Das Bier Haus Team to Open Italian Carryout Restaurant at Former Federal Hill Carryout

Federal Hill Carryout closed at the end of last year and the new operators of the long-time carryout space at 1840 Light St. will come from right next door. Das Bier Haus owners Scott Bauer and Nathan McKinney will be taking over and opening an Italian carryout and delivery restaurant with a focus on pizza.

McKinney told SouthBMore.com that he and Bauer weren’t actively looking for another restaurant, but simply described this as “an opportunity” and a chance to bring “better quality food done the right way with people who care” to the neighborhood. He noted that they had been in negotiations “for a while” to get the deal done and that they have a good relationship with the landlord.

Bauer and McKinney are still in the beginning stages of planning for the restaurant and the restaurant name will not be revealed just yet. They are working with Das Bier Haus sous chef Mark Dunaway, who is the former chef of Regi’s American Bistro, to create the new menu and recipes.

Pizza using fresh dough will be a big focus and will be offered as pies, along with several options by the slice. It will offer a variety of Italian dishes including pastas. “Both of us (McKinney and Dunaway) are former food sales reps and we share the same idea of what that place could be,” said McKinney.

The new restaurant will offer carryout and delivery, as well as the option to dine in. McKinney said the price points will be affordable.

The team is in the process of cleaning it up and making cosmetics upgrades to the space. A new sign will be added and the exterior will undergo improvements.

Bauer and McKinney also plan to expand the dining room in the future, noting there is some extra storage space behind the current retail setup that allows for an expansion.

An opening date has not been decided yet, but McKinney told SouthBMore.com it should be open by the Spring. The exact hours also have not been determined but McKinney said they plan to take advantage of late night business. The team plans to reveal more plans at February’s South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) meeting.

With both Das Bier Haus and the new Italian restaurant right next door to each other, McKinney said both businesses should complement each other well. McKinney noted they will be two separate businesses, and they have no plans to expand Das Bier Haus’ liquor license into the new restaurant.

Also in the works for Bauer and McKinney is an expansion of Das Bier Haus to the second floor of its space. A renovation is currently underway that will allow for overflow dining and an event space. McKinney noted that business has been very strong and that the extra space is needed.

“We just celebrated our two-year anniversary and it’s been a long journey to get to this point,” said McKinney. “Das Bier Haus still hasn’t tapped its potential. More good things are coming.”

Federal Hill’s Stalking Horse Up for Auction, Currently Remains Open

Stalking Horse, along with its 7,386 sq. ft. building at 26-30 E. Cross St., will be offered at an Alta Realty Company auction on March 19th. Stalking Horse remains open and will continue to stay open if a sale is not made. The auction has a minimum reserve of $700,000.

Stalking Horse opened in 2007 and is owned by Jen Reda and Erica Knapp. The building is owned by Marc McFaul, who is also a partner in the Ropewalk brand of restaurants. Ropewalk has locations in Federal Hill, Fenwick Beach (DE), Ocean City (MD), and Chincoteague (VA), and will soon be opening locations in Bethany Beach (DE) and Long Beach Island (NJ). Ropewalk in Federal Hill is in its 23rd year and McFaul said it continues to be a popular place.

McFaul said the team is putting Stalking Horse on the market to “see what happens.”

“If it doesn’t sell, it doesn’t sell,” said McFaul. “We’ll stay open – the business is paying for itself and going along fine.”

He said the team would also be willing to sell just the business for around $650,000.

McFaul said the reason for the potential sale is to put more focus on its Ropewalk “family-friendly beach restaurants,” which he said are doing very well.

“We are getting older and we like the beach thing,” said McFaul. “All of our new places have playgrounds. We’ve done more food at Stalking Horse, but it has proven to be more of a nightlife place and that’s not the direction we are going.”

McFaul said that they will not sell Stalking Horse to just anyone. “We want something good in there and we don’t have to sell,” he said. “Whatever opens will have an impact on our business down the street.”

Stalking Horse includes three finished floors, six bars with up to 16 beer taps, a kitchen with a pizza oven, 22 televisions, and a BD7 liquor license that does not have a food requirement. The listing highlights Stalking Horse’s location across from Cross Street Market and the market’s upcoming renovation, and its close proximity to the Inner Harbor, stadiums, and public transportation stops.

McFaul said that interest has already been high since news of the auction went public.

Stalking Horse’s first floor was rebranded as Whiskey Hill in late 2016, but the entire space changed back to Stalking Horse in 2017. McFaul said last year that the name change caused some confusion and a slump in business.

Stalking Horse joins now-closed Boiler Room as Cross St. bar/restaurants available at auction. Federal Hill’s Regi’s American Bistro is also listed for sale, but remains open. Metropolitan, also in Federal Hill, recently closed and the former space will likely be offered for sale.

Pure Life Wellness to Open Medical Cannabis Dispensary on Cross Street in Federal Hill

Medical cannabis (marijuana) dispensary Pure Life Wellness will open in the coming weeks at 35 E. Cross St. in Federal Hill. The 4,5000 sq. ft. building is located across the street from Cross Street Market and was the former home to tenants including a tanning salon, a yoga studio, and a campaign office for Senator Chris Van Hollen.

Pure Life is owned by sisters-in-law Jaclyn and Michele Dolway, whose husbands are the owners of MaGerks Pub, which is located just across the street. Jaclyn Dolway is a Locust Point resident and Michele Dolway resides in Pennsylvania. Pure Life’s General Manager is Carly Boucher.

Jaclyn Dolway told SouthBMore.com that she was attracted to this business after learning about Women Grow, which looks to empower women to lead the cannabis industry. The idea to open Pure Life began to move forward in 2015.

The Dolways are finishing up a complete renovation at the location which features a 1,500 sq. ft. retail space with tile floors, reclaimed wood furniture and accents, local artwork, and plants. Jaclyn Dolway said she wants it to have a “calming and comfortable vibe.” The second and third floors will include a secured metal room to store the cannabis, offices, and a wellness room, which will be used for activities such as yoga.

The space will only get to be seen by Maryland residents with a Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission (MMCC) ID card, which must be shown to enter Pure Life. A card is obtained after registering with MMCC and obtaining a written certification from a provider registered with MMCC. Qualifying medical conditions include cachexia, anorexia, wasting syndrome, severe pain, severe nausea, seizures, severe or persistent muscle spasms, glaucoma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and chronic pain. Pure Life will hold patient signup events to assist with this process. Jaclyn Dolway noted that this is not for everyone and only for patients showing medical records of these conditions.

Jaclyn Dolway noted that the potential for future recreational cannabis use in Maryland is not in Pure Life’s business plan.

Pure Life will be open Monday through Friday from 10am to 8pm, Saturdays from 11am to 6pm, and Sundays from 11am to 4pm. An armed security guard will be on the premises at all times Pure Life is open, and will take sweeps of the surrounding area to make sure unauthorized individuals do not try to enter the building and that there is no loitering. Jaclyn Dolway noted that the guard will be in plain clothes and will not be an “intimidating presence.” Security is provided by an outside company that is registered with MMCC.

Pure Life has 36 security cameras, six of which face the outside of the building. The security system has more than 30 days of storage.

Pure Life has 15 employees who will assist patients.

Patients will have the opportunity of purchase medical cannabis as flowers, which can be smoked or ingested through vapor; concentrates, which are topical; and tinctures, which are extracts taken orally with droppers.

Jaclyn Dolway told SouthBMore.com that marketing will be through word of mouth and its patient-focused approach and educational events. There are currently more than 18,000 MMCC card holders in Maryland.

Pure Life is one of the first dispensaries in Maryland to receive its final license from MMCC.

No Baltimore City zoning variances were needed to open Pure Life at its Cross St. location. Pure Life met with the South Baltimore Neighborhood Association (SBNA) last year and both SBNA and Pure Life described the meeting as “positive.”

“We live in the neighborhood and our family already runs a good neighborhood business,” said Jaclyn Dolway.

When asked why Cross St. for the location of Pure Life, Jaclyn Dolway replied, “why not!” She described it as a great business district with a lot of foot traffic. She also said that fellow business owners have been very supportive and that she looks forward to the redevelopment of the Cross Street Market.

Maryland’s District 46, which includes South and Southeast Baltimore, is eligible for three dispensaries under State law. Another dispensary is currently in the works for Federal Hill.
