Main Street Jeweler Opens in Federal Hill

Longtime jeweler Tarek Ahmed has opened Main Street Jeweler at 1129 Light St. in Federal Hill. The storefront has been vacant in recent years.

Ahmed owned 5th Avenue Jewelers in Downtown for 23 years before closing prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also owned two other jewelry stores in the Baltimore area.

Ahmed said he was looking to open a new store in a safe location near Downtown. He closed the Downtown location due to issues with crime and theft. He is excited to now be in Federal Hill and be a part of the South Baltimore community.

Main Street Jeweler sells diamond jewelry, gold jewelry, silver jewelry, pearl jewelry, engagement rings, earrings, and necklaces. Brands at Main Street Jeweler include Tiffany and Pandora.

Jewelry repair is a big part of Ahmed’s business and he is able to fix high-end watches such as Rolex and Brighton. Main Street Jeweler also buys gold, silver, coins, diamonds, and watches from customers.

The store is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm.

Korean Fried Chicken Stall ‘The Chicken Lab’ Opens at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill

Korean fried chicken stall The Chicken Lab has opened at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. The Chicken Lab fills a space recently vacated by Rice Crook.

The Chicken Lab was launched by husband and wife Daehee Wi and Hye Jeon. Wi was a chef in South Korea before moving to Baltimore two years ago to help his brother launch restaurant Kong Pocha in Charles North. Jeon moved to America from South Korea 15 years ago and is a graphic designer.

When Wi was ready to open his own restaurant he focused in on Federal Hill where he saw a lack of Korean food. He messaged Cross Street Market on Instagram about his interest in getting a stall at the market and that led to the eventual signing of a lease.

The Chicken Lab specializes in breaded and double-fried Korean fried chicken. Jeon told SouthBMore.com the frying process makes the chicken less greasy and extra crispy. Jeon and Wi said chicken “is king” in South Korea.

Customers can order chicken combinations that include wings, drumsticks, or boneless chicken; a sauce; and a side. Sauces include original, cheesling, lemon butter, soy garlic, truffle parmesan, sweet ‘n’ chili, jalapeƱo garlic, and Call the Doctor. Sides include french fries and fried rice cake.

Wi is very excited to introduce the area to Gang-Jeong which is the most popular dish in his hometown of Incheon. With this dish, customers choose a meat (chicken, shrimp, or dumpling) and flavor which is then stir fried with a fried rice cake, vegetables, and pickled radish.

Other menu items include chicken rice bowls, Kimchi fried rice, chicken sandwiches, and Kimchi cheese fries.

Wi and Jeon are working with Cross Street Market management on getting a liquor license so they can sell Korean beers and soju cocktails. Wi said that chicken and beer is a classic combo in South Korea.

The Chicken Lab is open Tuesday to Thursday from 11am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sunday from 11am to 8pm.

7-Eleven Closes in Federal Hill

The 7-Eleven at 1111 Light Street in Federal Hill has closed. This 7-Eleven franchise opened in a 2,700 sq. ft. space at 1111 Light Street in 2012. It was previously at 1024 Light St. for many years prior to the move.

A sign on the front door reads:

This store is permanently closed. Thank you for your loyalty over the years! We hope to see you at our other location at 1000 S. Hanover Street, Baltimore, MD.

The building, which includes another retail space occupied by M&T Bank in addition to offices and apartments, is managed by WPM Real Estate Management. The company told SouthBMore.com they will re-lease the space and are “looking at convenience and neighborhood service categories.”

Along with the 7-Eleven at 1000 S. Hanover St., the South Baltimore Peninsula also has a 7-Eleven located at 1465 Key Hwy. in Locust Point.

South Baltimore Business Roundup

Popeye’s Coming to Downtown

Popeye’s is opening one of its fried chicken fast food restaurants at the Lockwood Place complex at 600 E. Pratt St. in Downtown/Inner Harbor. The retail space, which faces Market Pl., has been vacant in recent years after the closing of Blaze Pizza.

Popeye’s previously had a location at Southside Marketplace that has been closed for 10 years.

This new Popeye’s will open just a block from it’s chicken sandwich rival Chick-fil-A.

Silverman Thompson’s Name in the Baltimore Skyline

Law firm Silverman Thompson at 400 E. Pratt St. in Downtown/Inner Harbor now has its name in the Baltimore skyline. The law firm’s name is written on the top of its building fronting Pratt St. and on the western side of the building facing Commerce St.

The top of this building has been without a name since it read Baltimore Examiner many years ago.

Light Street Animal Hospital has a New Mural

Light Street Animal Hospital at 1601 Light St. refaced its building in recent years and has now added a mural to the side wall that faces Randall St. The mural says “Pickles Light Street Animal Hospital,” has portraits of different cats and dogs, and features South Baltimore landmarks like the Riverside Gazebo and the Domino Sugars sign.

Public Storage Has New Color Scheme

Public Storage has several storage facilities around South Baltimore, but its large building at 1415 Russell St. has a new paint job and color scheme. Its building has been painted off-white with darker orange panels.

Public Storage is currently under construction on a second facility in the immediate area on the 1500 block of Ridgely St.

Two Pigtown Businesses Swap Storefronts

Ripp’d Canvas and Chopping Block Barbershop in Pigtown are both owned by Domonic Carter. With the growth of tattooing at Ripp’d Canvas, Carter decided to move Ripp’d Canvas to Chopping Block’s larger space at 783 Washington Blvd. and Chopping Block to Ripp’d Canvas’ former space at 801 Washington Blvd.

801 Washington Blvd. also remains the home of Carter’s apparel company The Canvas Cartel.

Holiday Light Tours Available

Federal Hill-based business Rent-A-Tour has launched its Very Merry Motorcoach that tours Baltimore’s holiday lights and displays. The tour goes to the Christmas Village, Harbor East, Fells Point, Little Italy, Washington Monument, 34th Street in Hampden, and more.

Tickets are available on its website.

Southrn’ Spice Closes at Cross Street Market

Southrn’ Spice has closed at Cross Street Market after just a few months in Federal Hill. Southern’ Spice still has a food truck and catering business.

Owner and Chef Rex Murray told SouthBMore.com that he and the Cross Street Market management decided to mutually go separate ways.

Southern’ Spice was the second operator of the stall. It replaced Royal Farm Chicken which closed in March.

The closing of Southrn’ Spice is the latest shuffle at the revamped Cross Street Market which reopened in 2019 after renovations. Recent closures at Cross Street Market include Annoula’s Greek Kitchen, Ono PokĆ©, PhubsRice Crook, Rooster & Hen, Royal Farms Chicken, and now Southrn’ Spice.

New additions in recent months are Blowfish PokeWatershed, Atlas Fish Market, and Crepe Crazy. A Korean fried chicken concept called The Chicken Lab is close to opening at the former Rice Crook space.

New Crown Royal Commercial Filmed at The Outpost American Tavern in Federal Hill

Canadian whiskey company Crown Royal has a new “Kick Off With Crown Royal” series of commercials that has a very Baltimore feel to it. It stars former Ravens Hall of Fame Safety Ed Reed and was filmed inside The Outpost American Tavern in Federal Hill.

The 16-second version of the commercial is set entirely at The Outpost, and the 30-second and one-minute version of the spot also have shots from within The Outpost. Both longer versions of the commercial have additional shots of Baltimore.

At the end of each of the commercials, Reed does a cheers with Glenn Younes, who is the executive director of the Ed Reed Foundation and was a former sports talk show host on 105.7 The Fan.

Spirts Tavern in Upper Fells Point is also featured in the series with “Dave” the doorman set up outside.

The Alliance Restaurant Group, which owns The Outpost, told SouthBMore.com that “it was awesome to be featured in a national commercial.”

White Oak Hospitality’s Wayward opened a beer garden this fall at the corner of E. West St. and Patapsco St. in Federal Hill. The space is behind its bar at 1117 S. Charles St.

Trial By Fire Candle Co. Opens Production Space in Federal Hill

Trial By Fire Candle Co. opened an office and production space earlier this year at 1412 Light St. in Federal Hill. The first-floor space has been used as on office space in recent years.

Trial by Fire was started by Federal Hill resident Mike Hoffman in April 2020. Hoffman has been the singing piano player at Ropewalk Tavern and its other locations at the beach since 2014. Hoffman said a lot of people around the neighborhood know him as “Piano Mike.” Hoffman was playing piano full time between Ropewalk, weddings, casinos, and events before COVID-19.

Hoffman also attended the The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) and was a corporate chef for 10 years. Hoffman started making candles as a hobby and said being a chef helps create the scent combinations for the candles.

“It’s the closest thing to being a chef without making something edible,” he said.

When the pandemic hit, Hoffman began selling candles to raise money for Baltimore Bartender Relief. He would Venmo the profits to random bartenders around the area. The demand for his candles picked up and he want from pouring 50 to 100 candles at a time to 500 to 1,000 a time. This catapulted Hoffman’s candle-making business into his full-time job, although he does still play piano a couple times a month at Ropewalk.

Trial By Fire does a lot of wholesale with its biggest customers being Brightside Boutique and 2910 on The Square, as well as some businesses in Hoffman’s hometown of Philadelphia. The candles are also offered on Trial by Fire’s website.

Hoffman plans on hosting some pop-ups at its Federal Hill location around the holiday season. He also hopes to open a full-time retail shop in Federal Hill in the future when he can catch up on production and have the adequate staff.

Trial By Fire’s candles are 100 percent soy and carcinogen- and toxin-free. Hoffman said they have a long burn time with the 8-ounce candles lasting 50 to 60 hours and the 16-ounce candles lasting 80 to 100 hours. He said “the whole house will smell good” with his candles.

Hoffman makes earthy and masculine scents, and gives many of them comical names. Scents include Basic Witch, Fifty Shades of Flame, F*CKBOY REPELLENT, and Dirty Hippy. He expects All I Want for Christmas to be his top seller in the coming months.

Candles are $20 for an 8-ounce candle and $32 for a 16-ounce candle.

Hoffman uses the basement at 1412 Light St. for pouring the candles and the first floor for storage, display, and processing orders. In production, Hoffman mixes the fragrance oils to make the scents, adds them to the hot wax, and then pours the solution into the glass candle jars. He then labels the candles and boxes them up for shipping.

Trial by Fire has three employees who help Hoffman with production.

Blowfish Poke Opens at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill

Blowfish Poke has opened at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. It takes the place of Annoula’s Greek Kitchen, which never reopened after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Blowfish Poke is owned by Na Yi and Jennie Kwon. Yi formerly owned two Hunan Taste locations and started the Jasmine Smoothie World and Bubble Tea franchise.

Yi and Kwon took a trip to Hawaii to learn more about poke and Hawaiian food before launching Blowfish Poke, which now has three locations. Its Clarksville location at the Clarksville Commons food hall opened in 2019, and its Marriottsville location opened in April. The company also has two food trucks and will be opening a location in Washington, D.C.

Blowfish Poke’s Clarksville location won Best Food Hall Stall in the Baltimore Magazine Best Restaurant Readers Poll 2021 and has won other local awards in its brief history.

Yi said they were pursued by the leasing team at CANAdev to come to Cross Street Market.

Customers at Blowfish Poke can build their own poke bowl or get different Hawaiian specialties. Customers first choose a base of white rice, red rice, spring mix, or a combination. Next they choose a protein of tuna, salmon, crab salad, shrimp tempura, grilled chicken, or beef. Customers can add unlimited toppings such as cilantro, green onion, edamame, seaweed salad, avocado, and kimchi. Crisps such as sesame seeds and wasabi peas are added next, followed by a sauce which includes the options of Yum Yum, spicy mayo, spicy Korean, sriracha, soy sauce, eel sauce, and avocado lime.

Hawaiian entrees include the Loco Moco which is a beef patty with rice, gravy, and a sunny side egg; the Kalua pork with cabbage; and garlic shrimp. All entrees come with a choice of two sides with the options being macaroni salad, broccoli salad, or rice.

Additional sides available for purchase include Spam Musubi, fries, deviled avocado, and a shrimp tempura box.

Blowfish Poke also sells mochi donuts which are made from rice flour. Yi said these have surged in popularity at bakeries in New York City and Los Angeles. Blowfish Poke’s mochi donut flavors are matcha, mango, strawberry, purple ube, and chocolate.

Drinks include sodas and Hawaiian Sun.

Blowfish Poke is open everyday from 11am to 830pm.

Poke shop Ono Poke closed at the adjacent stall earlier this year and that stall remains vacant.

New Ownership for Harborplace “Hopefully by the End of the Year”

As Waterfront Partnership was celebrating the opening of phase one of the Rash Field redevelopment at the Inner Harbor, there was a sense of optimism for the Harborplace pavilions that have been stuck in receivership since June 2019. Waterfront Partnership President Laurie Schwartz told SouthBMore.com the ownership situation at the shopping pavilions will be resolved “hopefully by the end of year.” She added, “it’s coming.”

Ashkenazy Acquisition Corporation took over ownership of the Light Street and Pratt Street Pavilions at Harborplace in 2013 and began renovations in 2017. But, the renovations dragged on and tenants began to leave the complex in recent years. This included Banana Republic, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Philly Pretzel Factory, Urban Outfitters, Build-A-Bear, M&S Grille, Noodles & Company, Five Guys, and La Tasca.

Remaining tenants at Harborplace include Hooters, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., The Cheesecake Factory, Uno Chicago Grill, Tir Na Nog Irish Restaurant & Pub, It’s Sugar, Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls, and H&M.

New ownership for Harborplace would come at a time with increasing retail struggles for Pratt St. at the Inner Harbor. The Gallery at Harborplace mall will close at the end of the year as the complex has been losing tenants in recent years. Large retail tenants Jos. A Bank and Brio Tuscan Grille closed at 100 E. Pratt St. in recent years. A new retail pavilion is planned for 10 E. Pratt St., but has yet to break ground.

414 Light St. opened in 2019 and has added to the dining mix at the Inner Harbor. Utsuke Ramen opened in 2019 and vegan restaurants Double Zero and Liora both opened this fall.

Waterfront Partnership is also seeking a cafe partner for a space in the new pavilion at Rash Field.
