South Baltimore Gateway Partnership Awarded $483,863 in Casino Impact Fund Grants in Winter Cycle

In April, the South Baltimore Gateway Partnership (SBGP), a nonprofit which manages half of South Baltimore’s casino Local Impact Grants, announced $483,863 in new grants to support 25 community projects across South and Southwest Baltimore.

SBGP manages approximately $7 million/year in Local Impact Grant funding from Maryland casinos, with an equal amount managed by the Casino Local Development Council (LDC), which has an advisory board of community members and spends funds at the direction of the Mayor of Baltimore. SBGP awards Community Grants twice a year.

SBGP includes staff, Executive Director Brad Rogers, and a Board of Directors comprised of members of neighborhood associations, business owners and nonprofit directors, and elected officials.

SBGP budgets about $1 million/year to Community Grants, about $1.5 million/year to Enhanced Services to public spaces in the community, and $3 million/year to Transformational Projects. “We budget conservatively, so if we have additional money, we can make everyone happy by doing more,” said Rogers.

The biggest community grants were awarded to youth football program The Cherry Hill Eagles Foundation, which received an $85,954.90 grant to launch new mentorship program and purchase supplies and sports uniforms; Salem Lutheran Church Baltimore in Riverside which received a $49,995 grant to renovate its basement hall into Riverside Third Space for community programming; Riverside Neighborhood Association which received $49,500 for renovations, murals, and new furniture at Riverside Park Pool; Institute for Local Self- Reliance which received $47,500 to operate the Baltimore Composting Community Project; GiveFit which received $39,847 to add new on-demand fitness sites at Ella Bailey Recreation Center in Riverside and Southwest Baltimore Charter School; Federal Hill Main Street which received $36,787 for a street cleaning program in the business corridor; NEWfit which received $36,363 to launch athletics leagues at elementary and middle schools; and Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Baltimore which recieved $34,802 for new STEM and wellness programs at Westport Homes Boys & Girls Club.

Additional grants were awarded to nonprofits to support programming and events around South Baltimore. See the full list here.

“We are excited to see our investments in the neighborhoods we serve beginning to bear fruit in so many ways—from an increase in healthy activities for families and seniors to cleaner, greener parks for everyone.” said Rogers in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with area residents to make lasting changes that will truly improve the quality of life in communities that have been under-served for too long.”

“We want to make sure there are spaces in South Baltimore to come together and enjoy being in South Baltimore,” Rogers told SouthBMore.com.

Transformational projects that SBGP is working on include the Middle Branch initiative. This is getting underway with a design competition that aims to turn the Middle Branch Waterfront into a more than 11-mile park system in South Baltimore along the shoreline of the Patapsco River. Parks and People Foundation is managing the project on behalf of the City of Baltimore and SBGP has contributed $350,000 to this project so far. Once an architecture firm wins the design competition, that firm will likely spend about $1 million to $2 million on the new design plan for the Middle Branch. The project will be done in phases.

SBGP has already taken on maintenance of Middle Branch Park on the south shore of the Middle Branch. This maintenance includes planting new trees and clearing overgrowth along the shoreline to open up waterfront views. SBGP is also part of the funding for a new trash wheel on the Gwynns Falls which contributes 60 to 80% of the trash in the Middle Branch, according to Rogers. The wheel will likely be installed this year.

SBGP has also committed $1 million to the Middle Branch Fitness and Wellness Center at Reedbird Park in Cherry Hill. Rogers said SBGP will likely commit another $1.2 million for the project. The Middle Branch Fitness and Wellness Center will include four multi-use sports fields, including one with a turf surface; a new $16.5-million, 32,000 sq. ft. fitness and wellness center; a dog park; new basketball courts; a new playground; an extended path system that connects to the Gwynns Falls Trail; fitness pods; plazas; pavilions; a field house; bike racks; and a parking lot. This project is expected to break ground this fall.

Another turf field will be added in South Baltimore with the support of SBGP funds.

In addition the Community Grants, SBGP’s board has approved spending $900,000 in total operating support funds to three community organizations that are dedicated to development properties. The first recipient is the Cherry Hill Development Corporation (CHDC). The two other organizations have not yet been announced.

Enhanced Services supported by SBGP includes grass mowing and improvements to Federal Hill Park, improvements to Middle Branch Park, planting and beautification projects around Federal Hill Main Street, and free youth sports leagues in South Baltimore in partnership with Volo City. Another turf field will be added to South Baltimore with the support of SBGP Enhanced Services funds.

Riverside Third Space Coming to Salem Lutheran Church After Receiving Casino Impact Grant

Salem Lutheran Church Baltimore is renovating its basement Fellowship Hall at 1530 Battery Ave. in Riverside and renaming it Riverside Third Space. The project was made possible because of a $49,995 Community Grant from South Baltimore Gateway Partnership, which manages South Baltimore’s Local Impact Grants from Maryland casinos.

The project also received a grant from the Krug Family Foundation and donations from Salem Lutheran’s members.

Salem Lutheran Pastor Lauren Muratore and Deacon and Riverside Third Space Project Manager Sara Jane Baublitz said they envision it as a shared space for the community. Since it’s not a home or place of work, they are calling it a third space. They are hoping to host events that promote wellness, healthy eating, and recreation.

The basement has a 2,100 sq. ft. hall with a stage that has been the home to local performance group Riverside Stage and has also served as the venue for Thomas Johnson Elementary Middle School’s plays. There is also a working kitchen and a 910 sq. ft. classroom that can be divided into two rooms.

The renovation project will add new flooring; painted walls; new light fixtures; painted cabinets, stainless steel prep surfaces, and a new countertops in the kitchen; updated bathrooms; a projector; new tables; and chairs.

The Fellowship Hall at Salem Lutheran has hosted Riverside Neighborhood Association meetings, Alcoholics Anonymous, Fit4Mom classes, yoga classes, Girl Scout events, Fitness Fun & Games, movie nights, play groups, and one-time events. Riverside Third Space will continue to host similar events and will have a “pay what you can” policy for using the venue. Salem Lutheran has also used the basement for BINGO nights and coffee after church.

The Riverside Third Space improvements will be completed through a mix of volunteer events and contractor services. The space has been cleared out in recent weeks to remove things that have collected in Fellowship Hall over the years.

Pastor Muratore said Riverside Third Space will be an inclusive space for people of all backgrounds.

Deacon Baublitz said she is “so grateful” to receive the grant and has always been thinking about ways to activate the space. “We had the space, we just needed the cash,” she said.

Salem Lutheran will also be adding a community garden in raised beds outside the church building along E. Randall St. Pastor Muratore said people who need herbs and vegetables from the garden will be able to come by and grab them.

Salem Lutheran, which has been in Riverside since 1885, has its sanctuary on the first floor and a portion of the property is leased to daycare program Beth El @ Federal Hill.

Carjacking Arrest

On June 15, 2019, at approximately 11:00pm, officers were called to the 700 block of Light Street for a report of a carjacking.

When officers arrived, they found a 19-year old woman who told them her car was just stolen. According to the victim, she was stopped on Light Street when an unknown suspect approached and ordered her to exit her vehicle. The suspect then assaulted the victim before taking her car.

A short time later, officers observed the victim’s vehicle involved in a crash in the 300 block of Light Street. A 26-year old man was arrested and a handgun was recovered from the car. The suspect was transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries he sustained in the crash.

During the course of their investigation, detectives learned that at approximately 10:55pm, the same suspect attempted to steal another vehicle in the 600 block of S. Charles Street. During this incident, the suspect approached a vehicle and demanded the driver open his door. The driver refused and the suspect fired a single shot at the car before leaving the location. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and called police.

Detectives from the Citywide Robbery Unit are continuing to investigate these incidents. Detectives will work to determine if this suspect is responsible for any other crimes in the area. The suspect will be identified after he has been released from the hospital and formally charged.

Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival Press Release:

3rd Annual Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival Expands Programming, Part of Major July 4th Celebration

South Baltimore Celebration Attracts Thousands from Maryland, D.C., Pennsylvania and Ohio

Baltimore, June 6, 2019 –A celebration of the performing and visual arts, and cultural vibrancy of South Baltimore, the 3rd Annual Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival will return to Middle Branch Park (3301 Waterview Ave., Baltimore, MD 21230) July 4 from 1:00 p.m.-10 p.m., with expanded programming that includes performances, food trucks, interactive “ARTivities,” and a fireworks show. This is a celebration of freedom, unity, and remembrance. A bridge that has historically divided communities will unite South Baltimore as the picturesque backdrop to the area’s first major 4th of July celebration in decades. Community leaders from Cherry Hill and Port Covington have united to activate both shores of the Hanover Street bridge for a storied shared experience for Baltimore City and beyond (www.baltimore4th.com).

Co-founded by Cherry Hill playwright and great-grandmother Shirley Foulks and Youth Resiliency Institute Executive Director and musician Fanon Hill, the free festival will feature three headliners: house and dance music icon Crystal Waters, reggae legend Sister Carol, and indie soul artist Navasha Daya, as well as musical artists working across genres including soul, house, jazz, latin, hip-hop and more. Also performing will be members of the Youth Resiliency Institute’s Baltimore Guitarists Against Violence program (BGAV), a program which provides children and youth ages 8-18 living in communities with high rates of violence with an opportunity to learn how to play guitar. This year, master instrument maker Abu The Flutemaker and Safe Streets Cherry Hill will be honored at the festival for their commitment to the Cherry Hill community.

“Everyone from across Baltimore and beyond is invited to celebrate Cherry Hill’s historical and cultural significance as we tell our nation’s full story on Independence Day in South Baltimore’s Middle Branch park,” said Festival Co-founder Fanon Hill. “The future of Baltimore City and our country is dependent upon our ability to amplify the voices of those who historically have been silenced. We are grateful to South Baltimore Gateway Partnership for being the lead funder of this year’s festival. Their support allows us to make it bigger and better than year’s past.”

The Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival is focused on reducing isolation and developing relationships with important elements of Baltimore’s mainstream arts sector, as there is a scarcity of relevant cultural arts opportunities for Cherry Hill residents in their own neighborhood. Going beyond the event itself, festival organizers provide important arts training and employment opportunities for Cherry Hill residents and artists so that they can become better at their own creative practice and experience a greater level of visibility and sustainability.”Through yearlong community- based art workshops and workforce development and employment opportunities for community members of all ages, the Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival demonstrates the tremendous impact of equitable access to arts and culture in Cherry Hill,” said Michael Middleton, Executive Director of the Cherry Hill Development Corporation.

Along with the festival itself, the Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival provides yearlong arts education, cross-generational arts mentorship and outreach in Baltimore Maryland’s historic Cherry Hill community and throughout South Baltimore.

A South Baltimore neighborhood, Cherry Hill is historically significant as the nation’s first, largest (and likely the only) planned suburban-style community for African Americans. Cherry Hill is also home to one of the most densely populated housing projects in the country.
The history of the development of public housing in Cherry Hill is one of the most striking examples of deliberate residential racial segregation in any city. Racial segregation in Baltimore City is also reflected in its cultural life.

“The Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival is a full day of family-friendly fun, cultural arts and community engagement. We owe it to our children to share—and preserve— Cherry Hill’s historic story,” said Festival Co-founder Shirley Foulks.

Free Festival Parking is available at Harbor Hospital’s Overflow Parking lot – 3001 S Hanover St.; Broening Park- 3001 East Dr.; and City Garage 101 West Dickman St. A map of the event can be found here: http://baltimore4th.com/images/Official-4th-of-July-MAP.jpg

Meet Conor and Lucas Hopkins, the Five- and Seven-Year-Olds Who Started a Plant Watering Business in South Baltimore

Last summer, Lucas Hopkins, who is now seven, told his mother Amber Hopkins that he wanted money and asked how he could get some. She told him to come up with some kind of simple job that people might want. Lucas Hopkins had watered plants for his Riverside neighbors in the past and thought he could do that same service for more people. He got his mother, who is a teacher in Howard County and off during the summer, and brother Conor Hopkins, who is now five, on board and they launched Green Thumbs Plant Care.

Amber Hopkins let people know about Green Thumbs on neighborhood Facebook pages, and clients started to contact her for their services. The Hopkins crew would get on their bikes each morning with their watering cans and began watering plants at about five houses every day between regulars and families on vacation. Each day Lucas and Conor Hopkins would wear their uniform of green shirts and brown khaki shorts, a uniform they picked because it’s the colors of a tree.

Green Thumbs watered 1,015 plants last year, plus helped feed a cat, bunny, lizard, and some fish. The Hopkins would water plants outside people’s homes, as well as water plants inside, on decks, and in back yards when people were away on vacation.

“It’s a really fun job,” said both Lucas and Conor Hopkins.

Green Thumbs charges $2 for every six plants watered. In 2018, Lucas and Conor Hopkins made more than $500. They split their earnings on buying treats and toys; savings as they both started Roth IRAs with the help of their mother; and giving money to the poor box at the Catholic Community of South Baltimore churches. Lucas and Conor both cashed in last year with Pokemon cards, toy truck, stuffed animals, cake pops from Starbucks, and a lot of ice cream from Miss Twist.

The Hopkins crew is back at it this year with services beginning on July 1st. They already have clients lined up for this summer and are always looking for more business.

Lucas Hopkins said he likes getting the money, but also likes to “help Baltimore become beautiful” by helping keep the plants and flowers alive. Lucas Hopkins is not a fan of the rain as those were days when Green Thumbs’ services were not needed.

Amber Hopkins and husband Ken Hopkins are both very proud of their boys. They both remember doing simple jobs when they were growing up like mowing lawns and taking in neighbors’ mail.

“It’s fun to go out with them and talk about saving money,” said Amber Hopkins. “Now they talk about both wants and needs with their money. To hear them evolve economically is fun.”

Some days Lucas or Conor Hopkins wouldn’t want to get out and serve their clients, but Amber and Ken Hopkins said their sons pushed each other to stay motivated.

Lucas and Conor Hopkins will spend the summer watering plants around the neighborhood but, come the fall, the business will take another pause as Conor will start kindergarten and Lucas will start the second grade at Francis Scott Key Elementary Middle School.

Vietnamese Pho and Banh Mi Shop ‘Phubs’ Opens at Cross Street Market

Federal Hill now has its first Vietnamese restaurant as Phubs opened last week in a stall at the newly-renovated Cross Street Market. Phubs was started in Hanover, Maryland by brothers Chuong and Paul Nguyen five years ago.

Phubs focuses on Vietnamese street food favorites pho and banh mi. It also serves rice bowls, salads, sides, and specialty drinks. Chuong Nguyen said recipes come from his family’s take on pho from Northern Vietnam. He noted that Northern Vietnamese pho has more spice and Southern Vietnamese pho tends to be a bit sweeter.

Phubs’ pho beef broth is simmered with bones and additional Vietnamese spices for more than 24 hours. Chuong Nguyen said this process allows the broth to get all the nutrients out of the bones. He said they get a lot of feedback that people feel a lot better after slurping down the broth. Not only can customers get the broth as pho, they can get a cup of broth to drink like coffee.

Phubs also has a veggie broth that is simmered with eight fresh vegetables and 10 Vietnamese spices. Chuong Nguyen said he and Paul Nguyen spent a lot of time developing their own recipe for the veggie broth. They wanted to avoid using any powders.

Pho orders include steak which has a mix of rare steak and house-smoked brisket; The Phubolicious which has sliced steak, brisket, meatball, spinach, and napa cabbage; sliced chicken breast pho with beef broth; vegetarian with napa cabbage, spinach, celery, carrots, shiitake mushrooms, and tofu with veggie broth; and shrimp pho with spinach, shiitake mushrooms, and beef broth.

Phubs has five different food options that can be ordered as a bahn mi sub on a buttered french baguette and topped with house pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, and cucumbers; on top of rice; or on top of a salad. The options are citrus sesame chicken, BBQ pork, bulgogi sliced steak, sautéed portobello mushrooms, and phun yum shrimp.  All the meats are grilled and all the marinades are made in-house.

Side orders are fried shrimp and pork spring rolls and veggie chips which are made from tapioca and topped with vegetable spices.

The house-brewed specialty drinks are a bubble Thai tea with half and half, bubble coconut tea with coconut milk, and the french-pressed Viet iced coffee.

The Phubs stall has a pho-themed graffiti mural done by artist John McGrath and metal accents. The top header has a Phubs sign and will soon have a chain link fence background. The Nguyens are going with the street theme to go with its street food concept. The stall is located next to a Cross Street Market common seating area.

Phubs will soon add online ordering and will add GrubHub delivery in the near future.

Phubs has five employees but is looking to add to its staff. It is open Monday to Thursday from 11am to 9pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 10pm, and Sunday from 11am to 6pm.

Federal Hill will be the third location for Phubs, following the recently-opened location in Wilmington, Delaware. “Federal Hill has been a place we have visited since we were kids,” said Chuong Nguyen. “It’s a cool place. The Cross Street Market is a place we always hung out and pregamed at before O’s and Ravens games. It definitely needed some revitalization. When we heard that was going on, they (the leasing team at CANAdev) reached out to see if we were interested. We said, heck yeah!”

The Phubs team at a Cross Street Market announcement in October, 2018.

South Baltimore Crime Updates

From Councilman Eric Costello regarding incidents in Federal Hill, Otterbein, and Inner Harbor:

Southern District

Ropewalk To Close for Renovations in July, Will Return as a “Family-Friendly” Restaurant with Duckpin Bowling

Heading into its 25th year in Federal Hill, Ropewalk Tavern is looking to reinvent itself and “cater more to the locals and families in South Baltimore,” said owner Anne McFaul. She noted that less and less people from outside the city are coming downtown in recent years.

Ropewalk will close on July 1st to start a renovation project that will add mini duckpin bowling lanes and virtual reality, gaming, and arcade systems. It will also include a mostly cosmetic renovation of the existing spaces.

The duckpin lanes will be about 40 ft. long as opposed to the  standard 60 ft. The Ropewalk team is still in the planning and design stage, but there will likely be at least four duckpin lanes. They are looking into either placing the lanes on the second floor or potentially the back bar room on the first floor.

The Ropewalk team is building off the success of its beach bars in Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia that have different activities like playgrounds, corn hole, ring toss, and fire pits. The team is also opening a new restaurant in Ocean City called Alley Oops which will have a shark tank, mini duckpin bowling, and around 50 games. McFaul said they will see what’s popular at Alley Oops and look to bring those games to Federal Hill.

McFaul said games at Ropewalk could include virtual reality system Hologate, Mario Kart, and Connect Four Basketball. They will start installing games in late-August and early-September.

Ropewalk will also be updating its menu with “upscale pub food.” Ropewalk switched to an entree-focused seafood menu in recent years, but the demand wasn’t there, according to McFaul. They will bring some popular items from the beach like crabcake egg rolls and Bada Bing Shrimp to the updated menu, and will continue serving its selection of wings.

Many sections of Ropewalk will be renovated to “clean the place up and give it a shine.” This will include refinished floors, bars, and walls at the bar which dates back to prohibition. Some changes will likely be made to the exterior as well.

Ropewalk will continue to host dueling pianos and its late-night hours on weekends. The team hopes to create a more family-friendly and dynamic environment while keeping its existing clientele which brings in a lot of business on weekend nights. They are also hoping it’s a popular place for birthday parties and events.

Ropewalk will reopen in October and will host its Grand Re-Opening and 24th Anniversary Party on October 18th.

“We are looking to get more weekday business and get more families coming in here,” said McFaul. “A lot of the younger generation aren’t just looking to go out and have a beer, they are looking for entertainment too.”

McFaul noted that business has slowed in Federal Hill in recent years, but the team has a soft spot for the Federal Hill location because it’s the original. Employees in Federal Hill will be offered positions at the beach.

The Ropewalk team also has ownership in Stalking Horse, which is now only open Thursday to Sunday and no longer has a food menu. McFaul said the business is for sale and noted that there has been some strong interest, but nothing has happened yet.

P.F. Chang’s was sold earlier this year to investment firms TriArtisan Capital Partners LLC and Paulson & Co. Inc. for about $700 million, Bloomberg reported. The chain had been saddled with debt amid heavy competition. P.F. Chang’s also has locations in White Marsh, Towson, Columbia and Annapolis.

Sagamore Spirit Teams Up with Sierra Nevada

Port Covington’s Sagamore Spirit has teamed up with popular beer company Sierra Nevada on a new beer called the Sierra Nevada Rye Ale. The beer is aged for six months in rye whiskey barrels from Sagamore Spirit. From a press release:

That time in the barrel graces Sierra Nevada’s legendary red ale with distinct notes from Sagamore Spirit’s signature rye whiskey, like clove, nutmeg and hints of walnut and brown sugar. The result is a crisp yet round red ale that delivers an herbal and spicy jolt at 10% ABV.

“We know the magic that happens when our whiskey ages in freshly charred oak, so we couldn’t wait to see what amazingly crafted beer that met our barrels would taste like. It was love at first sip,” said Brian Treacy, President of Sagamore Spirit. “Our team is always looking to bring the taste of Maryland-style rye whiskey to more people, and thanks to this collaboration with Sierra Nevada, we’ve found a whole new way to do that.  We couldn’t wait to taste this beer, aged in our charred oak and then barrel-aged at Sierra Nevada.”

The collaboration produced Sierra Nevada’s first-ever beer in aged rye whiskey barrels. Sagamore Spirit has worked with wineries to create limited edition whiskies and with local Maryland brewers to donate their used barrels.

Sierra Nevada Rye Ale is available at select off-premise accounts, including Total Wine stores and on-premise accounts throughout Maryland for a limited time only.

Gap and Gap Kids Closing at the Gallery at Harborplace

Gap and Gap Kids is closing its 11,000 sq. ft. space at the Gallery at Harborplace at 200 E. Pratt St. From Baltimore Business Journal’s article on May 23rd:

Signs on the windows of the third-level stores Thursday announced deep discounts related to the closings. Gap and GapKids are anchors in the 170,000-square-foot Gallery at 200 E. Pratt St.

The departure of the two stores at the Gallery comes after San Francisco-based Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS) announced in February it was closing 230 stores in the U.S. by 2021. The company said the closings would happen mostly as leases expire, as it tries to balance its online, outlet and regular sales.

One Gap employee said the Gallery closing was “only a matter of time” because the store was seeing fewer customers in the past couple years.
