Patrick Dahlgren, who started Federal Hill restaurant Rowhouse more than 10 years ago, has taken the business back over after selling it a few years ago. Dahlgren focused his time away from Rowhouse running his other restaurant The Avenue Kitchen & Bar in Hampden. He is also a partner of a bar in Dewey Beach, DE.
Dahlgren, who purchased the building at 1400 Light St. in 2008 and performed a large renovation before opening Rowhouse, called it “his baby.” He said he knew he would likely return at some point and said “it’s good to be back.”
Dahlgren said he needed a break from the business after his best friend and fellow Rowhouse staff member Alex “Albo” Wroblewski was murdered in 2017 during a robbery in Locust Point. He described how difficult it was to be in a building where he spent so much time with Wroblewski.
Dahlgren and his contractors are currently spending Mondays and Tuesdays doing renovations to the space. One new addition will be a wall dedicated to Wroblewski. Dahlgren will also bring back the tradition of putting a picture of Wroblewski’s face on the Heavy Seas Loose Cannon beer tap.
Dahlgren also plans to revamp the wood storefront and improve the outdoor seating area, and said he’s interested in getting parklet dining on the street. A new sound system and television will be added inside, and a new mural will be completed on the second floor. The mural on the exterior wall of Rowhouse will be redone.
Dahlgren changed the name of the restaurant from The Rowhouse Bar & Grille to just Rowhouse.
Chef Audiel Viera, who’s been working at The Avenue for five years, is leading the kitchen at Rowhouse. While the menu will remain “new American” at Rowhouse, there will be some Mexican influences as Viera is originally from Mexico. Dahlgren said there will about 25 items on the menu including fresh fish, New York strip, and entrée specials every week.
The menu features tacos, sandwiches, salads, and starters such as street corn, wings, and truffle fries.
Brunch is a big focus for Rowhouse and Dahlgren said he’s going for a “Fort Lauderdale vibe.” Brunch is on Saturdays and Sundays and features a D.J. playing “background music.” Brunch items include crab benedict, steak and eggs, cream chipped beef, breakfast tacos, pancakes, and more.
Dahlgren’s stepfather is Heavy Seas Beer owner Hugh Sisson, so there will once again be a strong Heavy Seas presence on the beer taps. Rowhouse also offers cocktails with fresh ingredients, as well as wine.
Rowhouse is now open Tuesday to Sunday. It offers dinner during the week, and brunch and dinner on Saturdays and Sundays. Dahlgren said they are working towards being open seven days a week, and later adding weekday lunch.
The second floor of Rowhouse, which has a bar and additional dining room, can also be used for private parties or by sports fan clubs.
Dahlgren, who has lived in South Baltimore for many years, said “we want to be a destination restaurant, but serve the neighborhood first.”
