1,200 Under Armour Volunteers Help Renovate Thomas Johnson and George Washington Schools

Thomas Johnson Elementary Middle School in Riverside/South Baltimore and George Washington Elementary School in Pigtown have a fresh new look thanks to 1,200 Under Armour volunteers. Last week was Under Armour’s “Week of WILL – a week of volunteerism and giving back to the city.” The initiative was in partnership with the Heart of America Foundation.

Thomas Johnson has a renovated gym with new tile floors, new glass backboard basketball hoops, a new scoreboard, painted walls with Thomas Johnson’s blue and yellow colors, and new signs. Renovations also include 15 painted classrooms, painted hallways, new Baltimore-inspired murals, replaced ceiling tiles, and landscaping improvements in the planters surrounding the building and in the school yard. Under Armour also donated 300 books for the library, sports equipment, prepared gifts for the students and staff, and spent time with the students.

SouthBMore.com took a tour with Thomas Johnson Principal James Dendinger, as well as Under Armour and Heart of America officials, last week. Dendinger was excited for the bright and improved new look of the school.

Similar improvements to the cafeteria, gymnasium, hallways, and classrooms took place at George Washington Elementary.

Under Armour provided the following stats from its Week of WILL:

  • 6,000 hours donated
  • 1,200 teammates volunteered
  • 5,000 backpacks donated to 30 neighborhoods/schools
  • 2 Schools Transformed (Thomas Johnson Elementary & George Washington Elementary)
  • 150 Paint Gallons
  • 1,000 perennials planted
  • 130+ Mulch Bags
  • 835 books donated
  • 950 students and teachers/admins benefiting from the transformed spaces

Earlier this year, Under Armour and Heart of America completed a similar project at James McHenry Elementary Middle School in Hollins Market.

Earlier this month, Under Armour launched its #WEWILL initiative in the city of Baltimore. A press release about the campaign said, “#WEWILL celebrates and honors Baltimore, the city that Under Armour is proud to call home. This campaign shines a light on the amazing people of Baltimore and Under Armour’s commitment to our communities.
