CCBC Interior Design Program in conjunction with the MADE: In America™ All American House™ at the Carroll Mansion in Baltimore Maryland is pleased to announce both the Opening of the 2016 All American House™ May 1, 2016 – July 10, 2016 and that the CCBC Interior Design Program has won both the “Best in Use of Materials” category winner and is the overall “Best in Design” award winner for their Living Room design. CCBC also received special recognition from Baltimore City Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings Blake, for their role in the transformation of the historic Carroll Mansion.
In collaboration with the MADE: In America http://www.madeinamerica-usa.org/ non-profit organization, CCBC Interior Design Program students participated in the 2016 All American House at the Carroll Mansion in Baltimore City. An initiative of MADE: In America, the house project is created with the support of the United States Department of Commerce, Office of Textiles and Apparel. The All American House was developed created to showcase emerging American designers and award winning manufacturers, and to bring about a new vision and purpose for Historic House properties. This is the second All American House the organization has sponsored.
As part of a design challenge student design teams from four schools, including CCBC, designed a room within the historic house setting using American made furniture and furnishings to reflecting a present-day American aesthetic.
A team of eight CCBC students Crystal Evans, Jason Fischer, Laura Fitzpatrick, Kate Gomprecht, Nodji Maouyo, Sherrie Rashid, Dee Rollins, and Ashley Williams along with Interior Design Program Coordinator, Laura Kimball participated in a two-semester course special project. The 2015 Fall semester included historical and cultural research for project context and proposal development for the redesign of the Carroll Mansion Living Room with plan implementation during the 2016 spring semester.
CCBC Living Room Design Concept:
Charles Carroll, signer of the Declaration of Independence, could be likened to early American royalty. His successful business and political ventures positioned him to access the best of what money could buy. His daughter Mary, would have dressed the living room with a similar but softer sensibility in her time.
This living room interprets the Carrolls as a modern family, yet nods to tradition. The room boasts its architectural details including the existing millwork, marble fireplace, empire chandelier and federal mirrors. A custom student-designed “Carroll Toile” textile softens the windows without weighting the wall. Updated furniture silhouettes enhance the room’s original details bridging classical, traditional and contemporary styles. This sophisticated room shows a restrained background palette of greys, creams and whites accented by lively pops of color found in the bold abstract artwork and decorative details. Overall, the living room offers an inviting, warm, friendly, and elegant yet present-day American aesthetic.
The room features American Made and Maryland made furniture and furnishings from Beachley Furniture, Century, Donghia, Emmanuel Nicolaidis, Hickory Chair, Kate G Designs, Kelly L. Walker Niermann Weeks, Rockland Industries, Salvations Architectural Furnishings, and Mclain Wiesand. Painting was done by Sheldon & Sons, Inc. using Sherwin Williams Paints.
