Tall Fence Removed Between Little Havana’s Outdoor Patio and Inner Harbor

A tall chain link fence that stood up against Little Havana’s outdoor patio for the past 25 years was removed this week. The team at Little Havana came to an agreement with HarborView, which owns the property where the fence was attached, to get rid of the fence and beautify the area.

The fence was visible from Little Havana when looking out to the Inner Harbor.

“We are very excited to have the fence gone. It looks so incredible now,” said Little Havana Co-Owner Marc Gentile. “It’s like we had a tint removed, the view is so much clearer now. We are thankful for David Swirnow and the team at HarborView.”

With the fence now removed, Gentile said the next step is clearing the weeds and trash that were stuck between the patio and fence. The final step will be repairing the paneling against the deck support system and adding planters to the ground level.

Gentile said business has been good at Little Havana over the past year other than when the COVID-19 Omicron variant was surging. He’s hopeful for a good spring at the restaurant with low COVID-19 numbers in the area.

Little Havana will be celebrating its 25th anniversary on May 7th with a tent in its adjacent parking lot. This will happen a couple of days after its annual Cinco de Mayo party.

On April 16, 2022, at approximately 10:59 a.m., Southern District patrol officers responded to the 100 block of West Hamburg Street, for a report of a shooting.

Once there, officers located a 53-year-old male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to an area hospital where he is expected to survive.

Southern District Shooting Investigation

On April 15, 2022 at approximately 6:32 p.m., officers responded to the 800 block of W. Cross Street for a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a 17-year-old male who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his lower right arm.

The victim was transported to an area hospital and is being treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Southern District shooting detectives are investigating this incident.

Bull Head Pit Beef Closes at Cross Street Market, New Tenants Close to Deals

Bull Head Pit Beef has permanently closed its stall at Cross Street Market. It opened in July of 2020.

Bull Head owner Larry Jackson issued the following statement to SouthBMore.com in an email:

We are disappointed to have to close our Cross Street location. We opened four months into the pandemic shutdown and we knew that it was going to be an uphill battle. Cross Street Market has undergone a beautiful renovation and in a normal environment where people feel free to wander in and out of indoor spaces it will most likely be a huge success. In the world that we live in now it is a little tougher to get noticed. In a walking community like Fed Hill businesses depend on street visibility. At this point only three of the tenants inside the market have any signage on the outside of the building.  We were a new brand to the market and found it difficult to get consistent traction. We wish the other tenants luck. We look forward to the future opportunities and growing our location in Columbia and our food truck business.

Caves Valley Partners (CVP) holds the management agreement with Baltimore Public Markets Corporation and is the controlling partner on the project. CVP Partner Arsh Mirmiran told SouthBMore.com that his team is trying to wrap a deal with a group of local radio stations that would build a studio in one of the stalls and an adjacent stage. The company would shows out of one of the stalls and bring musical guests to the market. He said a deal for an Italian concept is also getting close.

In the past year and a half, vendors Annoula’s Greek Kitchen, Ono Poké, Phubs, Rice Crook, Rooster & Hen, Royal Farms Chicken, Southrn’ Spice, Cans Filling Station, Bull Head Pit Beef, and Old Line Cocktail & Wine Bar have closed at Cross Street Market. New concepts added in that period of time include DMV Empanadas, The Chicken Lab, Blowfish Poke, Watershed, Atlas Fish Market, and Crepe Crazy.

Atlas Restaurant Group took over operations and marketing of the market in February.

‘DMV Empanadas’ Coming to Cross Street Market

Baltimore farmers’ market-staple DMV Empanadas is opening its first brick-and-mortar location in the city at Cross Street Market in Federal Hill. DMV Empanadas takes over a space Ono Poké vacated last year.

Bolivia natives Marco and Nacho Amaraz started DMV Empanadas six years ago. Marco Amaraz had a house cleaning service and said he was tired of being around all the chemicals, so he decided to use his mother’s chicken empanada recipe and set up at local farmers’ markets around the Washington, D.C. area.

DMV Empanadas opened its first brick-and-mortar location three years ago in Gaithersburg. In addition to the location in Cross Street Market, DMV Empanadas is currently working on opening a location in Rockville and one in a food court in Silver Spring.

Baltimoreans may be familiar with DMV Empanadas from the 32nd Street Farmers Market, Fell’s Point Farmers Market, and Baltimore Farmers’ Market.

“We have a lot of fans over here, but not a physical location,” said Marco Amaraz. “When we saw this opportunity [at Cross Street Market], we grabbed it.”

DMV Empanadas offers 23 different flavors of empanadas that are a mix of Bolivian, American, and Maryland flavors. Fillings include chicken, beef, BBQ pork, spicy pork, spinach and cheese, Old Bay shrimp, cheeseburger, and more.

Each empanada comes with regular or spicy sauce.

Marco Amaraz said the Gaithersburg location serves as the commercial kitchen where they make the dough, fillings, and empanadas before they are sent out to farmers’ markets and other locations. He noted making the dough is a three-day process.

The Amarazs use a custom-made empanada machine from an Argentinian company that imprints the name of the filling on the empanada dough.

DMV Empanadas now makes 10,000 empanadas a week and hopes to up that to 15,000 by the summer.

At Cross Street Market, the empanadas will be reheated and served.

Most empanadas are $4. Customers can save $2.50 if they order six or $5 if they order a dozen.

Along with empanadas, DMV Empanadas will serve bowls that include two empanadas and sauce on top of salad or rice; churro donuts; tres leches; and rice pudding.

Drinks will include Mexican soda Jarritos, house-made lemonade, and juices.

DMV Empanadas also offers catering.

Marco Amaraz said they hope to open in the next two weeks as they get through final inspections. DMV Empanadas will likely be open Tuesday to Sunday from 11am to 8pm.
