Regi’s American Bistro owner Alan Morstein informed SouthBMore.com that the restaurant will officially close for service on April 7th “barring anything unforeseen.” The restaurant, which is located at 1002 Light St., is currently listed for sale.
Morstein owns the 3,252 sq. ft. two-building property, the restaurant, and the accompanying liquor license. The business and liquor license are currently listed for $399,000 with a $7,000/month asking price for rent; and the property, business, and liquor license is currently listed $850,000. He said that there have been “bites” when referring to sale offers.
Morstein is looking to open a smaller restaurant in the Baltimore area after the sale of Regi’s. “It will have a limited menu extracting some of Regi’s most popular dishes, plus beer and wine,” he told SouthBMore.com in January. “To do that in a smaller environment would be a lovely way to ride out.”
Morstein said he is also looking to spend more time with his four grandchildren.
“I’m in a transitional phase with many opportunities that I need to explore. I am very excited about what the future holds for me as well as the new owners of Regi’s,” Morstein told SouthBMore.com in an email yesterday. “I am keeping the restaurant open out of pure sentiment. It’s very difficult to say goodbye to something that is a piece of your life for so long.”
Morstein said he has big plans for the final night on April 7th and noted it will be by special reservation only. He said it’s the night when, “the fat lady sings.”
Regi’s serves lunch and dinner every day with daily dishes and specials including soups, appetizers, sandwiches, entrees, and entree salads. Regi’s is open for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant has a bar; a seven-day beer, wine, and liquor license; two dining rooms; a kitchen; a covered outdoor patio; and an office and storage space.
“To be around for 15 years is a testimony to the spot, the neighborhood, and the restaurant,” Morstein said in January.
Regi’s has been open since 1978 and Morstein is the third owner. Regi’s yearly sales are $1 million, according to the Business & Commercial Ventures’ listing. Morstein said it is not his call if the new owner wants to keep the name or change it.
Morstein has spent many years in the restaurant industry, previously owning delis in Baltimore and Ocean City and later starting the Talking Turkey franchise that once had more than 28 locations.
Restaurants also hitting the market in Federal Hill in recent months are Stalking Horse, the former Boiler Room, and the former Metropolitan.
