South Baltimore Crime Updates

From Councilman Eric Costello regarding incidents in Federal Hill, Otterbein, and Inner Harbor:

Southern District
Carjacking Arrest

On June 15, 2019, at approximately 11:00pm, officers were called to the 700 block of Light Street for a report of a carjacking.

When officers arrived, they found a 19-year old woman who told them her car was just stolen. According to the victim, she was stopped on Light Street when an unknown suspect approached and ordered her to exit her vehicle. The suspect then assaulted the victim before taking her car.

A short time later, officers observed the victim’s vehicle involved in a crash in the 300 block of Light Street. A 26-year old man was arrested and a handgun was recovered from the car. The suspect was transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained in the crash.

During the course of their investigation, detectives learned that at approximately 10:55pm, the same suspect attempted to steal another vehicle in the 600 block of S. Charles Street. During this incident, the suspect approached a vehicle and demanded the driver open his door. The driver refused and the suspect fired a single shot at the car before leaving the location. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and called police.

Detectives from the Citywide Robbery Unit are continuing to investigate these incidents. Detectives will work to determine if this suspect is responsible for any other crimes in the area. The suspect will be identified after he has been released from the hospital and formally charged.

Southern District Homicide Investigation

On June 8, 2019, at about 1:51 a.m., Southern District patrol officers were in the Sharp Street area investigating an unrelated incident. While there officers heard gunfire and began canvassing the surrounding area for evidence of a shooting.

When officers arrived in the 900 block of Peach Street they discovered a 37 year-old male and a 33 year-old male suffering from gunshot wounds.

A medic was summoned and transported the victims to area hospitals. The 37 year-old male victim was pronounced dead by medical personnel at University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center shortly after arrival.

Homicide detectives responded to the location and assumed control of the investigation.
