Cheat Day Bar & Grill will open this Saturday at 737 Carroll St. in Pigtown at the former home of Pigtown Tavern, which recently closed, as well as SHAKERS and Jigg’s Tavern. The husband and wife duo of Stacy and Sharina Baker of Masako Group LLC, along with partner Edward Hill and chef Jamal Wilton, are teaming up on the new 2,400 sq. ft. restaurant.
Stacy Baker grew up nearby in Lexington Terrace and spent a lot of time in Pigtown where his family owned a small grocery store. The Bakers now live in Union Square and enjoy spending their time at bars and restaurants in Canton and Federal Hill, especially at Blue Agave. The Bakers have a background in the club and restaurant industry and wanted to bring a higher-end bar and restaurant to Pigtown.
As indicated by the name, Cheat Day will have many indulgent-type plates and drinks. The menu created by Wilton, who previously worked at Roy’s, includes small plates such as pineapple teriyaki and cherry-glazed wings, fish tacos, and lobster mac & cheese; larger plates such as lobster spaghetti, braised Thai chili short ribs, and a curry crab cake; and sandwiches such as jerk pulled pork, a burger, and a lamb cheese steak. Desserts include apple pie tacos and bread pudding. Stacy Baker said the menu will grow in the future.
Drinks include beers, wine, and sangria, as well as specialty drinks such as a Banana Banshee, Pigtown Mule, and Mango Martini. They will also sell pitchers of strawberry, mango, and traditional margaritas. They will have happy hour specials from 3pm to 7pm.
The team plans to add in draft beer lines by the summer, and Stacy Baker is hoping to start micobrewing in a currently unused first floor space in the next couple of years.
The first floor of Cheat Day features a bar and high-top tables, and the upstairs has a dining room and kitchen. The upstairs space will also be used for community meetings, karaoke, networking events, crab nights, sip and paint events, game nights, poetry readings, and comedy nights. Stacy Baker noted there will be no microphones as they are not zoned for live entertainment.
Stacy Baker said the space was pretty turn-key, but they made some small updates and will be adding a new sign out front. There will be six televisions at Cheat Day.
Cheat Day has hired 17 employees and will be open Wednesday, Thursday from 11am to 12am, Friday from 11am to 2am, and Saturday from 6pm to 2am. Stacy Baker said the goal is to eventually be open every day for lunch and dinner as the business grows.
When asked if Pigtown is a growing area for businesses he gave an emphatic “of course!” He continued, “I’m excited to give the neighborhood a great place with a nice product.”
