A new Burger King has opened in a part of the former CVS at the corner of Lombard St. and St. Paul St. in Downtown. Additional space remains available for lease.

Abbey Fundraising for a Texas Business 

Abbey Burger Bistro is hosting a fundraiser for two Hurricane Harvey causes. From its Facebook event:

Very excited to host a fundraiser for those devastated by Harvey at Abbey Burger Fells Point and Abbey Burger Bistro.

We will be donating to two places.

Half will go to locally owned 495 Chesapeake Eats in Rockport, Texas. Chesapeake Eats was located in Rockport, Texas which, as you know, was located in the eye of Hurricane Harvey.

The other half will go to KW Relief via KW Cares. 100% of the money goes to victims. They already have a command center and have helped 200+ families already.

Next Wednesday the Abbey Burger Bistro in Fells Point and Federal Hill will donate $4 out of every $6 Deep Eddy Drink that we serve.

Please stop by to help support the victims of Harvey, in particular KW Cares and the owners of Chesapeake Eats as they rebuild after the hurricane.

Post Office Construction Underway

Construction has started on the new 1,200 sq. ft. United States Postal Service (USPS) post office at 1200 S. Hanover St. The post office is relocating from a building at 1220 Race St. which will be demolished as part of the Stadium Square redevelopment project. The move is expected to be completed this fall.

New Hotel Coming to Long-Vacant Downtown Building

A new Candlewood Suites hotel is coming to 101 N. Charles St.,  a long-vacant property also known as the Jefferson Building. From Baltimore Business Journal:

Sunset, under the name 101 N. Charles Hospitality, bought the 56,939-square-foot property from RL BB-MD CSM LLC — the third time in 11 years that the building changed hands. Representatives from Sunset Hotel Group could not be reached for comment.

The Candlewood Suites was confirmed in a newsletter from Bethesda-based Metropolis Capital Advisors, which helped the owners secure a $10 million loan to pay for construction. Metropolis’ announcement states that the hotel should be open some time in 2018.

Royal Farms Fried Chicken Highlighted by Food & Wine

Food & Wine recently published an article titled, ’10 Gas Station Foods Across the Country That Are Worth the Detour,’ and Baltimore’s Royal Farms made the list. From the article:

Red Owl Analytics Acquired 

Federal Hill’s Red Owl Analytics, which is based at 1111 Light Street, has been acquired by Forcepoint, a unit of Raytheon. From Baltimore Business Journal:

RedOwl, which specializes in insider cyber threat detection, was founded in 2011 and is based in Federal Hill. The company is backed by nearly $30 million in funding and also has offices in San Francisco.

RedOwl CEO Guy Fillippeli said the sale to Austin, Texas-based Forcepoint comes after a “remarkable and exhilarating journey” for the five-year-old company, according to a memo posted on LinkedIn. Filippelli could not be reached for additional comment Monday afternoon.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

HomeSlyce Looks to Add Another Location

HomeSlyce Pizza Bar, which got its start on Light Street in South Baltimore in 2012, is looking to add its fifth location in Charles Village. From Baltimore Business Journal:

PJ’s Pub is officially closing its doors this week after 33 years of serving students of Johns Hopkins University and the Charles Village community.

Owner Jerry Smith is ready to retire, and HomeSlyce Pizza Bar is eying the property as a potential new location.

The pub has occupied the bottom floor of 3333 N. Charles St. since it opened in 1984. Overtime, it became a legendary hangout for generations of JHU students.

HomeSlyce owner Haluk Kantar told Baltimore Business Journal that “the deal isn’t done yet.”

Mounted Police Unit Coming to Hollins Market

Baltimore Police Department’s horses could soon make their home at the B&O Railroad Museum in Pigtown/Hollins Market. From The Baltimore Sun:

Officials from Baltimore and the B&O Railroad Museum announced a joint effort on Monday to raise $2.5 million in charitable donations to build a new stable for the nation’s oldest continuously operating police mounted unit.

The Baltimore Police Department’s mounted unit, founded in 1888, consists of seven horses that are deployed for crowd control and to community events throughout the year. It now operates out of a former car dealership downtown.

The plans announced Monday — which Mayor Catherine Pugh said were “a very long time coming” — propose a state-of-the-art stables and educational facility to be constructed on the museum’s 40-acre historic property in West Baltimore, just off S. Stricker Street and a short ride from the museum on the old rail tracks it still operates.
