Diablo Doughnuts is relocating from 717 S. Broadway in Fell’s Point to 1035 Light St. in Federal Hill. Diablo Doughnuts, which previously shared a storefront with Hot Tomatoes, is moving to the former home of Felici Cafe, which closed last month. Diablo Doughnuts made the announcement last week on social media.
Diablo Doughnuts is owned by Fell’s Point native Michael Roslan, who was looking all over the area for a bigger space and kitchen for his growing doughnut business. He quickly jumped on the available space in Federal Hill after friend Sarah Simington, owner of Blue Moon Too, sent him a picture of the “for rent” sign.
Roslan will begin renovations to the space in December and is hoping to open at the beginning of January.
“I really like the architecture of Federal Hill and its old school, small town feel in the middle of a big city,” he said. “People are always out walking and I’ve already met tons of neighbors over here.”
Roslan noted that many families who have visited him in Fell’s Point have been from Federal Hill and called his new neighborhood very family friendly. Along with Simington, Roslan is close friends with the owners of Brightside Boutique, Brightside Tattoo Shop, and Smoke BBQ, which is coming to Cross Street Market. He noted he wants to bring more of the “punk rock” vibe to Federal Hill like Simington did with Blue Moon Too. Simington also has a location in Fell’s Point.
Diablo Doughnuts makes its doughnuts and all of the toppings from scratch. Popular combinations include the Unicorn Fart with Fruity Pebbles and icing, Old Bay Caramel, Maple Bacon, Blueberry Basil, Blackberry Lime, and Sweet Potato. Roslan said the dough for his yeast-rise doughnuts is not too sweet and will work well for sandwiches he plans to sell at Diablo Doughnuts.
Along with doughnuts and sandwiches, Diablo Doughnuts will also sell Zeke’s coffee. Diablo Doughnuts has also partnered with BMORE LICKS ice cream shop in Canton. BMORE LICKS will sell Diablo doughnuts and Diablo Doughnuts will sell BMORE LICKS ice cream. Roslan said this is a great way to still have a presence near Fell’s Point.
Diablo Doughnuts will have a 10 ft. bar and table seating. It will be open seven days a week. The hours are not yet set in stone, but Roslan will likely open very early in the morning and stay open until about 6pm.
When Diablo Doughnuts opened a few years ago, Roslan and his team were making about 20 dozen doughnuts a day, and now it’s closer to 150. Roslan said that Diablo Doughnuts also does a lot of catering and weddings, and that his doughnuts are used by Alexander’s Tavern and Wicked Sisters. He’s excited to be closer to Downtown where he gets a lot of doughnut orders.
Roslan said he is most excited about the new kitchen in Federal Hill, which will be about four times the size of his current kitchen.
Roslan will most likely add a couple new employees to its current team of six.
Federal Hill will be getting two other doughnut businesses with Sundays coming to Cross Street Market and ZuZu’s coming to S. Charles St. Roslan said that most neighborhoods have a bar and a pizza shop on every corner and that the city will support everyone who has a good product.
