Smoke Closing Temporary Location at Cross Street Market, Steve’s Lunch to Replace It

Smoke, the BBQ stall that opened at Cross Street Market in a temporary “pop-up” location, will close after business on Saturday. Smoke will return when its permanent location at the market is complete in early 2019.

Cross Street Market is undergoing a redevelopment by Caves Valley Partners (CVP). More than half of the 31,800 sq. ft., block-long market is currently closed for construction which will be completed in phases.

Smoke is run by Hope Seidl, Keith Thompson, and Josh White. It also has a location in Cockeysville.

Stalls at Cross Street Market are being leased by Cana Development. Andy Weaver of Cana told SouthBMore.com the following in an email:

Josh White & Hope Seidl of Smoke have told me that the end of their pop-up, and leaving temporarily, is bittersweet, but they “are still full of excitement for the final market.” They’re planning to focus on their flagship location in Cockeysville for a while, as well as plan for their new stall at Cross Street Market.

Weaver said Smoke will be a great fixture in the revitalized market.

At its final stall, Smoke will have a window, called “Second-Hand Smoke,” to take late-night orders. It will also use Cross Street Market’s upcoming market-wide liquor license.

Steve’s Lunch, which has been temporarily closed during market construction since April 21st, will take Smoke’s location at the Cross Street Market. Steve’s opened at Cross Street Market in 1964 and is owned by John Nichols.

Nichols and his team will reopen at this new location in the next few weeks. This will be a temporary location for Steve’s until its permanent stall is built.

Phase 1 of the redeveloped Cross Street Market, which is a renovation of the east end of the market closest to Light St., is expected to open around August. The Charles St. side of the market remains open and will be renovated in Phase 3. Phase 2 will tackle the middle section of the market. The entire project is expected to be completed in 2019.
