D.C. United Considering Playing at Camden Yards 

The D.C. United of Major League Soccer (MLS) will likely need a temporary home next season for several games and that could potentially include playing in Baltimore. Its new D.C. stadium, Audi Field, will be ready next summer, mid-way through the 2018 season. United’s former home, RFK Stadium, does not appear to be a likely location, according to Washington Post’s Soccer Insider Steven Goff.

Goff reports that Annapolis’ Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Capitol One Field at Maryland Stadium College Park, and Oriole Park at Camden Yards could be possibilities. From a recent article about the possibility of playing in Baltimore:

Baltimore: United has had conversations with the Orioles about playing at Camden Yards, which has never staged a soccer game. But those talks have not made much progress. M&T Bank Stadium, an occasional international soccer venue, will undergo further renovations during the NFL’s offseason.

The MLS schedules are expected to be finalized early next year.

Baltimore Remains in Contention for a World Cup Venue 

In other soccer news, Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium remains a potential venue in a North American joint bid for the 2026 World Cup. Baltimore is one of the 32 cities currently part of the bid which will likely result in 15 to 18 cities in Canada, Mexico, and the United States being selected, according to Goff.

Goff discussed Baltimore’s chances to host in a recent article:

The World Cup, by and large, is played in major metropolitan areas, but even though most big U.S. cities are part of the North American effort to stage the 2026 soccer tournament, bid leaders say they are bullish on playing in secondary markets.

Such talk raises the hopes for places such as Baltimore, Kansas City and Nashville.

“Is it natural to think that places like Los Angeles and New York have an edge? The answer is, of course,” said Sunil Gulati, outgoing president of the U.S. Soccer Federation who chairs the United Bid Committee’s board of directors. “But after two or three or four of those big cities, then it’s wide open.”

New Camden Yards MARC Station Could Break Ground Soon

Plans for a new MARC train station adjacent to Oriole Park at Camden Yards could break ground in 2018, according to Baltimore Business Journal. From a recent article:

The Maryland Stadium Authority approved Aecom as its architect last week. The Board of Public Works is slated to approve Barton Malow Co. as the construction manager for the $7.2 million project on Dec. 20.

The MARC Camden Line is popular for commuters to Washington, D.C., as well as University of Maryland Medical Center employees traveling between Baltimore and College Park.

Phil Hutson, associate vice president of capital projects and planning for Maryland Stadium Authority, said the design process will kickoff next week and hopefully be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2018. The project will likely break ground in the “fall range” of next year, he said.
