Great Plates of Late Around South Baltimore

Crab Cake at Captain Larry’s

Baltimore is known for its crab cakes and I’ve heard recommendations for the crab cake at Captain Larry’s for years. I finally made a trip up Fort Ave. to see what all the talk was about and it certainly lived up to the hype.

The crab cake, which comes as a sandwich on a brioche roll with chips or as a platter with two sides, is a beast. It’s large, well-seasoned, and packed with delicious crab meat.

Next time someone asks where to get a crab cake in Baltimore, I’m adding Captain Larry’s to the list of recommendations.

Chicken Chesapeake Schnitzel at Das Bier Haus

A crab cake might be the most Baltimore thing ever, but the Chicken Chesapeake Schnitzel on top of crab dip mac and cheese at Das Bier Haus in South Baltimore should be a close second.

The German-inspired piece of lightly fried chicken topped with crab and shredded cheese is very tasty and the mac and cheese makes it a very flavorful and rich combination. Get two forks, you’ll need help finishing it. And, make sure to wash it down with a liter of Hofbräu beer.

Chicken Piccata at Baba’s

Baba’s Mediterranean Kitchen in Riverside is a six-time winner of SouthBMore’s Best with three straight victories in both the Best Carryout and Best BYOB categories. It’s not hard to understand why when you stop by for a meal and see customers constantly coming and going.

One of Baba’s great dishes is the Chicken Piccata. The cage-free chicken marinated and pan-tossed in a caper and lemon dressing is tender and a bit tart, and goes great on top of a bed of Mediterranean rice. It’s a great meal.

Pro tip: Never leave Baba’s without getting some of its delicious hummus and pita bread.

Doughnuts at Sundays

With the addition of Sundays at the Cross Street Market, Federal Hill now has that great doughnut shop that so many have been asking for. The brioche doughnuts are light and fluffy, and topped with rich and delicious flavors.

When it comes to sweet, the Raspberry Almond and French Toast doughnuts are sure to impress.

If you are looking for savory, the NYC Bagel doughnuts have everything bagel seasoning and are stuffed with jalapeño-chive cream cheese. They are really awesome and will fill that need if you can’t decide whether you want a bagel or doughnut for breakfast.

Greek Salad with Chicken at Samos

Two of my favorite foods are Greek salads and chicken souvlaki. At Samos Greek Island Grill you can get your Greek salad topped with a skewer of chicken souvlaki and it’s as good as it sounds.

The Samos Special Salad with Grilled Chicken features a fresh salad with tasty black olives, red onion, pepperoncini, and the Samos Signature Greek Dressing, as well as a side of grilled pita wedges. It’s a lot of flavors and a lot of fresh food. Mix it all together and enjoy!
