The popular escape room experience has hit Federal Hill as Lock N’ Key Escape Room is opening at 1118-B Light St. It will open in a 2,400 sq. ft. space that was formerly an office for Keller Williams.
Lock N’ Key is owned by a Baltimore-based husband and wife team that asked to remain anonymous while they complete work at their current jobs. The duo came up with the idea about eight months ago after reading an NPR article about escape rooms. They then started traveling around to other cities to check out these rooms and decided they wanted to start one here in Baltimore. The escape room concept fits with their work experience that includes education, team building, and security systems installation.
They chose the space in Federal Hill in part because of its great location for friends, families, and companies to visit. They also noted the space was pretty turn-key for their business with just cosmetic changes needed. The owners will be adding an awning to the exterior of the space and redesigning the large storefront window.
The owners described the Lock N’ Key experience as live, interactive, and incredibly focused on team building. Teams of four to eight people will go into a room and have to figure out puzzles so they can escape. Themes will include a zombie run, CIA secret agent, and bank heist.
Lock N’ Key will have three escape rooms that are approximately 400 sq. ft. each. Two rooms can also be used in conjunction for a head-to-head team competition.
The entire experience will last about an hour and a half with the actual challenges lasting an hour. The rooms will have countdown clocks and music to set the mood and the owners are looking to partner with local bars and restaurants to offer drink coupons so participating teams can socialize afterwards.
Lock N’ Key will be open Thursday through Sunday from 4pm to 10pm with about five sessions each night. Tickets, which must be purchased online in advance, will cost $28 per person with discount rates for area neighbors. Interested participants can sign up as a team or individually.
The owners are hoping to host couples nights as well as book local companies during the day for team building. “You can learn so much about a person – their strengths and weaknesses – during these experiences,” they said.
The owners are hoping to open in mid-April and are looking to hire three to four employees, including a general manager and game masters.
