‘Pizza di Joey,’ ‘Old Line Cocktail and Wine Bar,’ and ‘Gangster Vegan Organics’ Coming to Cross Street Market

Cross Street Market developer Caves Valley Partners (CVP) and its leasing team at CANAdev announced three new tenants today for the soon-to-reopen market. These tenants include Pizza di Joey, Old Line Cocktail and Wine Bar, and Gangster Vegan Organics. All three are expected to open in early-summer.

Cross Street Market has been closed since January and renovations began in April 2018. The market is expected to reopen in the coming weeks with returning tenants Fenwick Choice Meats, Steve’s Lunch, and The Sweet Shoppe.

Pizza di Joey is well known in South Baltimore as owner Joey Vanoni lives in Riverside, preps his food at a space in the community, and has run his pizza truck in Baltimore since 2014. Last summer he hosted SoBo Food Truck Nites at Knights of Columbus in Locust Point.

Vanoni is a native of New Jersey and worked in pizza shops growing up. Vanoni joined the United States Navy after high school and would bake pizzas to lift the spirit of his fellow service members on submarines and at bases. When deployed to Afghanistan, his team built him a brick oven on their base and every Friday became “pizza day.” Vanoni has been committed to hiring veterans for his pizza truck.

Vanoni and his team serve authentic New York-style brick oven pizza. Cross Street Market is the first brick-and-mortar location for Pizza di Joey and will feature a variety of its “Monster Slices,” which are approximately nine inches wide at the crust and 12 inches long. Its rotating menu will include classics like cheese and pepperoni pizzas, its buffalo chicken pizza, and innovative offerings such as Alyssa’s Crab Dip Pizza made with jumbo lump crabmeat and the Reuben Pizza with Vanoni’s seven-hour braised corned beef. Vanoni works with local farms and vendors for ingredients for his pizzas.

The stall will also include beer and wine service and a take-out window offering late-night carry-out slices.

Old Line Cocktail and Wine Bar is a concept from Baltimore distillery Old Line Spirits which produces an American single malt whiskey and aged Caribbean rum. Cross Street Market patrons can expect a menu similar to the distillery’s in-house cocktail bar, The Ready Room, with a focus on locally- and regionally-sourced wines, beers, and spirits. The menu will feature classic and signature cocktails, including frozen cocktails and coffee drinks, as well as a rotating selection of beers and wines on tap.

“Old Line is excited for the opportunity to collaborate on this project,” said Mark McLaughlin, co-founder of Old Line Spirits, in a press release. “We are big supporters of Maryland’s distilling, winemaking, and brewing culture and the Cocktail and Wine Bar at Cross Street Market is a fantastic way to showcase those great brands.”

The stall will include 30 seats at the bar and feature TVs for Orioles and Ravens games.

Gangster Vegan Organics has been offering creative vegan dishes since 2014. Its menu is 100% plant-based, organic, free of gluten and soy and it is committed to making it “gangster” to eat healthy. Popular menu items include its taco salad Esta Loca, beet burger Swizz Beets, and kale chips. Menu offerings at Cross Street Market will also include a variety of cold-pressed juices, smoothies, wellness shots, salads, bowls, “burgers,” and raw vegan desserts. Gangster Vegan currently has three locations in Pennsylvania. The Cross Street Market location will be its first Maryland location.

“With our re-opening right around the corner, it’s exciting to have these three businesses join our impressive lineup of vendors,” said Michael Morris of CANAdev in a press release. “From a butchery to Haitian cuisine, a bakery to pizza and ice cream to cold-pressed juices, Cross Street Market will have something for everyone and is poised to once again be the heart of the Federal Hill and South Baltimore community.”

Additional vendors at Cross Street Market will include Ceremony Coffee Roasters, which is based in Annapolis; Annoula’s Kitchen, a modern Mediterranean soup and sandwich place from Anna Leventis, owner of SoBo Market and SoBo Café; Cans Filling Station, a craft beer concept from Will Glass of Taps Fill Station, which has locations at Mt. Vernon Marketplace and The Bourse in Philadelphia; Ono Poké, a poké and Hawaiian-style restaurant that has a location Downtown; Taco Love Grill, a family-run taqueria based in White Marsh; Burger Bar from the team at Southside Diner; Vietnamese pho restaurant from Hanover Phubs; Korean concept Rice Crook; and Haitian cuisine farmer’s market and event business Sobeachy. Specific vendors have not been announced yet, but Cross Street Market will also have a fried chicken stall and a “market within a market” stall which will sell farm-fresh items like produce, sauces, breads, cheese, dairy, pastas, home goods, and more.

Merchants will open through the spring and summer.

Also planned for Cross Street Market is a 5,000 sq. ft. crab house, seafood tavern, and seafood market from Alex Smith’s Atlas Restaurant Group. It will take the former space of Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood at the S. Charles St. entrance. The lease on this space is still being finalized and it is expected to open in April 2020.

Four spaces remain available for lease. Once complete, Cross Street Market will have 22 merchants.

CVP is undertaking an $8-million renovation with contractor MacKenzie. Baltimore Public Markets Corporation (BPMC) still owns the building and contributed $2 million to the renovation to update the systems in the building. CVP has a lease agreement with BPMC for a term of up to 50 years.
