Baba’s Kitchen Turning its Dining Room into a Mediterranean Market

Baba’s Kitchen, which remains open for carry-out, will be transitioning its small dining room into a Mediterranean market. Baba’s Owner Farid Salloum said the transition is starting to take place and the market will open on September 10th.

Salloum said the dining room, which has not been open during COVID-19, was pretty busy all the time before the pandemic, but he’s trying to adjust to the new reality. He said he will miss having customers coming inside to eat Baba’s plates with their own bottle of wine and seeing people make new friends at the tables next to them, but this is a new concept he’s been thinking about for many years.

The same menu will remain for carry-out orders during and after the transition. Baba’s menu features platters, pitas, salads, sides, and entrees inspired by Middle Eastern, Greek, and Italian cuisine.

Salloum said carry-out has always been about 70 percent of Baba’s business. He noted that this part of his business has remained strong during the pandemic and he’s been able to keep the hours and shifts of his key personnel. Baba’s has been hurt, however, by the lack of catering opportunities.

Salloum was hoping to open a second restaurant, which he described as a Mediterranean version of Di Pasquale’s with its combination of a marketplace and restaurant, but he said he’s getting too old to run a second restaurant and he saw the pandemic as an opportunity to make this change at Baba’s. He also started a produce bag special in recent months that was popular with customers.

Customers will soon be able to pick up Baba’s popular items such as hummus, babaganoush, soups, salads, and frozen falafel. Salloum said Baba’s will be a testing ground to figure out what items might work well for larger distribution in the future.

Other items will include deli meats, cheeses, fresh breads, olives, eggs, cucumbers, and additional produce.

Salloum said the market concept will keep the kitchen busy with lots of additional prep work and he said this will lead to additional hours for employees and new hires. He hopes to hire individuals from the neighborhood to fill the new positions.

Baba’s hours will be Tuesday to Sunday from 1130am to 8pm.

Salloum hasn’t decided if he will reopen the outdoor seating at Baba’s.

Salloum said getting the market open will be the first phase and phase two will be preparing products for distribution and potentially getting a license to sell beer and wine. A potential third phase would include finding a bigger space in South Baltimore if the concept takes off.

Deaf-Owned Business ‘Crepe Crazy’ Coming to Cross Street Market

The Cross Street Market team of Caves Valley Partners and CANAdev announced today that deaf-owned business Crepe Crazy will be opening a stall in September. Crepe Crazy is under construction on a previously unoccupied stall in the east end of the market between Steve’s Lunch and Sobeachy Haitian Cuisine.

Crepe Crazy was started in 2007 by Owners Vladimir and Inna Giterman in Austin, Texas. Vladmir and Inna Giterman both immigrated to the United States in 1996 from the former Soviet Union; Vladimir is from Russia and Inna is from Ukraine.

The Gitermans vended at fairs and festivals, including SXSW, where they quickly earned popularity. They expanded to a food truck and, in 2014, opened their first brick-and-mortar location in Dripping Springs, Texas. The company continued to expand and now has three food trucks and a second restaurant in Austin.

Not only are the Gitermans and their children deaf, but so are most of their employees and contractors. Their hearing workers are also fluent in American Sign Language. The family supports the local deaf community by offering job opportunities, understanding the challenges deaf people often face to find work.

Franchisees Ruslan and Betsie Kulikov, who have been vending at festivals in Maryland since 2015, will open and operate the Crepe Crazy stall at Cross Street Market.

Their expansive menu will feature a variety of sweet and savory crepes, including breakfast, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, as well as a kids’ menu with crepes like “Lil’ Piggy” and “Nutty Buddy.” They’ll also offer paninis, salads, and seasonal soups, in addition to select French wines and mimosas.

The mid century modern-inspired stall design will feature “sleek lines” and “a warm yellow and orange color palette” along with white marble countertops.

Cross Street Market reopened last year after receiving an $8.5-million renovation by Caves Valley Partners. There will be a total of 23 food businesses in the market. There are currently two stalls available for lease.

Himalayan Bistro Closes in Federal Hill, Hopes to Reopen in Smaller Neighborhood Space

Himalayan Bistro has closed its Indian and Nepalese restaurant at 1030 Light St. in Federal Hill. Owner Danny Lamichhane told SouthBMore.com he is currently searching for a smaller space in the neighborhood to reopen his business.

Himalayan Bistro opened on Light St. in 2016 after spending 15 months building out its 3,600 sq. ft. restaurant in a former 7-Eleven space. Danny Lamichhane ran the restaurant along with his wife Kalpana Lamichhane.

The restaurant had a full Indian and Nepalese menu, as well as offered a lunch and dinner buffet and catering services.

CBD, Hemp, and Natural Products Store ‘Patorco’ Opens in Federal Hill

CBD, hemp, and natural products store Patorco opened in recent weeks at 1132 S. Charles St. in Federal Hill. Patorco took over a first-floor retail space that was the former home of Punch!.

Patorco is owned by Ellicott City native Haseeb Akhtar, who wanted to originally name the store Patapsco Organics Company, but shortened it to Patorco. He said he wanted to open the store to show “how plants can improve the human experience on a functional level.” Akhtar, who opened CBD shop Grass & Co. in the Adams Morgan neighborhood in Washington, D.C. in 2014, is excited to now open a shop in Baltimore.

Akhtar saw a listing for the Charles St. retail space online and performed a light cosmetic renovation after signing a lease.

Patorco sells American-grown hemp products including CBD. This is a a non-psychoactive cousin of THC in cannabis, which requires a medical card to purchase in Maryland. The shop also sells plant-based skincare products, soaps, and organic teas from around the world.

Patorco sells its own branded products. Akhtar works with American hemp growers and manufactures to create CBD products, and is trying to improve the effectiveness of CBD and make it more affordable. CBD is used to reduce inflammation, as well as for relaxation and reducing anxiety. “A lot of people don’t want that high of THC,” said Akhtar.

Akhtar also works with manufacturers and farmers to create non-CBD items like skin creams, lip scrubs, lip balms, soaps, and teas.

Akhtar said the Patorco store will be used to get feedback from customers, and then he will look to wholesale the products in the future. Akhtar will also sell Patorco products at Grass & Co. in the future.

Patorco also sells smoking devices and papers.

The shop is open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 10pm and Friday and Saturday from 12pm to 12am. The company has three employees.

From Councilman Eric Costello:

Update on Ice Queens Snowball Shopin Locust Point (1648 E Fort Ave)
BACKGROUND
There has been repeated and targeted harassment of the Ice Queens Snowball Shop, their staff, and their customers, some of which has been racially charged. The behavior is just disgusting and the people responsible should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. A non-comprehensive list of incidents to date include the following, among others:
• Grown man blowing cigarette smoke in a young lady’s face.
• Several neighbors call police on the Black Girls Bicycle, who ride once per week as a group, and patronized Ice Queens, for no apparent reason.
• Several facebook posts by one neighbor re: double parking, yet no complaints about the same for City Limits (which also happens to be a model neighborhood small business).
• Signs are ripped off the exterior wall on Andre St, on multiple occasions.
• Car drives eastbound on E Fort Ave, yells racial slurs at customers eating across the street, then throws coffee mug.
NEXT STEPS
Senate President Ferguson, Delegates Clippinger, Lierman, and Lewis, Major Conaway from the Southern District, and myself have all been in constant contact the past few days regarding this issue. Major Conway, Ross Seidman (from Senator Ferguson’s Office), and I just visited again today. Moving forward, there will be an increased police presence patrolling the area and police officers will be stopping in to say hello multiple times per day (known as business checks). We will all continue to support Ice Queens.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
Like all of us above, please CONTINUE to support Ice Queens Snowball Shop. Stop by and say hello to the owners, Dasia and Monique. The young ladies who work there with them are their family members, they are awesome, and they run a great small business. They deserve our support. Who doesn’t want a snowball when it’s 95 degrees in Baltimore? Exactly.
And if you see any of the similar illegal or racist behavior described above, please call 911 immediately. Feel free to email me the details at: eric.costello@baltimorecity.gov — only AFTER you have called 911.

Riverside Taphouse Opens on Light Street

Riverside Taphouse opened recently at 1542 Light St. in Riverside/South Baltimore. It was in a soft opening for the last two months doing carry-out, but its menu and bar has been at full operation in the last couple of weeks with some indoor and outdoor seating.

Riverside Taphouse is owned by former Social Pub General Manager Ryan Kehoe, an United States Navy veteran who has lived in South Baltimore for many years. He hired Justin Cox, who has worked with Kehoe as a manger at Social Pub, as the general manager for Riverside Taphouse; Chris Canty, who has been a bar manager at Wiley Gunter’s, Don’t Know, and Dock Street in Annapolis, as the beverage director; and Bobby Bassett, who put together the menu at Dock Street, as the chef.

Riverside Taphouse, like all restaurants in Baltimore, is currently limited to 25 percent capacity indoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is offering outdoor seating along Randall St.

The first floor dining room and bar has a max capacity of 85, so currently 21 patrons are allowed inside. Kehoe said the team is currently renovating the second floor dining room and bar of the building and hopes to have it open by November.

The team took on a full renovation of the first floor which includes renovated bathrooms, updated HVAC, new kitchen equipment, new floors, the removal of a vestibule by the front door, new bar equipment, a new draft system, new televisions, new high-top tables, and cosmetic improvements. A portion of the brick wall facing Randall St. was punched out and a new glass garage door has been installed. Kehoe said this “really brightens up the space.” An awning to provide shade for the increased outdoor dining was also added to the Randall St. facade.

Riverside Taphouse has agreed to an memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) to keep the garage door and windows closed after 9pm.

The former wood trim work on the facade has been removed. A new LED Riverside Taphouse sign has been installed and a new mural by Brian Propst of Mad Propst was added on the facade facing Randall St.

Riverside Taphouse is currently open Monday to Friday from 4pm to 11pm and Saturday from 10am to 11pm.

The menu at Riverside Taphouse is Bassett’s twist on bar food. All the sauces and dressings are homemade and the rolls are made from local bakers such as Dough Boy Fresh.

Appetizers include seven types of wings, Dough Boy Fresh pretzels with beer cheese, ahi tuna tacos, and a selection of egg rolls. Soups on the menu are chili and tomato.
