South Baltimore Crime Updates

Arrest Update from Baltimore Police Southern District Commander Brian Hance:

On 1/25/17 approximately 8:10 a.m., police responded to the 100 block of W. Lee St for a arm robbery. The suspects were described as three African American males (mid to late teens) armed with a knife. The suspects demanded the victim’s vehicle keys. Once the suspects took the keys, they ran to the victim’s vehicle and drove it away. Later during the day, Baltimore City Regional Auto Theft Task Force located the suspects inside the vehicle, and took them into custody. The suspects confessed to other robberies in the neighborhood.

I would like to thank the community members that reviewed their cameras. As a direct result of checking the cameras, video footage of the incident was provided to investigators.

A frequent questioned asked by the community. Are suspects from the community, or a near by community? The answer is, no.

Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood at the Cross Street Market Staying Open Past January

Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood, which was originally ordered by developer Caves Valley Partners (CVP) to close at the Cross Street Market by the end of January, will now remain open unless a decision is made by the District Court in favor of CVP’s termination of Nick’s lease. Nick’s currently has six and a half years left on its lease according to Co-owner Kwang Lee.

Nick’s Attorney Gary Maslan told SouthBMore.com that they have been in negotiations with the City and CVP and there is an agreement between the parties that CVP would not evict or lock out Nick’s at the end of January, and that Nick’s will continue to operate at the market, until a decision is made by the District Court of Maryland on the validity of lease. Maslan said he is confident Nick’s will prevail in this litigation.

The entire market is expected to close in April or May for 8 to 10 months of renovations. Lee said he’s ready to negotiate with CVP on a long-term deal. Cana Development is handling leasing and MacKenzie Commercial Real Estate will be the property manager of the redeveloped market.

Arsh Mirmiran of CVP offered no comment at this time.

Longtime Nick’s employee Kimberly Travers told SouthBMore.com that employees and patrons were in tears on Monday when finding out news that Nick’s would not close at the end of January. Lee said he is very relieved and can finally get some sleep.

Mirmiran said at the January Cross Street Market Advisory Committee meeting that the termination was due to health code violations.

In a formal letter to CVP, the Baltimore City Health Department previously stated that Nick’s had “at least 2 Critical Violations and 137 Good Retail Practice Violations.”

“They don’t care about the rest of the merchants at the market. The way Nick’s has operated the last eight years is not a tenant we want,” said Mirmiran at the meeting.

“These are just routine inspection reports,” said Maslan at the meeting. “They’ve never been cited with citations. They are minor violations that occur in any food service facility. Nick’s has almost $1 million invested into this business.”

Nick’s Co-Owner of nine years Jae “Sunshine” Lee spoke also spoke at the meeting. “These are little violations, and this is a really big place. We’ve never been shut down or fined,” he said. “We pay $10,000 a month in rent and the landlord (BPMC) is supposed to hire pest control, but they haven’t. We hired our own weekly pest control. We tried the best we could.”

Nick’s also owns a seven-day, 1 am beer/wine license which CVP hopes to purchase according to Mirmiran. CVP is hoping to get a market-wide liquor license for the project and CVP, the committee, and surrounding neighborhoods are working with Delegate Luke Clippinger on this request.

Kwang Lee showed SouthBMore.com the description of Good Retail Practice violations on an inspection report and noted that “every time the Health Department comes in, they find something” and that “it’s an education process.” Other vendors and restaurant owners who have spoken with SouthBMore.com have confirmed this.

Many in attendance at the Cross Street Market Advisory Committee meeting were there in support of Nick’s including bartenders, employees, the family of employees, and patrons of the business. Many in the community have also shown support for Nick’s on social media. There has also been an outpouring of support for Nick’s on social media, and a petition has been started to “help secure the future of the existing tenants at the Cross Street Market.” This petition has 718 supporters online and there is a large list of signatures at the Cross Street Market.

Nick’s has 21 employees and 70 family members who rely on the income according to Kwang Lee.

CVP is planning a $6.5 million renovation of the Cross Street Market. Cana Development is currently in discussions with existing tenants, which are currently on month-to-month leases, as well as future tenants. They expect the revamped market to have 25 to 30 full-time and pop-up vendors. They have a launched a new website at www.CrossStMarket.com with information on the project.

Caves Valley Partners Purchases Hanover Street Warehouse Near Port Covington

Caves Valley Partners (CVP) has added to its South Baltimore portfolio of real estate with the acquisition of a warehouse at 1800 S. Hanover St. This property was previously re-zoned for 39 new townhomes. CVP purchased the white brick warehouse, which was previously the home of trucking companies, a law office, and a gym studio, from Green Door Properties.

Arsh Mirmiran of CVP told SouthBMore.com that it was a strategic acquisition because of its location as a “gateway to South Baltimore” and its close proximity to Port Covington, which will undergo a 266-acre, multi-billion dollar redevelopment by Sagamore Development. Mirmiran said CVP has not yet decided if it will do the previously-proposed townhome project or go in a different direction at this point. The warehouse is surrounded to the south and west by Middleton & Meads.

Green Door received zoning approval in December 2015 for the townhome project. This project had been in the works since the mid-2000s. It was to include three rows of 16 ft. by 40 ft. townhomes, each with a garage and a parking pad. With the project, 15 homes would have faced Hanover St., 10 homes would have faced Clarkson St., and 14 homes in between these two rows would have faced a new courtyard.

The South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) has been working on improving the gateway at Hanover and Wells St. adjacent to this property. It supported the installation of traffic calming medians on the 1800 and 1700 blocks of S. Hanover St. and is working with the Neighborhood Design Center on a plan to add signage, light pole banners, and landscaping improvements along the gateway. The latter project will utilize Casino Impact Funds.

SBNA is also working with the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts (BOPA) on the PNC Transformative Art Prize in hopes of adding a sculpture to the median on the 1800 block of S. Hanover St. It is also working with the owner of 1845 S. Hanover St. on a mural for the side of Bumper Globe.

CVP has been very active in South Baltimore developing 1111 Light StreetRiverside Wharf, and the former M&T Bank on Cross St. in Federal Hill. It is also constructing Stadium Square, a $275 million mixed-use development with 300,000 sq. ft. of office space on three city blocks of Sharp-Leadenhall and South Baltimore, and is undertaking a $6.5 million redevelopment of the Cross Street Market.

Federal Hill Ace Hardware Begins 3,500+ sq. ft. Expansion

Federal Hill Ace Hardware at 1214 Light St. is expanding into the adjacent space at 1225 Light St. This space was formerly home of Warrior Emporium which recently closed and relocated to Lansdowne. Ace, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in Federal Hill, is co-owned by John Elliot who said the expansion is an effort to better serve the community.

The expansion will add about 3,500 to 4,000 sq. ft. to Ace making the store about 12,000 sq. ft. total. With this additional space, Elliot said Ace will be expanding its most popular sections including paint, where Ace will add a consultation area, and lawn and garden. It will also be adding more lumber, drywall, and sheets of plywood, plus a crafts section. Elliot said the new space will allow for them to have better displays and that he encourages customers to visit and let the Ace team know what products the store needs to carry.

Elliott believes the expanded selections and inventory will also be a benefit to some of the business clients in South Baltimore. “There’s a lot of development in South Baltimore and we want to be a better resource,” Elliot told SouthBMore.com.

Ace will also now offer additional parking, as it will no longer need to share its parking lot with Warrior.

Preliminary work has begun on the expansion which is expected to take a couple months. The grand opening is anticipated to happen in March or April. Elliot said they are cleaning up the floors and ceilings, and will be adding a pass-through to get from its current space to the new section. With more store frontage along Light St., Ace is working on a large new sign that takes advantage of this space. Elliot said it would be “more modern and clean” than the current awning they have now.

Ace currently employs 12 individuals and expects to make a few more hires. The store is managed by South Baltimore native David Evans and is co-owned by Gina Shaefer.

Ace is the current two-time winner of SouthBMore’s Best Store. Elliot says they try to achieve a great customer experience by greeting customers and providing the help they need. Federal Hill Ace Hardware is a co-op of Ace Hardware and the location has received the Pinnacle Award for being one of Ace’s top stores, according to Elliot.

Elliot is excited about the ten years anniversary, expansion, and how far the business has come. “We opened the store in 2007 during a bad economy and many people said we were crazy, but people in Baltimore are very loyal and it’s been a great experience.”

Great Plates of Late Around South Baltimore

Samos

Samos Greek Island Grill, the casual spinoff of Greektown favorite Samos Restaurant, opened its second location late last year at McHenry Row. Samos offers an array of fast-casual Greek favorites like gyros and pita wraps, spanikopita, spreads, salads, soups, and desserts.

Recently we got a large to-go order including a sliced gyro, a chicken pita wrap, the spicy feta spread with grilled pita wedges, and a cup of the Avgolemeno soup (a Greek lemon egg chicken soup). Everything was delicious, the prices were very reasonable, and the service was quick and friendly. Pro tip: keep a stash of the spicy feta dip in your fridge at all times.

Big Jim’s Deli

Big Jim’s is a classic deli where you are sure to run into someone you know from the neighborhood. With the upcoming renovation of the Cross Street Market, we certainly hope owner Anna Epsilantis and the team at Big Jim’s continue to be a part of the Federal Hill community for a long time.

On a recent trip we ordered a reuben with a Chesapeake Lager from Key Brewing, which is owned by South Baltimore residents. The reuben was just right with the corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss, and mustard, which I substituted for Russian dressing, melting together on Jewish rye bread. It hit the spot.

Southside Diner

Diners are a great place for comfort food and Southside Diner certainly fits that bill. On a recent trip, I ordered the open-faced turkey sandwich with gravy, a side of fries also topped with gravy, and apple sauce. It was hard to find the sandwich under all the gravy, which was savory and delicious, as was everything underneath. It was a very satisfying meal.

Wayward

Wayward brings an exciting new menu to the former C&R Pub with a focus on smoked meats and southern-inspired dishes. The menu has a lot of tempting options but we went with the grilled cornbread with pimento cheese and charred scallion, and the Americano sandwich with rosemary parmesan fries.

The cornbread was a great take on a BBQ classic, and the sandwich was an incredible amount of food with smoked brisket, cured ham, pork belly, beer mustard, house pickles, and gouda. It’s a beast and very good. You’ll likely have leftovers to enjoy the next day.

Das Bier Haus

From the pretzels, poutine, potato pancakes, and German entrées, Das Bier Haus serves so many great plates that go well with its German beers. Another great side is the sauerkraut balls, which are sauerkraut and mashed potatoes lightly fried and served with the sauce of your choice (there are many to choose from). They provide a great mix of sour and savory that goes well with a liter of Dunkel or Hefeweizen.

Cheat Day Bar & Grill Opeing this Weekend in Pigtown

Cheat Day Bar & Grill will open this Saturday at 737 Carroll St. in Pigtown at the former home of Pigtown Tavern, which recently closed, as well as SHAKERS and Jigg’s Tavern. The husband and wife duo of Stacy and Sharina Baker of Masako Group LLC, along with partner Edward Hill and chef Jamal Wilton, are teaming up on the new 2,400 sq. ft. restaurant.

Stacy Baker grew up nearby in Lexington Terrace and spent a lot of time in Pigtown where his family owned a small grocery store. The Bakers now live in Union Square and enjoy spending their time at bars and restaurants in Canton and Federal Hill, especially at Blue Agave. The Bakers have a background in the club and restaurant industry and wanted to bring a higher-end bar and restaurant to Pigtown.

As indicated by the name, Cheat Day will have many indulgent-type plates and drinks. The menu created by Wilton, who previously worked at Roy’s, includes small plates such as pineapple teriyaki and cherry-glazed wings, fish tacos, and lobster mac & cheese; larger plates such as lobster spaghetti, braised Thai chili short ribs, and a curry crab cake; and sandwiches such as jerk pulled pork, a burger, and a lamb cheese steak. Desserts include apple pie tacos and bread pudding. Stacy Baker said the menu will grow in the future.

Drinks include beers, wine, and sangria, as well as specialty drinks such as a Banana Banshee, Pigtown Mule, and Mango Martini. They will also sell pitchers of strawberry, mango, and traditional margaritas. They will have happy hour specials from 3pm to 7pm.

The team plans to add in draft beer lines by the summer, and Stacy Baker is hoping to start micobrewing in a currently unused first floor space in the next couple of years.

The first floor of Cheat Day features a bar and high-top tables, and the upstairs has a dining room and kitchen. The upstairs space will also be used for community meetings, karaoke, networking events, crab nights, sip and paint events, game nights, poetry readings, and comedy nights. Stacy Baker noted there will be no microphones as they are not zoned for live entertainment.

Stacy Baker said the space was pretty turn-key, but they made some small updates and will be adding a new sign out front. There will be six televisions at Cheat Day.

Cheat Day has hired 17 employees and will be open Wednesday, Thursday from 11am to 12am, Friday from 11am to 2am, and Saturday from 6pm to 2am. Stacy Baker said the goal is to eventually be open every day for lunch and dinner as the business grows.

When asked if Pigtown is a growing area for businesses he gave an emphatic “of course!” He continued, “I’m excited to give the neighborhood a great place with a nice product.”

Baltimore Police Commit to Additional South Baltimore Patrols Following Crime Spike

Councilman Eric Costello provided the following update in regards to an increase in robberies, car jackings, and auto thefts on the South Baltimore Peninsula after speaking with the Baltimore Police Department (BPD):

RE: Recent Crime Surge on South Baltimore Peninsula

SUMMARY: Today I spoke with Commissioner Davis to address the increase of brazen evening robberies and car jackings (as well as auto thefts). Our conversation was followed shortly after by a meeting I had with Major Hance of the Southern District, and his boss Chief Worley, of the Patrol Division.

BPD NEXT STEPS TO A SOLUTION: By tomorrow evening (Jan 17), there will be an additional and significant surge of officers patrolling the Peninsula on foot, during evening hours. This deployment will stay in place until the robberies stop and the suspects are caught.

HOW YOU CAN BE A PART OF THE SOLUTION: There are two critical ways you can be involved: 1) immediately dial 911 if you see anything suspicious; 2) file a Community Impact Statement; and 3) participate in a regularly scheduled community safety walk.

DIAL 911: If you see ANY suspicious behavior (ex., peeking in windows, checking door handles on houses and cars, following individuals closely), if you even have to think for a split second about whether or not a person’s personal safety or property are at risk, please dial 911 immediately.

COMMUNITY IMPACT STATEMENTS: After a defendant pleads guilty or is found guilty of a crime, a Judge sentences the defendant (whether they are an adult or juvenile). The Judge responsible for sentencing the defendant reads and considers Community Impact Statements before setting the sentence. A Community Impact Statement includes three things: 1) “brief” summary of the harm or trauma suffered by you and your community as a result of the crime; 2) a summary of the economic loss or damage suffered by you and your community as a result of the crime; and 3) a concise statement of what outcome that you and your community would like and the reasons to support this opinion.

Since much of the recent crime is believed to have been committed by juveniles, it is critical for community associations and surrounding neighbors to file a Community Impact Statement with the State’s Attorney’s Office. Court proceedings are closed to the public (based on State law), so the Community Impact Statement is the only way to let the Judge know how much of an impact this incident had on you, your family, and neighbors.

For more information on how to file a Community Impact Statement, including acquiring the case number, please contact Derrick Greene, at: dgreene@stattorney.org — he is the Southern District Community Liaison for the State’s Attorney’s Office. (Derrick D Greene)

COMMUNITY SAFETY WALKS: Participate in a regularly scheduled community safety walk. These walks are conducted monthly on the peninsula (and other places throughout the city) with the Baltimore Police Department. They are a great way to discuss recent crime activity, meet the officers who work in your community, and identify areas that need additional police and other city department resources. Contact your neighborhood association to learn when the next walk is scheduled or how you can start one.

BACKGROUND: There have been at least five incidents since Jan 5 of robberies or car jackings. I do not have other specific information on the incidents and some of the hours below may be slightly off. Please note that I do not plan to research these any further. If you have information related to any of these incidents that could be helpful to BPD, please call the Southern District Police Station at 410-396-4816. If you have specific questions related to any of the incidents below, please contact Officer Sheena Newman, at Sheena.Newman@baltimorepolice.org (Sheena Newman)

1. Jan 05 – evening – Unit block of E Hamburg St – robbery at gunpoint – 1 suspect arrested (male, juvenile), 1 suspect still at large
2. Jan 11 – ~830pm – 1200 block of Light St – robbery at gunpoint – 2 suspects, black, males
3. Jan 12 – ~830pm – 1200 block of Riverside – robbery at knifepoint – 6 suspects, juveniles
4. Jan 15 – ~300am – Unit block of E Henrietta St – robbery at gunpoint – 1 suspect, male, and additional suspect(s) in a blue Rav 4 with partial tag 0068
5. Jan 15 – ~1115pm – Unit block of E Wells St – car jacking (of a 2015 blue Toyota Corolla)
6. At least 4 auto-thefts in Locust Point (BPD’s Citywide Auto Theft Unit has an ongoing investigation into this)
