As always, we’ve had a lot of really, really good food in South Baltimore recently. Here’s a recap of some of our favorites.
Chicken and Waffles from Spoons
Spoons was voted SouthBMore’s Best Breakfast in 2015 and it wasn’t hard to see why during our last trip. We feasted on the Granola Berry Parfait, Homemade Over-sized Buttermilk Biscuit with Sausage Gravy, and the Chicken and Waffles Sandwich. Everything was so fresh and delicious, making it a great start to the day.
While chicken and waffle dishes are always popping up all over the place, the Spoons’ combo was one of the best we’ve had. We are already looking forward to ordering it again during our next trip.
Porketta Sandwich at Barracudas
Barracudas can be frustrating because I can never choose which sandwich to order (…I’m always tempted by the rest of the menu as well). I finally got around to trying the Porketta and it was outstanding. The slow-roasted pork, imported provolone, and arugula-garlic aioli all came together just right on a fresh hoagie roll.
Bacon, Egg and Cheese at Urban Deli
For me, you can’t beat a great bagel in the morning and newly-opened Urban Deli is bringing some really delicious ones to South Baltimore along with a menu of sandwiches, salads, coffee, and more. On its opening weekend I got the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on an everything bagel and it hit the spot. We’ll be back many times.
Hawaii Ahi Roll at Shoyou Sushi
Tuna topped with more tuna, yes please! Shoyou Sushi has so many good sushi rolls, but the Hawaii Ahi Roll might be my new favorite.
Ahi tuna plus seaweed salad on top of a spicy tuna roll, served with house sauce – so good!
Knockwurst at Das Bier Haus
German food has been missing from South Baltimore for a while and Das Bier Haus is bringing it strong. I’ve had chance to try the potato pancakes with apple sauce, giant soft pretzels, poutine, and more and it all has been delicious. I also recently tried the Knockwurst (pork and veal with garlic) on a bun with sauerkraut and house cut fries and that too was a great choice. I look forward to continuing to work my way down the menu and trying more.
Buffalo Pizza at Piaza
Buffalo chicken and pizza is always a great combo. The Buffalo Blue at Piaza features grilled chicken, blue cheese sauce, buffalo sauce, blue cheese crumbles, and fresh cilantro on Piaza’s Neopolitan-style crust that cooks in just minutes. It was an awesome mix of spicy and savory flavors. Good stuff!
Bao at Mi & Yu
I’m a big fan of the noodle bowls at Mi & Yu Noodle Bar and was excited to try the Bao (Chinese steam buns) on a recent trip. With the Bao, you can choose any of Mi & Yu’s proteins and top it with pickled vegetables and your choice of sriracha or umami aioli. We went with the buttermilk fried chicken with sriracha, and the braised short rib with miso glaze with umami. Both were outstanding.
A bowl or bao next time we go? We’ll cross that bridge when it comes.
