Southern food stall Southrn’ Spice is now open at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. Southrn’ Spice, which opened last month, takes over a stall that was vacated by Royal Farms Chicken earlier this year.
Southrn’ Spice is owned by Chef Rex Murray, who is a veteran of the United States Army and grew up between Memphis, Mississippi, and Indianapolis. Based on his love of Southern food, Murray went to culinary school after serving in the Army, worked in the hospitality industry, and eventually started his own catering company.
As COVID-19 shut down the wedding and corporate event industry, Murray realized he needed to pivot his business, and launched the Southrn’ Spice food truck which he used to visit neighborhoods in the Baltimore area.
Looking for the next move to grow his business, Murray started looking for a brick-and-mortar location. His assistant told him about the popularity of public markets in Baltimore and he began zeroing in on getting a stall. He looked into getting a stall at the revamped Lexington Market, which is under construction, but turned to Cross Street Market after learning Lexington Market is only taking applications at this time.
He fell in love with Cross Street Market when discovering the “turn-key” stall.
Southrn’ Spice’s menu takes inspiration from different parts of the South. It has seafood gumbo as a nod to Louisiana, shrimp and grits from North Carolina, a Nashville hot chicken sandwich, and honey gold wings from Memphis. Murray said fried catfish is big throughout the South, especially where he grew up in Mississippi. He caught them in a local pond growing up.
Additional menu items include plain or red velvet waffles with chicken, a seared lamb chop, honey teriyaki-glazed salmon, baked and “smothered” chicken, grilled or fried shrimp, and the Soulful Rito, which is a burrito filled with catfish, collard greens, and mac and cheese.
Entrees come with two sides which include collard greens, candied yams, mac and cheese, cabbage, cajun fries, onion rings, corn bread, and red beans and rice.
The desserts offered are apple pie, pecan pie, sweet potato pie, banana pudding, and peach cobbler.
Southrn’ Spice is open every day from 11am-8pm, but next month the closing time will be extended to 11pm. Southrn’ Spice will soon open late night on Fridays and Saturdays until 130am with a fried food menu. The stall has a window facing the south side of Cross St., and a new mural will be added soon around this window.
It has six employees.
Southrn’ Spice offers catering with its Southern menu, but Murray also does more traditional wedding menus. The food truck is currently taking a break as the team gets settled in at Cross Street Market, but will be back in neighborhoods soon.
Southrn’ Spice is opening another location in Columbia, which will be a sit-down restaurant. Murray is also looking to open another market stall in Washington, D.C.
