Cross Street Market is Open
SouthBMore.com has been informed from a Cross Street Market vendor that many customers thought the market was closing on May 1st, which was the original date the redevelopment of the market was expected to begin.
The Cross Street Market is open and is expected to remain open throughout its upcoming redevelopment with Caves Valley Partners.
The Laundry Mutt Closes
The Laundry Mutt at 214 E. Fort Ave. in Federal Hill has closed. Its former building has been gutted and is undergoing a renovation.
Torrey Smith and Wife Cover Adoption Fees at BARCS
Former Ravens’ Wide Receiver and current Philadelphia Eagle Torrey Smith and his wife Chanel have decided to cover the adoption fee for all 46 animals featured in BARCS’ Pawject Runway. From BARCS Facebook Page:
Last night at the conclusion of the runway show, Torrey took to the mic to address the crowd. Each year he reminds us all what this glamorous and grand event is all about—raising money and awareness for Baltimore’s homeless, neglected and abused animals. It’s safe to say that Torrey’s spirited and full-of-heart conclusion to the show is always a crowd-favorite moment.
This year, Torrey surprised us all with a special announcement. He explained that before the show, he and his wife Chanel were discussing what more they could do for all the homeless animals they spent time with backstage. They wanted to make sure that every single one of them had an adoption application by the end of the night. Torrey and Chanel decided that they would cover the adoption fees for every single cat and dog at Pawject Runway—46 animals, wow!
The Smith family went above and beyond, making an extra donation on top of each animals’ adoption fees. It was the best finale we could ask for.
Thank you, Torrey and Chanel, for always looking out for Baltimore’s homeless dogs and cats and having such a big heart for our city.

A new Maryland Stadium Authority (MSA) study is set to begin to examine the future of the Baltimore Convention Center, including a potential renovation and new arena. From Baltimore Business Journal:
The MSA board gave the nod for the work to the local architectural firm Ayres Saint Gross, which will lead a team of experts from several U.S. cities to study four possibilities for the 1.225 million square foot facility: Whether the center should expand and be renovated, merged with a new version of the aged Royal Farms Arena, expanded with a new hotel component or all of the options put together, said Gary A. McGuigan, the vice president of the Stadium Authority.
The MSA board also voted to spend $25,000 to hire Clark Construction Group LLC of Bethesda as a construction manager for the convention center project and Crossroads Consulting under a $58,000 contract to review other facets such as the market, economic and business operations of a renovated and redeveloped convention center. A total of seven firms submitted proposals for the work, McGuigan said, and recommendations are expected by the end of the year.
For the second year in a row, Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye Whiskey will be the exclusive rye whiskey at Pimlico Race Course for Black-Eyed Susan Day on Friday, May 19, and Preakness Day on Saturday, May 20. The announcement comes right off the heels of last month’s opening of Sagamore Spirit’s state of the art, waterfront distillery in Port Covington. May 20 is also World Whiskey Day, in which fans celebrate their love of whiskey the third Saturday in May, each year across the globe.
“Preakness is Maryland’s greatest day, and we’re thrilled to support it with the Spirit of Sagamore,” said Brian Treacy, President of Sagamore Spirit. “It’s fitting that Preakness Saturday falls on World Whiskey Day this year. Maryland has a rich history of horse racing and distilling rye whiskey, and with the opening of our new distillery, we are proud to celebrate both during Preakness Weekend.”
Sagamore Spirit Straight Rye Whiskey will be available at all full bars in the Grandstand where guests can sip on refreshing Ginger and Rye. Corporate Village will feature music, lawn games, a photo booth and free Black Eyed Ryes and Maryland Mules made with Sagamore Spirit’s Straight Rye Whiskey. These cocktails will also be available for purchase at Turfside Terrace all weekend long.
Under Armour’s revenue grew 22 percent from $3.96 billion in 2015. This year it projects boosting sales by 11 percent to 12 percent to $5.4 billion.
In the first quarter, Under Armour’s first-quarter revenue rose 7 percent to $1.1 billion and in line with analysts’ estimates. During a conference call with analysts, CEO Kevin Plank reaffirmed Under Armour’s goal of getting to $10 billion and said the company is “going to play offense this year.”
“We’re definitely not going to stand still, and we certainly don’t like going backwards,” Plank said.
It remains unclear whether 21-year-old Under Armour will crack this year’s Fortune 500, a list in which Baltimore has not had a presence on since the sale of Constellation Energy Group in 2012. Burlington Stores was No. 500 last year with $5.1 billion in revenue and reported $5.6 billion for the most recent fiscal year.
KickStarter for Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Fest
Federal Hill Main Street is looking for community help to bring a second stage to the Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Fest on Sunday, June 4th. A KickStarter has been launched with the goal of raising $3,500. From the page:

The 16th Annual Federal Hill Jazz & Blues Festival will be held on Sunday June 4th from noon to 7pm! We have some great bands lined up, but would like to get TWICE as many and return our Festival to a 2 stage event!!
The costs for Federal Hill Main Street’s festivals has risen exponentially over the past few years. Did you know that these festivals cost us TENS of thousands of dollars every year! That’s right, these community driven events are between 20k and 40k EACH to produce. These costs include-
- Permitting, licensing & liability insurance
- City fees such as overtime police, EMTS’s & Fire Marshalls- plus, City equipment like stages, tents and bike racks.
- Rental equipment such as generators, tables, chairs, moonbounce, potties, dumpsters & trashcans
- Day of labor including sound tech’s, private security and clean up crew- plus supplies!
- Advertising, marketing & printing
- Band Fees & Beer!
Our only source of revenue for these events is the admission fee that we charge at the Spring Block Party and the sale of beer! We are a small nonprofit that works to strengthen and beautify our Federal Hill business district and we need your help!
