Speed Cameras and a Commercial Vehicle Monitor Coming to South Baltimore Neighborhoods

South Baltimore is getting new speed cameras, as well as a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System, as part of a new Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System (ATVES) initiative by the Baltimore City Department of Transportation (DOT).

South Baltimore is getting speed camera monitoring systems on the 100 block of W. Ostend St. in South Baltimore/Sharp-Leadenhall and on 1200-1600 E. Fort Ave. in Locust Point beginning on August 13th. The speed cameras operate in city school zones Monday through Friday from 6am to 8pm all year long. Cars exceeding the speed limit by at least 12 miles per hour will be fined $40.

The intersection of Fort Ave. and Race St. in South Baltimore is getting a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring System to deter commercial truck traffic. Cameras are operational 24 hours a day. The fine for a Commercial Vehicle Height Monitoring system violation is a warning for the first offense, $125.00 for the second offense, and $250.00 for the third and/or subsequent offenses.

Baltimore’s first speed camera program was shut down due repeated errors in the system.
