After moving to Federal Hill in July, Sam Farrell decided to bring his tradition of daily trash cleanups to his new neighborhood. Almost every morning Farrell walks around for about 30 minutes and picks up trash.
Farrell came to Baltimore from New York where he would do cleanups during his hikes at parks and post them to his Instagram page THE REGROWTH PROJECT (RGP). He started doing this in August 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic as a way to “try to make a difference in the world” and to keep trash out of the waterways.
Farrell accepted a job at New Day USA that brought him to Baltimore last year. He knew he would bring RGP wherever he went.
“I like Federal Hill. It’s a nice neighborhood, but there’s work to be done,” said Farrell, who knew it would be important to keep trash from ending up in the Chesapeake Bay.
Farrell typically wakes up before work on the weekdays and picks up trash near his home. He has a more flexible schedule on the weekends and hits different spots around South Baltimore and the city. Or, if he’s out of town, he’ll pick up trash wherever he is. He posts photos and video updates of his collections, but also documents his walks with photos of the area.
Farrell said he’s interested in doing some group cleanups in the future.
Farrell would love to do this for a living one day. He has raised money selling baseball caps and shirts, and launched a Patreon page where people can donate to his efforts.
