Ruben’s Brings Its Crepes and Mexican Food Back to Federal Hill

After being gone for about four years, Ruben’s has returned to the same storefront it left at 1043 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. Ruben’s, which serves crepes, Mexican food, and sells its signature hot sauce, has made a name for itself at farmers’ markets in the area.

Ruben’s replaces Otto Turkish Cuisine. The space was also Grano Pasta Bar and Gyro Express since Ruben’s departure.

Ruben’s was started by Ruben Ramirez, who recently sold his mobile crepe business and now focuses on an internet radio venture geared toward the Latino community. The new Ruben’s in Federal Hill is led by Ruben Ramirez’s son Ruben Ramirez Jr. and nephew Jonathan Ramirez.

Ruben Ramirez Jr., who is 20 years old, began working with his father at the age of 12. He and Jonathan Ramirez, who is 22 years old, both worked at the original Federal Hill location growing up. Both are also graduates of Digital Harbor High School and grew up in South Baltimore.

Ruben Ramirez Jr. told SouthBMore.com that seeing the space for lease again sparked an interest in bringing back Ruben’s. They decided to take that opportunity and reopened Ruben’s in October offering late-night business on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

“We are excited to be back and we are ready to satisfy every customer,” said Ruben Ramirez Jr. “We are now here to stay.”

Ruben’s is currently open Thursdays from 10pm to 2am, and Fridays and Saturdays from 10pm to 3am.

Several other members from the Ramirez family help out at the restaurant and they have been preparing the restaurant for its grand opening in February. At that point Ruben’s will open daily for lunch and dinner while also continuing the late night schedule.

Ruben Ramirez Jr. said that late night business has been going great and that customers have recognized him and Jonathan Ramirez from their previous years at Ruben’s. He also noted that there are always plenty of familiar faces around the neighborhood that they know from growing up in the area and attending Digital Harbor High School.

Ruben’s serves Mexican crepes, sweet crepes, and savory crepes. Mexican dishes include quesadillas, tacos, and one-pound burritos. Customers can choose from chicken, steak, carnitas, chorizo, and veggie to fill the tortillas. Ruben’s also has its signature hot sauce that can be purchased by the bottle.

Ruben’s will partner with online apps on a delivery service.
