Making way for the Phase 3 of Caves Valley Partners’ (CVP) Stadium Square development, the United States Postal Service (USPS) post office in South Baltimore at 1220 Race St. is proposing a relocation to a space less than two blocks away. USPS would move to a 1,200 sq. ft. space at the current Papa John’s at 1200 South Hanover St. and Papa John’s would move to a smaller space in the same shopping center that was previously the location of a medical office. The center is also owned and managed by CVP.
The new post office would serve as a retail location and would share the 20-space parking lot behind the shopping center with Papa John’s and Federal Hill Laundromat. At a public meeting held on Wednesday at Leadenhall Baptist Church, Richard Hancock of USPS called the space an upgrade and said it would be a “win-win” for sales and getting people in and out quicker. USPS is hoping to make the move around September.
USPS held the public meeting to address any concerns or comments before making its final decision. At the meeting attendees shared frustrations about the customer service at the current post office, the long wait times, the lack of adequate air conditioning, and the perception of the bulletproof glass the cashier’s stand. Hancock noted the new location would have better air conditioning and would likely not need the bulletproof glass, but that would be determined by area inspectors. A resident in attendance thought the new location could cause traffic concerns due to high volume at the post office. Overall, however, attendees were satisfied with the proposed new location.
USPS is allowing 30 days for comments before it makes its final decision. Comment can be sent to:

The site of the current post office, along with other properties on the 1200 block of Race and Leadenahall St., will have the largest retail component of any of the three blocks of Stadium Square along with apartments and offices. Construction is currently underway for a six-story, 72,000 sq. ft. office building on the 100 block of W. Ostend St. across from the post office and CVP is planning a second office building on an adjacent 1.3 acre lot. A building with 299 market-rate apartments, 14,000 sq. ft. of retail, and 450-500 parking spaces is currently under construction on the 1100 block of Race and Leadenhall St. and a four- to five-story apartment building with 6,000 sq. ft. of retail and 30 to 50 affordable apartment units for veterans will also be constructed on the same block.
