After more than 45 years at Cross Street Market, Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood’s last day of business is today. Co-owner Kwang Lee told SouthBMore.com that while Nick’s is leaving the market, he is searching for a new home for the business in Federal Hill. Jae “Sunshine” Lee co-owns Nick’s.
Tomorrow, the Nick’s team will begin to break down the business and put equipment and fixtures into a storage facility. This includes kitchen equipment, walk-in coolers, refrigerators, keg boxes, televisions, and nautical-themed decorations and pictures. Kwang Lee and Jae Lee also own a seven-day beer/wine license that will stay with them, not Cross Street Market.
Kwang Lee told SouthBMore.com he was interested in a bar space available on Cross St., but feels the monthly rent is too high. Kwang Lee said he will continue his search and is only interested in spaces in Federal Hill.
Nick’s has 20 employees, including bartender Kimberly Travers who has worked at Nick’s for 21 years. She told SouthBMore.com in November that her and fellow longtime bartender Lisa Purisima would absolutely be on board for a new location.
Nick’s final days were first announced in November. This past weekend, patrons packed the bar for a last visit and to take pictures with employees.
Caves Valley Partners (CVP) is currently undertaking an $8-million renovation of the 31,800 sq. ft. Cross Street Market. Nick’s 3,800 sq. ft. space on the S. Charles St. side of the block-long market is the only section of the market currently open. Nick’s hoped to stay at Cross Street Market, but a Baltimore City Circuit Court judge ruled in October that Nick’s did not properly renew their lease which expired on May 31, 2018. Nick’s and CVP reached a settlement allowing Nick’s to stay in the space until January 11th.
CVP will begin to renovate the Nick’s space later this month and it will be leased to another restaurant operator.
The first renovated sections of Cross Street Market are expected to open in early 2019.
