said. “And when I met the owner of the building, it felt like we had been family for years.”

Jackson said she loves the mix of younger and older residents in Federal Hill and that the neighborhood has been very friendly.

Jackson also owns two storage units and stores many items at her Baltimore home.

Thistle Butter Collective is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12pm to 6pm. Jackson said though that if the curtains on the front windows are closed, she’s out shopping. Thistle Butter Collective also sells a lot of items on its website and on Etsy, and will be posting all of its items on Instagram.

Thistle Butter Collective joins several other new Federal Hill boutiques including Echoes Vintage and Irregular Exposure Showroom & Fashion Academy.
