New Traffic Pattern Being Implemented Along Key Highway

Baltimore City Department of Transportation press release:

New Traffic Pattern Being Implemented Along Key Highway

The Baltimore City Department of Transportation would like to advise motorists that a new traffic pattern will soon be implemented along a portion of Key Highway, as construction work progresses for the Key Highway at Light Street Intersection Improvement project.

Starting this evening at 7:00 p.m., crews will begin shifting the work zone along Key Highway between Light Street and Battery Avenue to the center of the roadway.  The new traffic pattern along this portion of Key Highway will be fully implemented by 5:00 a.m. on Friday, August 30, 2019, weather permitting.  Two lanes of through traffic will remain open in each direction for commuters along Key Highway during this phase of construction.  Pedestrian walkways in this area may also be altered to accommodate the new work zone.

Citizens traveling in this vicinity should be on the watch for changing traffic patterns and pedestrian walkways.  The lane closures and new traffic pattern may cause delays along both Key Highway and Light Street, so citizens should allow additional commute time and are encouraged to use alternate routes.

Alfajores Cookie Bakery ‘Dulceology’ Opening in Federal Hill

Sisters Alejandra and Nicole Leiva are moving their Alfajores cookie business Dulceology from a commercial kitchen in Washington, D.C. to a retail space in Federal Hill. Dulceology will take over 1138 S. Charles St. which was a real estate office in recent years and once a pizza shop.

Alejandra and Nicole Leiva were born in El Salvador, grew up in the Washington, D.C. area after immigrating to the United States, and graduated from Towson University. The Leivas said they had a lot of fond memories of trips to Baltimore growing up and immediately fell in love with Federal Hill after taking a walk through the neighborhood. They described it as “amazing, walkable, and calm.”

Alfajores are a popular cookie in Latin America, especially in Argentina, Chile, and Peru. The shortbread-style cookie sandwiches are filled with a rich dulce de leche filling, and can be dusted with powdered sugar or covered in chocolate. The origin of Alfajores dates back to Northern Africa before the cookies were introduced to Spain and then made their way to Latin America. Alfajor translates to luxury in Arabic.

The Leivas grew up around food as their father manufactured restaurant equipment and their mother was a chef. They came across a recipe from their mother and grandmother for Alfajores and challenged themselves to make them. The immediately fell in love with them and soon started giving them as gifts to friends. They then started selling them on Etsy where they have shipped to every state and Puerto Rico.

Alejandra Leiva is a grad student at George Washington University and the sisters entered the school’s 2019 New Venture Competition and were selected as one of the winners. They received a $20,000 grant and were invited into a business accelerator program.

In the accelerator they learned that customers are looking for places to connect with them. Since, Dulceology was mostly an online business, they knew they needed a storefront in a supportive neighborhood. “We immediately picked out the community and vibe that fits our brand,” said Alejandra Leiva.

In reference to Federal Hill she said, “we couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.”

Many of Dulceology’s returning clients are businesses and real estate agents who were giving the cookies as gifts or bringing them to office parties. The Alfajores can be personalized with logos, and the Leivas noted the cookies are more personal than just giving a bottle of wine. Dulceology uses 3D printing technologies for molding and personalizing the cookies. The sisters have noticed the vibrant business scene in Federal Hill and are looking to connect with as many residents and businesses as possible.

1138 S. Charles St. will not just be a commercial kitchen for Dulceology, it will also be a retail bakery. It will have seating where customers can eat cookies or slices of cakes, including Tres Leches, as well as drink coffees, lattes, and hot chocolates. They will also look to offer savory items like empanadas. Dulceology has its regular Alfajores, as well as a gluten-free version that they said is just as good.

The shop will also be open for private events such as birthday parties, bridal showers, and baby showers. Dulceology is planning to wholesale its baked goods to cafes, restaurants, and stores.

The Leivas will soon begin renovating the space to open up the layout, and to add their baking equipment. They are talking to local artists about murals for the interior.

Dulceology will be open every day but Sunday. They are still figuring out the hours that will best fit the needs of the community, but it will likely open at 8am most days. The Leivas are also planning on having a Sunday brunch menu, and offering baking and decorating classes.

House Plant Shop ‘Plantacea’ Coming to Federal Hill

Lisa Heckman has been in the restaurant business for many years, but now she is turning to a life-long hobby and passion for her next business. Heckman is opening house plant shop Plantacea in an approximately 700 sq. ft. retail space at 910 Light St. In recent years, the space was formerly an office and a boutique.

Heckman is happy to make a return to Federal Hill where she owned former restaurant Soigne at 554 E. Fort Ave. in the early 2000s. She later opened pizza shop Iggies in Mount Vernon before selling it 2014. Since signing her lease, she has enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and visiting her old stomping grounds and patronizing neighborhood businesses.

Heckman told SouthBMore.com that Federal Hill was the only place she looked when seeking out a storefront for Plantacea. She said she loves the energy in the neighborhood and the demographics which include a lot of empty nesters and young families. She thinks these two things make the new shop an ideal location for a plant shop.

“Cities are growing and green spaces are shrinking,” said Heckman. “Plants are great for purified air and lowering blood pressure.”

Heckman said that plant care is “like having a pet but less work.” She is hoping her shop will likely be a nice relaxing change of pace from the restaurant industry.

Heckman has spent recent weeks building shelving and making some small changes to the space that will soon be filled with about 300 to 400 plants. Plantacea will sell plants starting in the $15 to $25 range. Heckman is also looking to source many hard-to-find plants that are more than $100.

Heckman is hoping her selection of plants will be a draw for the neighborhood as well as for people from all around the region. “I hope to make a name for selling unusual things. Plant lovers will make the trip,” she said.

The shop will have a “prosperity wall” where shoppers can leave stems of plants and take stems of plants at no charge.

Plantacea will also sell terra cotta pots, pots made by Caroline Battle, fertilizers, soil by the pound, coco coir, and some tools. In the spring, Plantacea will sell items for balcony gardens.

Plantacea will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 11am to 7pm, though Heckman noted she might open earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. Tuesdays will be by appointment only.

Federal Hill-Based Business The codex club Wins Remington Storefront Challenge

The codex club, a Federal Hill-based business owned by Andrea Chen, will be opening a storefront at 2700 Remington Ave., Suite 1100 in Remington. The codex club was one of two winners of the Remington Storefront Challenge, which offered prime retail spaces in Remington to entrepreneurs and makers rent-free for up to two years.

The challenge was put on by The Greater Remington Improvement Association (GRIA) in partnership with Johns Hopkins University, Seawall, and Howard Bank. The winners were selected from more than 100 applicants by a community panel made up of residents, local business owners, and other community stakeholders.

The codex club sells locally-made clothing, home goods, stationery, and jewelry. Chen, who is a film actor and graphic designer, founded the store in 2015. She began selling goods online with a focus on greeting cards and printed clothing with original illustrations by her and other local artists out of her home in Federal Hill, and the company expanded from there. Chen has also taken on wholesale screen printing contracts.

Chen is from Texas and was living in New York City before moving to Baltimore. Chen didn’t know what to expect when she came to Baltimore, but was excited about the art and maker scene she discovered. In starting her business, she didn’t want to just sell her own products, she wanted to help support other small businesses in the Baltimore area.

Chen opened a pop-up store in Arundel Mills Mall last holiday season. While it was successful, she knew she wanted her business to be permanently based in Baltimore City. She was looking to open a storefront in Federal Hill, but turned her focus to Remington after winning the Storefront Challenge. Chen said she could still turn to South Baltimore for a second location and will be hosting a pop-up this Saturday and Sunday at Cross Street Market.

The codex club, which is taking over a former Pizza Boli’s location, worked with the Remington Storefront Challenge on improvements to the space. This included higher ceilings, an ADA-compliant dressing room, window displays, a showroom, and storage. A mural will also be added.

The codex club will host its grand opening in Remington on Saturday, September 7th from 10 to 11am. It will feature free ice cream from Little Baby’s, cupcakes from Charm City Cakes, and book signings of 111 Places in Baltimore That You Must Not Miss by local author Allison Robicelli.

The codex club will be open Monday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm.

“I’m excited to share the products by myself and the vendors you love, along with many more new items like clothing, home goods, and stationery,” said Chen in a press release. “We can’t wait to see all of our Remington neighbors, along with friends and new customers from all over the city. We hope our space will be an incubator and supporter of all Baltimore makers and artists.”

GRIA is thrilled to welcome The codex club to the neighborhood. Remington is home to so many awesome independent businesses and we are excited to have another woman-owned small business joining our community,” said Leah Irwin, president of GRIA, in a press release.

Annoula’s Kitchen Opens at Cross Street Market

SoBo Cafe and SoBo Market owner Anna Leventis opened her new concept Annoula’s Kitchen this month at the newly-renovated Cross Street Market. The Annoula’s stall is a fast-casual concept, but continues the theme of Leventis’ other restaurants by serving many scratch made items and local products.

Leventis’ gave it the name Annoula’s because Annoula is the nickname given to her by her Greek family members.

When Leventis heard Cross Street Market was going to get redeveloped, she knew she wanted to be a part of its future. “It’s going to be transformation and a hub for the neighborhood,” she said.

Not only is Leventis passionate about her three restaurants in Federal Hill but she is passionate about the Federal Hill dining scene as a whole and wants to see the neighborhood become more of a dining destination. She loves the communal aspect of Cross Street Market with the different vendors and common seating areas, and hopes people get different items from different stalls while visiting the market. She said the energy at the market, which now has 11 stalls open, had a great energy and was so much fun before the first Ravens preseason game.

Leventis worked with her SoBo Cafe chef Alex Thacker to design the menu at Annoula’s. Annoula’s has a focus on soups, salads, sandwiches, spreads, sides, breads, and pastries.

Annoula’s will have four daily soups. Thai Basil Tomato, Chicken & Stars with Chamomile, and Maryland Crab Soup will be the staples and there will be one rotating seasonal soup. Currently the seasonal soup is Corn Chowder.

Sandwiches at Annoula’s use bread from Lyon Bakery or on SoBo Cafe’s popular buttermilk biscuit. There is alas a gluten-free bread. Annoula’s chicken and short rib are slow roasted, the salmon is smoked in-house, and Leventis purchases a “high quality” black forest ham for slicing. Ingredients include house-made mayos and Annoula’s own hots that are similar to a giardiniera.

Sandwiches include the Breakfast Classic Biscuit features egg, a melty cheese blend, and roasted garlic mayo with the option for bacon; the Siracha Chicken Sandwiches with melty cheese blend, siracha mayo, house hots, on a toasted baguette; the Shortrib Melt with caramelized onions,  lettuce, black garlic mayo on a hoagie roll; a Vegan Chickpea Melt; multiple grilled cheeses; the Cross Street Grinder with ham, pepperoni, chicken, greens shred, house hots, and roasted garlic mayo a Smoked Salmon Hoagie with everything cream cheese, pickled onions, arugula, and herbs de province vinegarette; and the spice blended Garam Masala Chicken Salad Wrap.

Annoula’s has three salads with mixed greens including the Strawberry Arugula Summer with almonds, brie cheese, cucumbers, tomatoes, and smoked strawberry vinegerette. Salads can have cheese, chickpea salad, chicken salad, roasted chicken, and smoked salmon added.

Spreads include the everything cream cheese, french onion cheese spread, and a edamame hummus.

Sides are pasta salads, broccoli salad, and potato salad.

Annoula’s also offers a Sweet Potato, Kale, and Roasted Tomato Fritatta.

The baked goods will include baguettes, rolls, cookies, muffins, biscuits, and pies and cakes from Clement’s Pastry Shop.

Annoula’s has soft drinks along with beer, wine, and hard seltzer.

Annoula’s is currently open 11am-9pm Monday to Saturday and Sundays from 11am to 6pm. Leventis plans on opening at 9am on the weekends with an expanded brunch menu in the fall and will extend her closing time on Sundays. Annoula’s will soon offer a “snacky hour” happy hour with drink discounts and small plate specials.

Gangster Vegan Organics Opens at Cross Street Market

Gangster Vegan Organics opened its stall today at the newly-renovated Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. This is the fourth location for the 100% plant-based, organic, and free of gluten and soy restaurant.

Gangster Vegan was started by Vincent “Vinny Vegan” DePaul in Norristown, Pennsylvania. The Cross Street Market location is a franchise owned by the husband and wife duo of James and Taneea Yarborough. The Yarboroughs are also opening a brick-and-mortar location in Riverdale, Maryland.

The Yarboroughs, who live in Washington D.C., are big fans of Gangster Vegan and were customers when they would pass through Pennsylvania. They jumped at the chance to bring it to Maryland when they heard DePaul was looking to franchise. Taneea Yarborough is a school principal and James Yarborough is an accountant.

Taneea Yarborough’s family is from Baltimore and they knew the city was one of the first spots they were going to look to open a location. “We love the community and everything about Baltimore,” said James Yarborough, who noted the first &pizza location is in their Washington, D.C. neighborhood and that &pizza picking Federal Hill was a “a great sign.”

Everything at Gangster Vegan is made on-site from only nuts, seeds, fruits, and vegetables. All the ingredients are kept raw and are not cooked. Gangster Vegan offers smoothies, juices, wellness shots, salads, brown rice bowls, a broccoli burger, a beet burger, dessert pies, vegan cheesecakes, and super food balls.

The bread for Gangster Vegan’s burgers is made from dehydrated onion, flack seeds, and sunflower seeds; the taco meat is made of walnuts; and the cheese is made of nuts. Gangster Vegan also has a vegan tuna salad made of sunflower seeds. James Yarborough noted a poplar wellness shot is the Hangover which is made of lemon, ginger, apple cider vinegar, turmeric, and cayenne.

“It’s a very approachable menu. You can still be a foodie when you come to Gangster Vegan,” said James Yarborough.

Gangster Vegan will be open from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 7pm on Saturdays, and 8am to 6pm on Sundays. James Yarborough said the bowl and salad menu will begin each day at 1030am.

Gangster Vegan will have approximately seven employees including a manager.

Construction Begins on Three Large New Townhomes in Locust Point

Construction has started on three large new townhomes at 1441 Haubert St. in Locust Point.  The homes are replacing a row of 16 one-story garages located behind the Marine Corps League Detachment 565 that were recently demolished.

The site was purchased by Chester Street Associates, LLC and the homes will be built by West LLC Builder & Management Group.

Bill West of West LLC Builder & Management Group told SouthBMore.com construction is expected to take six months.

The brick-front, four-story homes will be 19 ft. wide and 65 ft. long. They will have four bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms.

The first floor will include a two-car front loading garage along Haubert St., an office/fourth bedroom, full bathroom, and a back patio. The second floor will have a kitchen, dining room, living room, and half bathroom and a deck; the third floor will have two bedrooms and two full bathrooms; and the fourth floor will have a bedroom, full bathroom, and wet bar area that leads out to a third-story deck that goes to a rooftop deck.

West said all the finishes will be very high-end. He said the homes will likely be priced in the mid-$700,000s.

West and Chester Street Associates also worked together on a large home on Webster St. in Federal Hill that sold for more than $1 million. West is also part of a team planning more than 40 townhomes in Carrollton Ridge.

A lot of new-construction townhomes have been added to Locust Point in the last couple of decades, including 100 new homes since 2014. Six additional townhomes have also been proposed for Cuba St.
