Former Digital Harbor Student Gervonta Davis Wins Boxing Title

Former Digital Harbor High School student Gervonta “Tank” Davis became the IBF Junior Lightweight champion on Saturday night in Brooklyn, NY with a seventh round technical knockout of Jose Pedraza. This was the first loss (22-1) for the previous champion out of Puerto Rico. Davis is now 17-0 in his professional boxing career.

The fight appeared on Showtime and analysts had Davis ahead in the fight before the southpaw landed a crushing right hook on Pedraza that knocked him to the ground and led to the referee calling the fight.

Davis, who is 22 years old, is a native of Sandtown and trains at the Upton Boxing Center. As a top amateur boxer at the time, Davis dropped out of Digital Harbor to focus on his boxing career, but earned his GED after turning pro in 2013, according to The Baltimore Sun.

Floyd Mayweather has called Davis “the future of boxing.”
