Mayor Brandon M. Scott announces the return of festivities and fireworks to the Inner Harbor on Monday, July 4, 2022, from 4:00–10:00 p.m. “I am genuinely excited to announce that our 4th of July celebration, including fireworks, will be back and bigger than ever for Summer 2022,” says Mayor Scott. This multifaceted event is produced by a tremendous partnership of prominent Baltimore organizations coming together under Mayor Scott’s leadership to give Baltimore something beautiful to celebrate.
The Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA), Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO), and Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore (WPB) are collaborating on the evening’s programming to create a truly special event for the Baltimore community, the people of Maryland, and visiting guests. Also participating in the day’s festivities is a host of renowned Baltimore institutions including the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore (DPOB), Baltimore Orioles, American Visionary Arts Museum (AVAM), National Aquarium in Baltimore, and media partner WJZ.
“When Baltimore’s world-class arts and cultural institutions collaborate on events like this, we amplify each other’s work and strengthen what is great about Baltimore — our sense of community and our Charm City pride. This spectacular free Independence Day celebration with music, history and performing arts is worthy of Baltimore and we are thrilled to invite residents and visitors to what we hope will be the first of many collaborative celebrations,” says BOPA CEO Donna Drew Sawyer.
Looking forward to the festivities, Laurie Schwartz, President of Waterfront Partnership of Baltimore, adds, “We are delighted to see the Promenade activated from Fells Point to Rash Field as we celebrate this monumental occasion and welcome the BSO to Rash Field Park. We will see a return to the tradition of fireworks over the harbor and a spectacular day-long experience for Baltimoreans downtown. The Waterfront Partnership will also curate street performers between activities adding even more magic and awe as downtown organizations and talent join forces to shed light on what makes Baltimore so very special.”
The event will kick off at 4:00 p.m. with a traditional performance by the United States Navy’s oldest band, the Navy Band Commodores, at the Inner Harbor Amphitheater. The performance will last about 2.5 hours with a brief intermission. Between concerts, there will be street performers and activities from various attractions along the entire promenade. Additionally, WPB and DPOB are teaming up to coordinate local food trucks at West Shore Park by the Vistors Center.
Mayor Scott is excited to announce that BSO Artistic Partner and Baltimorean Wordsmith will deliver a spoken word performance of Frederick Douglass’ “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” from the BGE Pavilion mainstage in Rash Field Park at 7:30 p.m. Then at 8:00 p.m., the BSO will host a Star- Spangled Celebration concert under the baton of Assistant Conductor Jonathan Rush at the BGE Pavilion in the newly renovated Rash Field Park. “The BSO is proud to be part of a grand return to community celebrations this Fourth of July,” says BSO President and CEO Mark Hanson. “This holiday is a time to celebrate all the creativity that Baltimore has to offer, and we’re looking forward to joining with a free, patriotic performance, bringing the entire BSO downtown to our city’s newly renovated Rash Field.”
The full orchestra performance, sponsored by PNC Bank, will culminate around 9:30 p.m. with a dazzling 13-minute fireworks display produced by fireworks company Pyrotecnico. The best views are along the Inner Harbor promenade and surrounding areas, including Canton, Federal Hill, Fells Point, Harbor East, and Locust Point. “Commemorating our Nation’s anniversary with a special Fourth of July celebration at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor is a statement to the importance this location holds in the history of America,” says Laura Gamble, PNC regional president for Greater Maryland. “PNC Bank, as long-time resident of the Inner Harbor, is honored to be sponsoring the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s participation in this event and proud to bring all of the parties together to make it happen.”
“A huge thanks to BOPA, the Waterfront Partnership, BSO, and PNC Bank for making this event possible, and special thanks to the Downtown Partnership, Baltimore Orioles, National Aquarium, American Visionary Arts Museum, and WJZ for partnering to add to the day’s festivities,” Mayor Scott says. “It has been an extremely long two years, and I am thrilled to welcome residents and visitors from all over the region back to the world-famous Inner Harbor for a fun-filled day celebrating our nation’s independence.”
Echoing the Mayor’s enthusiasm, WJZ Vice President and General Manager Kathy Hostetter says, “WJZ has a strong history of supporting the local communities we serve. We couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to bring together our sports, cultural arts, and downtown partnership communities in this very fun-filled and patriotic way.”
In the spirit of partnership, ticketholders to the Orioles’ afternoon home game on July 4 will be able to extend their stadium parking through the evening at no extra cost. Plus, members of the BSO will deliver a special performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Oriole Park to kick off a day of celebrations.
After several years off, AVAM is holding their Pet Parade and Animal Talent Show. Pets of all kinds are encouraged to enter. AVAM founder Rebecca Hoffberger says, “Be they our healing helpers or best friends, our American Visionary Art Museum celebrates our Fourth of July with a patriotic salute to our beloved pets! Come see our costumed parade of owner, kid and adult, and adored pet creature, and for our moment of silence for those lost — including war dogs and porpoises.” Pet registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the pet parade begins at 9:00 a.m. Participation is free. Festivities don’t stop there: For the first time in three years, Top of the World Observation Level, managed by BOPA, is hosting Picnic at the Top on Monday, July 4, 2022, from 7:30–10:00 p.m. This family-friendly event features a one-of-a-kind view of the Inner Harbor and the fireworks display, food, beverage, children’s activities, a DJ, and photo booth.
