Farm Store ‘Rooster + Hen’ Closes at Cross Street Market

Farm store Rooster + Hen has closed at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. Rooster + Hen, which relocated from Catonsville to Federal Hill, was the first tenant to occupy the 1,800 sq. ft. enclosed space at the southeast corner of the renovated market.

Rooster + Hen posted the following to its Facebook page last week:

Thank you for coming to workshops

And dinners

And classes

And grabbing your bags through the window.

Thank you for bringing in your dates, your kids, your friends, and your parents to shop.

Come see us before September 28th. We would love to see your faces and wish you well.

Rooster + Hen sold groceries and produce, as well as had an in-house bakery from Charlsie’s Bakehouse and an in-house florist from Baltimore Florist. Charlsie’s baked good can still be found at some local restaurants and at the Cross Street Farmers’ Market. Baltimore Florist still has a location Downtown.

The Cross Street Market leasing team of CANAdev provided the following statement: “We wish Rooster + Hen the best and look forward to announcing our plans for the space soon. We also have two new tenants joining the Market in the coming weeks.”

Additional vacant spaces at the market currently include the former Annoula’s, the former OnoPoké, and two stall spaces that have not had a tenant since the market reopened.

Longtime Bartender Taking Over Shotti’s Point

Kristie Bukowski, who has bartended for the last 17 years at both Shotti’s Point and Paul’s at 701 E. Fort Ave., will become the new owner of Shotti’s Point. Kristie Bukowski is buying the Riverside building and business with her husband Dan Bukowski, who runs karaoke nights at the bar.

The Bukowskis met when Dan Bukowski was living across the street from 701 E. Fort Ave. and was a customer of Kristie Bukowski at Paul’s. The couple continues to live in the same house today.

When owner Mike Shott decided to sell Shotti’s Point and focus on his two locations in Ocean City, where he lives full-time with his family, he offered the opportunity to the Bukowskis and they said yes.

“It’s exciting, it’s scary, it’s all the things. I’m looking forward to it,” said Kristie Bukowski. “I love the fact that I’m able to keep my job.”

Kristie Bukowski will continue bartending, which she said she loves.

“I’m not changing a thing about the restaurant. Why fix it if it ain’t broken?” said Kristie Bukowski. “The only thing that is changing is who signs the checks.”

The Bukowskis are currently working through the liquor license transfer process before the sale of the business closes.

Shotti’s Point will keep its same menu with poplar items such as its wings, Tsunami Tacos, and Rhino Chaser French fries. JD Hammett will continue to be the head chef.

The bar will continue to serve its beers, tequila drinks, and fresh-squeezed crushes.

The Bukowskis do plan on sprucing up the place a little bit. They already added new string lighting and flower pots to the outdoor patio.

Shotti’s Point is open everyday from 1130am to 2am for lunch, happy hour, dinner, and late night crowds.

Kristie Bukowski grew up in the neighborhood and loves that Shotti’s Point is a blend of old and new South Baltimore. “I love it, it makes it more fun,” she said.

Kristie Bukowski said business is starting to feel a lot more normal theses days and praised the neighborhood for supporting Shotti’s Point during the COVID-19 dining shutdowns.

“The whole neighborhood really turn out to support us,” she said. “There was a line at our walk-up window. It was great!”

“Kristie and Dan are lifers. I’m very excited for them and I’m very excited to keep it in the family,” said Shott.

Shott said he’s very proud of the business he built and that he “can’t thank the neighborhood enough” for the support Shotti’s Point has received from new customers and the old clientele from Paul’s alike.

Shott said he sees a lot of the Shotti’s Point regulars at his locations in Ocean City and loves the blending of both worlds.

South Baltimore Parks Eyed for Potential 2026 World Cup Fanfest

As Baltimore makes its bid to be one of the 10 United States host cities for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by North America, several parks in South Baltimore are being eyed as sites for a World Cup fan fest if Baltimore is chosen. These sites include South Point in Port Covington, Federal Hill Park, the Inner Harbor promenade, and Fort McHenry in Locust Point. Harbor Point in Fells Point is also a potential fan fest site.

Baltimore-Maryland 2026 is the group pushing for M&T Bank Stadium to be selected as one of the 10 American stadiums out of the 17  left in contention. Baltimore-Maryland 2026 President Terry Hasseltine said Baltimore is trying to offer the most consolidated footprint of the potential World Cup sites. This includes having the fan fest in walking distance to the stadium as well as having hotels, transportation, and entertainment options in close proximity to the stadium. Hasseltine said Baltimore is also one of the few places that can offer all of the soccer training sites within 30 minutes of the stadium.

A fan fest would have large television screens playing World Cup games from all of the 10 North American host cities. There would also be food vendors, beer vendors, and activation zones for sponsors.

Hassletine said it would be “Ravens Walk on steroids.”

Hasseltine highlighted the close proximity of the Inner Harbor and Federal Hill Park to M&T Bank Stadium, and said they both could be incorporated into the fan fest. He also said when the greenway trail network is completed along the Middle Branch in Port Covington and up Ridgley’s Cove towards M&T Bank Stadium, a walk from South Point to the stadium would only be three-fourth of a mile. Harbor Point is also eyed because it’s in walking distance to M&T Bank Stadium.

While Fort McHenry is the farthest potential fan fest site, about 2.6 miles from M&T Bank Stadium, Hasseltine said it’s a historic and iconic site that must be considered due its role in the War of 1812 and since its where the Star-Spangled Banner was written. Hasseltine said Fort McHenry was a great host for the Sailabration and Star-Spangled Spectacular.

Many parks throughout the city will be used for additional music and cultural food festivals if Baltimore is a host city.

While Baltimore is seen as an underdog with many national soccer writers, Hasseltine likes the bid Baltimore is putting forward. FIFA officials were in town on Sunday and Monday and took in the exciting Chiefs vs. Ravens Sunday Night Football game at M&T Bank Stadium.

“I think we presented the declaration that we are a can-do city. We are authentic and our stadium comes alive for big events,” he said.

Hasseltine said the stadium has about 10,000 hotel rooms in adjacent neighborhoods and another 10,000 within a half hour drive. And, as far as transportation, Hasseltine highlighted the stadium is right on I-95, right on the Light Rail, right on the MARC train, a short cab ride from Penn Station, less than 10 miles from Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, and near a water taxi system. He also noted the cruise ships could be incorporated into the World Cup festivities.

Baltimore-Maryland 2026 took FIFA officials to the top floor of the World Trade Center and were able to point out every location and site that could be used for the event.

“I don’t know that another city can put forward the portfolio we provide,” said Hasseltine.

New Orleans-Inspired Restaurant ‘Nola’ Taking Over the Former Ryleigh’s Space

Matthew Lasinski of the Alliance Restaurant Group and Ricardo Jones, owner of Sangria Patio Bar, are partnering on a New Orleans-inspired restaurant called Nola at 36 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. Nola replaces Ryleigh’s Oyster, which closed in May of last year.

Jones and Lasinski are friends with New Orleans Chef Donnie Stykes, who is now the personal chef of Michael B. Jordan, and took trips together to Louisiana to tour some of Stykes’ favorite spots and to develop a menu.

“It will be an authentic-as-you-can-get New Orleans restaurant with crossover staples like crab cakes and crushes,” said Lasinski.

The menu will have a raw bar; chargrilled oysters, which Lasinski fell in love with after trips to New Orleans; crawfish and seafood boils; gumbo; jambalaya; crawfish etoufee; po boys; Cajun-style catfish; and many other Creole-style dishes.

Francisco Lopez, who was once a chef at Ryleigh’s, will be the chef at Nola.

Jones and Lasinski worked with Aaron Joseph and Ezra Allen of Cane Collective on a New Orleans-style cocktail list. Drinks include a hurricane and Abita beers.

Nola will have live jazz bands during the week, as well as karaoke nights and DJs.

A full renovation of the space has been underway on the two-story building, and Lasinski and Jones hope to open Nola in the next few weeks. Lasinski said he delayed the start of construction a few times while trying to wait out the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nola will have two levels of indoor seating, as well as outdoor seating on its patio and in its parklet.

Nola will be open Monday to Friday from 4pm to 2am and Saturday and Sunday from 11am to 2am. Lasinski said he hopes to open for weekday lunch and brunch in the future once Nola gets in a good groove and can find the staff to fill the extra shifts.

Nola will join a flurry of new restaurants coming to the unit block of E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. No Way Rosé, Cross Street Public House, P.A.L.M., and two other yet-to-be-named concepts are coming soon and will join the recently-opened Watershed.

When asked if this was a new era for Cross St., Lasinski said, “I sure hope so. Some people have a less-than-positive impression of Cross St. As more people open and are doing new things, it will change the perception and bring in a wider breadth of customers.”

Digital Harbor High School Principal Dr. Taiisha Swinton-Buck Honored on ‘TODAY’ Show

This morning, Digital Harbor High School principal Dr. Taiisha Swinton-Buck was spotlighted on the popular NBC show TODAY. Dr. Swinton-Buck, who is in her third year at Digital Harbor, was named the Maryland Principal of the Year in 2021.

During the live segment at M&T Bank Stadium, host Al Roker surprised Dr. Swinton-Buck and Digital Harbor students by announcing the school will get free Dell laptops for every student at the school as well as free Comcast internet for a year. Comcast, which is the parent company of NBC, is also giving 1600 additional laptops to other school programs in Baltimore City.

From the article:

It’s only been three years since Taiisha Swinton-Buck took the helm at Baltimore’s Digital Harbor High School, but in that time, she’s devoted herself to bonding with students via TikTok routines, leading by example on campus and making record-setting impacts in attendance, grade averages and graduation rates.

The article also features quotes from students about Dr. Swinton-Buck:

“She always greets her students with a lot of love,” student Willian Aguirre told us.

Jaelyn Lyles said, “I feel like she has taken care of me like I’m actually her own daughter.”

And according to Dajuan Honeyblue, “Principal Swinton Buck is the best principal in the world. If you don’t like her, I don’t know what’s wrong with you!”

Shareef’s Pizza & Pasta Opens on Light Street

Shareef’s Pizza & Pasta has opened at 1538 Light St. in Federal Hill. Shareef’s takes over a retail space that was home to Pizza Palace before it closed in the spring.

Shareef’s is owned by Ronnie Faulcon, who also goes by Shareef which is the Muslim name he was given. Faulcon owns three food trucks, two Shareef’s House of Wraps locations, and The Grille by Shareef. He also owns a barber shop, and is under construction on a bed and breakfast in Southwest Baltimore. Faulcon is the cousin of Home Maid and Cloudy Doughnuts owner Derrick Faulcon.

Faulcon purchased the business at 1538 Light St. from the former owners of Pizza Palace. Faulcon is keeping the tradition of pizzas alive at the restaurant space with a menu that includes pizzas, pasta dishes, platters, and wraps.

Signature to Faulcon’s businesses is his rotisserie chicken with a custom spice mix, which is also available for purchase. Meats available for the wraps and platters are the rotisserie chicken, grilled shrimp, halal lamb, jumbo lump crab meat, sirloin steak, and salmon, as well as a vegetarian option with vegetables. Platters are served with yellow rice, and wraps have rice and Shareef’s special sauce inside a spinach, tomato basil, or whole wheat wrap.

Pasta dishes, which come with a side salad and garlic bread, include baked rigatoni; alfredo, which can be topped with shrimp or chicken; and turkey spaghetti.

Pizza options include a rotisserie chicken pizza, a jumbo lump crab pizza, a steak and blue cheese pizza, a halal pepperoni pizza, and a build-your-own option.

Shareef’s is open Tuesday to Thursday from 12pm to 9pm, and Friday and Saturday from 2pm to 12am. Dishes are available for carryout as well as dine-in.

Faulcon took on a full renovation of the space adding new floors, a reorganized ordering counter, new kitchen equipment, new paint and wall paper, and new tables.

Limoncello Featured on The Real Housewives of Potomac

Locust Point restaurant Limoncello was featured last week on Season 6, Episode 9 of The Real Housewives of Potomac (RHOP) on Bravo. The scene was filmed in March.

In the scene, cast member Mia Thornton came to Baltimore to visit her mother Veronica. The two enter Limoncello along Lawrence St. and are seated by General Manager Vincenzo Schiano.

The two order a caprese salad, tuna carpaccio, and the white clams from one of Limoncello’s servers. Both ordered limoncello to drink.

In a March interview with SouthBMore.com, Schiano called it a “super fun experience.” He said the restaurant became “like a movie set” with lighting, cameras, and a large crew of 16 or 17 people.

“The best part is the production crew liked it so much that they are interested in doing it in here again some time,” said Schiano.

The episode also featured shots of Federal Hill Park and the Inner Harbor.

Codetta was selected by Downtown Partnership of Baltimore as one of five black-owned businesses to receive grant funding to open a storefront in Downtown.

The segment also spotlighted the work done at the National Aquarium to continue caring for the animals during the pandemic. It additionally featured shots of Federal Hill Park, the Inner Harbor, The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and M&T Bank Stadium.

Sugar Boat Goods Opens in Federal Hill

Sugar Boat Goods has opened at 910 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. The first-floor retail space was formerly occupied by Plantacea before it relocated within Federal Hill.

Sugar Boat Goods is owned by retired child abuse lawyer and Locust Point resident Joyce Lombardi. Sugar Boat Goods sells “thoughtful real life goods and gifts” that are sustainable and made locally. Lombardi said all items sold at her store are from artists and crafters within 100 miles of Baltimore.

“I like ships, but not shipping,” said Lombardi.

Lombardi moved to Locust Point to be close to the water and named her store after the sugar boats that arrive at the Domino Sugar facility.

Items at Sugar Boat Goods include artist prints, vegan make-up, recycled glass necklaces, cutting boards, tabletop home goods, bar supplies, travel gear, recycled billboard tote bags, kids toys, baby clothes, vegan booties, and stuffed animals. Most of the items in the store will be new, but some will be upcycled.

“A lot of people became makers during the pandemic,” said Lombardi.

The shop has tables made by AR Woodworking that will be used for workshops where customers can hand-craft their own gifts.

Lombardi, who has been working on getting Sugar Boat Goods off the ground for about 10 months, has envisioned this concept for many years. She zeroed in on Federal Hill for her shop location and looks forward to adding to the growing retail options on Charles St.

Once Lombardi selected the storefront, she renovated the space by installing new floors, moving some walls, and painting.

Sugar Boat Goods is open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sundays from 11am to 4pm.
