EAT (Eggrolls and Tacos) Opens in Locust Point

EAT, which is an acronym for ‘eggrolls and tacos,’ opened last weekend at 1371 Andre St. in Locust Point. The new bar and restaurant takes over a space vacated by In Like Flynn Tavern.

Local hospitality veterans Doug Campbell, Michael Leeds, and Spike Owen are the owners of EAT.

Campbell and Leeds are co-owners of pizza and whiskey bar Barfly’s in Riverside. Leeds has been in the hospitality business for 30 years. During this time, he started and sold Sean Bolan’s Pub, which had a location in Federal Hill and is still open in Bel Air, and opened Barfly’s in 2011. Campbell, who recently retired from a 30-year teaching career, has worked at Barfly’s for the past 10 years and became a partner in recent years. Owen was a co-founder of Key Brewing and Austin Grill and has worked in the hospitality industry for many years.

Leeds said he’s had the concept for EAT in his head for years. Owen is friends with the building owner at 1371 Andre St. and approached Leeds and Campbell to see if they’d want to open something together. Leeds said the trio has been friends for more than 10 years.

EAT has a Mexican/Asian fusion menu. While the team will continue to roll out the menu in phases and refine the exact dishes over the next few months, Leeds said there will be a daily menu consisting of appetizers; orders of two tacos with Mexican rice and beans; egg rolls; and specials.

The menu over the weekend included appetizers such as grilled wings, quesadillas, chips with salsa and guacamole, and fried buttermilk chicken things. Taco options included chicken, steak, and tequila-lime shrimp. Specials included braised pork in a tangy tomatillo sauce.

Leeds said there will eventually be menu staples, as well as specials every week. EAT will also be adding more kid-friendly items.

The menu was created by Owen and Manny Martinez who runs the kitchen.

A sushi bar will also open within a month and by the spring EAT will add a soft-serve ice cream machine with a carryout window on Beason St.

The signature drink at EAT is its margarita using a housemade mix. There is a variety of tequilas available as well as EAT’s jalapeño-, vanilla-, and pineapple-infused tequilas. Leeds said a mix of pineapple and jalapeño has been a popular choice so far for patrons.

EAT also has Mexican and Asian beers on draft and in cans and bottles, as well as a selection of liquor and wine.

Currently, EAT is open every day at 4pm. It will soon open for lunch at 12pm on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The team is also thinking about doing breakfast at 9am on Saturdays and Sundays with English Premier League soccer playing on the televisions.

The interior of the former Irish bar was renovated to give it a “Mexican cantina” feel. It was painted, new tables were added, a sushi bar was installed, and a bar top was built using Mexican tiles. New signs were added to the exterior as well as a new red facade.

EAT is still working on filling out its staff for the kitchen and front of the house. Leeds noted they have already hired some teenagers from the neighborhood and are looking for additional employees, encouraging those in the area to apply.

After their first weekend, Leeds told SouthBMore.com, “We want to thank the neighborhood for the overwhelming support. We saw people coming in more than once.” He commented how the clientele was a mix of people he already knew from years of living and working in the community, as well as new people he met at EAT.

Diablo Doughnuts Relocating from Brooklyn to Overlea

Diablo Doughnuts is relocating from 3432 S. Hanover St. in Brooklyn to 7698 Belair Rd., Suite 101 at the Belair Beltway Plaza in Overlea. This will be Diablo’s last weekend open in Brooklyn.

Owner Michael Roslan told SouthBMore.com that the lease was up at 3432 S. Hanover St. and the partners on the building, which include The Smoking Swine and Dizzy Cow Pizzeria, have decided to go their own ways. Roslan said he would’ve loved to stay, but couldn’t afford the rent on the entire building.

The new space is less than two miles from the home of Michael Roslan and his wife Emily. They have a 15-month-old son and look forward to being able to see him more often with the business being so close to home. The Roslans are also excited about the available parking in the shopping center.

Suite 101 is a former tax business, so the Roslans had to build out an all-new kitchen and restaurant.

Michael Roslan said they hope to open in Overlea on February 8th.

At the Brooklyn location there was a commissary kitchen shared with all the other businesses at 3432 S. Hanover St. Michael Roslan said he is now looking forward to having their own dedicated kitchen. They will expand their menu by offering breakfast sandwiches, croissants, and fresh bread to go with the doughnuts, as well as Pfefferkorn Coffee. Emily Roslan is a trained pastry chef and has a degree in Food Science.

The new location will be mostly carryout and Diablo will continue to do catering orders. The Roslans also look to bring back some wholesaling to local coffee shops.

Diablo Doughnuts started in Fells Point in a shared space with Hot Tomatoes, moved to Federal Hill in 2018, and later relocated to the Brooklyn location in 2021.

Roslan said business was steady in Brooklyn, but slower than his Federal Hill location. He said he spoke with a lot of his customers that didn’t want to come into the city anymore because of crime. But, Roslan says he does not rule out another location in the city in the future.

Asian-Fusion Restaurant ‘Ekiben’ Opens in Riverside

Popular Asian-fusion restaurant Ekiben opened its third restaurant at 801 E. Fort Ave. in Riverside last week. The space was previously occupied by Bar Liquorice before it closed in 2019.

Ekiben is owned by Steve Chu and Ephrem Abebe who became friends while attending UMBC. The company got its start at local farmers markets, opened its first brick-and-mortar in Fells Point in 2016, and its second location in Hampden in 2020.

Chu told SouthBMore.com last January they chose the South Baltimore area because of Ekiben’s successful pop-ups here and noted how passionate the residents are about the community. Chu also goes to the gym in Federal Hill which he said will make it a convenient location.

A full renovation took place on the Fort Ave. building. Chu and Abebe removed the bar and added a bigger kitchen. There is a small amount of seating inside, but it will be mostly a carry-out restaurant. Ekiben will not be serving alcohol or using the liquor license that was previously in the building.

The menu is the same as the other two locations. Ekiben is popular for its steam buns, rice bowls, and sides. Options for buns and bowls include the Thai chicken meatballs, the Taiwanese curry fried chicken thighs, spicy peanut tofu, and the spicy pork. The crispy catfish and shrimp is available only as a bowl, and the slow-cooked lamb is available only as a steam bun. Sides include tempura broccoli, red beans and rice, tofu nuggets, and wood ear mushrooms.

Ekiben is open Monday to Thursday from 11am to 330pm and 430pm to 10pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, it is open from 11am to 330pm and 430pm to 11pm.

Ekiben has earned its share of media praise with a number of local dining awards: Travel + Leisure named it the best place to get a sandwich in Maryland, and Bon Appétit included Ekiben as one of its Best Restaurant Meals of 2021. Chu also won an episode of Guy’s Grocery Games on Food Network.

The restaurant additionally received local, national, and international coverage when a story of Chu and Abebe making a trip to Vermont to cook tempura broccoli for a terminally-ill customer came to light.
