Digital Harbor Teacher Nicole Veltre-Luton Wins Ravens Touchdown for Teachers Award

The Baltimore Ravens and M&T Bank have announced their 2018 Touchdown for Teachers finalists and grand prize winner. The program recognizes and honors local teachers for their leadership, dedication and commitment to education, and for outstanding service to their school, students and community.

The 2018 Touchdown for Teachers finalists are:

Nicole Veltre-Luton – Digital Harbor High School (grand prize winner)

Daniel Bohlman – Homestead Wakefield Elementary School

Amy Mattison – Southgate Elementary School

Chad Pavlekovich – Salisbury Middle School

Raymond Weber – Salem Avenue Elementary School

The grand prize was awarded to Nicole Veltre-Luton, who is the ninth grade Biology and ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at Digital Harbor High School in Baltimore City.

Outside of the classroom, Mrs. Veltre-Luton serves as the Co-Chair of Baltimore Inspiring Connections Outdoors (BICO), which educates and exposes students to the wilderness and helps develop character. Mrs. Veltre-Luton played an instrumental role in Digital Harbor High School becoming a certified Green School in 2016. She is also a faculty advisor for the Digital Harbor Bike Club where they refurbish broken bicycles for student use.

Mrs. Veltre-Luton is heavility involved in her students’ lives, often providing personal transportation for events they cannot otherwise attend. She also serves as a mentor and is known for her dedication in advocating for her students and the surrounding neighborhoods they reside in.

The five finalists each received a personalized Ravens jersey and an award plaque. The runners-up were also awarded $500 in grant funds, while Veltre-Luton was presented with a check for $2,000 in grant funds. Additionally, she will receive a classroom visit by a Ravens’ player, accompanied by Ravens mascot Poe and cheerleaders before the end of the 2017-18 school year. (Details to follow the week of the event.)

The Touchdown for Teachers program is a way to celebrate the positive impact teachers have on students and the entire community.”
