Echoes Vintage has opened an approximately 1,000 sq. ft. shop at 1057 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The space was formerly an office for Nationwide Insurance.
Echoes Vintage is owned by John Ward, who recently moved back to his home state of Maryland after living in Houston, Texas. Ward sold his vintage items at a collective space called Retropolis in Houston. “My friends and family are in Maryland and I wanted to get back,” Ward told SouthBMore.com. “I thought Baltimore is a town that appreciates the eclectic nature of what I sell.”
Echoes Vintage sells men’s and women’s retro clothes and costumes that are at least 20 years old, including some items dating back the early 1900s. “I try to stay up with the trends and cyclical nature in fashion, and get that stuff in the store,” said Ward.
Echoes Vintage focuses mostly on clothes but also sells some glasses, bags, and shoes. Ward is looking to get more accessories in the future.
Ward stocks Echoes Vintage with vintage items he finds at estate sales, thrift stores, and through wholesale sources. People are also always offering him “interesting” stuff to sell, according to Ward. “I’m always keeping an eye out for cool stuff,” he said.
Ward told SouthBMore.com that he looked in Hampden and Federal Hill for a storefront, but thought Federal Hill was the better fit. “There is a lot of opportunity and a lot going on in Federal Hill, and I’m in a really central location,” he said.
Ward also noted that he’s excited about the upcoming renovation of the Cross Street Market which is just a few doors down from Echoes Vintage. “I love having the Cross Street Market here, I go there all the time,” he said. “The more stuff here the merrier.”
Ward said his Federal Hill space just needed some cosmetic improvements. Ward runs Echoes Vintage along with his wife Staci Ward. The store is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1030am to 630pm and Sundays from 11am to 5pm.
Echoes Vintage joins several other new Federal Hill boutiques including Thistle Butter Collective and Irregular Exposure Showroom & Fashion Academy.
