The former USPS South Station post office at 1220 Race St. has been demolished to make way for new development. The post office moved to a 1,200 sq. ft. space at 1200 S. Hanover St. on February 4th.
Construction crews began to take down the former post office this week. The former USPS site was acquired by developer Caves Valley Partners (CVP) in 2014 as part of its three-block, $300-million-plus Stadium Square development. The one-story building and parking lot will be demolished to make way for a new six-story, 67,000 sq. ft. office building with ground floor retail, and a five-story, approximately 315-unit apartment building on that block.
The block was also previously the home of several other businesses that already relocated from their former buildings, which have now been demolished. A new temporary parking lot is on the site and has been used for events by BMORE Around Town.
CVP Partner Arsh Mirmiran told SouthBMore.com the goal is to have both new buildings start construction this year. The apartment building parcel will be developed by Hanover Company, which built and runs Hanover Cross Street. CVP will be building and managing the new office building.
