Light Street Cycles Closing in Federal Hill

After 28 years in Federal Hill, Light Street Cycles will be closing its 2,000 sq. ft. space at 1124 Light St. Owner Penny Troutner told SouthBMore.com that she does not have a final day of business scheduled yet as she is in the process of figuring out what’s next for her business. Light Street Cycles sells bicycles and accessories, as well as repairs bicycles and operates a bike tour business.

“It’s been a rough year and they are selling my building,” said Troutner. “Competition is tough. Online sales of almost everything is going up, and the rain has been so frequent that it has rained out several events. The Orioles being in a rebuilding phase has also hurt as Camden Yards didn’t attract the same numbers this year which had a depressing impact on the neighborhood.”

Troutner is looking at new spaces for her business and wants to focus on bike tours in the future. Light Street Cycles provides the bikes for these events.

“It’s very satisfying to take people out and show them a part of the city they haven’t seen,” said Troutner. “It’s amazing how little people from Maryland and D.C. know about Baltimore. Sometimes they don’t start out with the best impression.” She noted that participants’ opinions of Baltimore is often much more positive after a tour.

Troutner’s 10- to 12-mile tours go outside of the Inner Harbor to show riders the different neighborhoods. She said it really opens people’s eyes to see how quickly it changes from one neighborhood to the next in Baltimore. “It’s not uncommon to comment on how friendly people are,” said Troutner.

Troutner wants her business to be located near the tourist attractions such as the Inner Harbor, Downtown hotels, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and the Convention Center as visitor to the city drive a lot of business to the bike tours. Troutner likes the convenience of Federal Hill and loves bringing business from her tours into the neighborhood.

Depending on what size space Troutner finds and can afford will determine if she still offers repair services and sells bike accessories. She said she doesn’t mind Light Street Cycles being down for a few months in the winter because it’s the slow time of year for the business.

Troutner says that bike repairs business has stayed strong as she has seen more people inclined to to use an older bike as opposed to buying a new one.

Light Street Cycles spent six months at 1000 Light St. and about 18 years at 1015 Light St. before calling 1124 Light St. home for the last nine years.

When asked about her feelings on closing her store and figuring out what’s next, Troutner simply said, “It’s an adventure.”

Baltimore Book Festival and Light City Teaming Up Next Year For 10-Day Festival

In 2018, Light City took place at the Inner Harbor from April 14th to April 21st and Baltimore Book Festival took place from September 28th to 30th.

Illuminating Baltimore with literature and ideas during the day and world-class light art and performances at night, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) announces that it is uniting two of its marquee events: Baltimore Book Festival and Light City. The two events come together as one spectacular festival from Friday, November 1-Sunday, November 10, 2019 to create ten days of a one-of-a-kind international event at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

“Uniting the Baltimore Book Festival and Light City provides benefits artistically, operationally and financially for BOPA and the City of Baltimore while meeting our mission to use the arts, in all forms, to create a more vibrant city. At the same time we provide an illuminating extended experience for residents and visitors—truly a win-win for everyone,” said Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts Chief Executive Officer Donna Drew Sawyer.

The festivals move to November in conjunction with the end of daylight savings time to provide visitors with a greater opportunity to view the light art installations earlier in the evening and to engage more authors as most new books are being released in mid-autumn by publishers.

The Baltimore Book Festival, a celebration of the literary arts, features author appearances and book signings, exhibitors and bookseller tents, readings on multiple stages, children’s activities and cooking demonstrations. Light City, a festival of light, music and innovation, features BGE Light Art Walk at its center with awe-inspiring light art installations, performances, concerts, a fun-filled family zone and more. By uniting with Light City, the 24^th annual Baltimore Book Festival will be the conference portion of the event addressing contemporary, innovative and historical issues through conversations, Q&A sessions, panel discussions and workshops.

In the coming months, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts will be announcing the details of the united festivals including speakers and performers. Information sessions for residents to contribute ideas and discover how to participate will take place in January, February and March. Applications for performing artists, food vendors, booksellers, exhibitors, and presenting authors open Wednesday, January 9, 2019 for all of BOPA’s 2019 festivals – Artscape, Light City and the Baltimore Book Festival.

Second Phase of Construction at Cross Street Market Begins Next Week, Several Businesses to Close

Starting next week the entire Cross Street Market, other than Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood at the S. Charles St. entrance, will be closed for renovations. The eastern section of Cross Street Market has been closed since April for construction. Caves Valley Partners (CVP) is leading the $8-million renovation of the 31,800 sq. ft., block-long market that runs from Light St. to S. Charles St. in Federal Hill.

Currently a construction wall stands at the end of Nunally’s Brother’s Choice Meats stall. On the other side of the wall, which makes up about 60% of the market, construction is underway on the section of the market spanning to Light St. Between Nick’s and the construction wall, Steve’s Lunch, Nunnally Brother’s Choice Meats, and The Sweet Shoppe have been operating in recent months. There are also several vacant stalls. Construction on this section of the Cross Street Market – between the current construction wall and Nick’s – will be closed for renovations.

The Sweet Shoppe has already packed up and will be building a new stall in the renovated portion of Cross Street Market. Steve’s Lunch is still open and will close after Saturday. They are also constructing a new stall in the renovated portion of the market. The first renovated portion of the market is expected to open in the next couple of months.

Nunnally Brothers is still open, but is closing the business at Cross Street Market after 143 years this weekend. Owner Brett Nunnally will be joining his brother Mark Nunnally at his store, Package Deals Plus, at 2830 S. Hanover St. They have not ruled out a return to Federal Hill in the future.

Nick’s will remain open, but the business is currently involved in a lease dispute with CVP. A court hearing for this issue has been scheduled for Monday.

As demolition of this section of the market will begin soon, CVP and its contractor McKenzie will likely be building another construction wall at the end of Nick’s space. CVP is hoping to complete the entire project next year.

When Phase 1A of the redeveloped Cross Street Market opens in the coming months, it will feature Annapolis-based Ceremony Coffee, Steve’s Lunch, The Sweet Shoppe, and the return of Fenwick Meats.

Phase 1B, which is expected to open around April or May of 2019, will welcome new stalls including Burger Bar, Rice Crook, Sobeachy, and Phubs. Smoke, which hosted a pop-up stall for about five months in the early part of this year, will also return to Cross Street Market in Phase 1B.

Cross Street Market will have one bar dedicated to craft beer, one bar dedicated to wine, and one bar dedicated to craft cocktails. CVP’s leasing team at Cana Development told SouthBMore.com that most of the spaces have been leased and that there is a waiting list of potential tenants. More announcements will be released in the near future.

The new design of the Cross Street Market features a lot of new windows bringing in natural light, a polished concrete floor, black ceilings, a middle aisle, and six common seating areas.

On the outside of the market, the painted cinderblock side exterior is being sandblasted to give it a gray look. It will also feature new signage and eventually awnings. The entrances to Cross Street Market on Light St. and S. Charles St. will have a retro 1950s Cross Street Market look with a neon sign and a painted sign. An outdoor seating area and a new sidewalk around the perimeter is also planned.

9/10 Condition Sneaker Boutique Relocating from Pigtown to Federal Hill

Business is good at 9/10 Condition Sneaker Boutique as the store has outgrown its retail space for the second time in the last two years. 9/10 is relocating from an 1,800 sq. ft. space at 775 Washington Blvd. in Pigtown to a 2,800 sq. ft. space at 1123 Light St. in Federal Hill. The Pigtown location closed last Sunday and the Federal Hill location will open tomorrow.

9/10 specializes in sneakers and offers apparel, jerseys, vintage clothes, and streetwear brands. The majority of the inventory at the store is previously-owned items that are in very good condition. Customers can buy, sell, and trade at 9/10. Owner Roberto Fontanez said that much of his inventory comes from his clients and noted that many of the sneakers were worn just a few times.

Fontanez, a Pigtown resident, launched 9/10 in 2016. He spent many years working at Finish Line before opening his first location in Towson. The Pigtown location opened in January 2017.

Fontanez began buying up shoes for his inventory in the months leading up to his first store. He noted that most of his inventory cannot be found at other shoe stores.

Popular shoes at 9/10 include vintage Nikes, Nike Air Jordans, Adidas’ Ultra Boost, NMD, and Yeezy. 9/10 now has more than 1,000 shoes in its store, and struggled to find room for them all at the Pigtown location.

Fontanez told SouthBMore.com that while he has a strong following locally, customers have stopped by his store from out of the state and from other countries. He credits much of this far-reaching exposure to his social media following. 9/10 has more than 16,700 followers on Instagram and followers will often try to reserve pairs of sneakers in the comments section. 9/10 has also been visited by professional athletes.

While Fontanez loved his location in Pigtown, he is excited about his new home in Federal Hill which will be surrounded by many other businesses. “I’m excited to tell our customers to spend the day here and go to nearby restaurants,” said Fontanez.

Pigtown Main Street Interim Executive Director Kim Lane called Fontanez a “wonderful” business owner and said that Federal Hill is lucky to get his business. She was sad to see his store leave Pigtown, but excited for the growth of Fontanez’s business.

Fontanez said the space at 1123 Light St. will provide a larger showroom and more storage for his inventory. He said it was turnkey-ready and did not require any other renovations besides setting up his store. The storefront’s last tenant was Aww Baby Organics, which relocated to Savage. The space was also home to multiple shoe stores over the years.

9/10’s former Pigtown location is now available for lease.

9/10 will be open Monday to Saturday from 12pm to 8pm and Sunday from 12pm to 6pm. Fontanez has one employee.

Nunnally Brothers Closing at Cross Street Market as Focus Shifts to Hanover Street Store

After 143 years at the Cross Street Market, Nunnally Brothers Choice Meats will close its stall and focus on another family business, Package Deals Plus, located at 2830 S. Hanover St. The 4,000 sq. ft. store is adjacent to the Vietnam Veterans Bridge, Harbor Hospital, and Middle Branch Park. Nunnally Brothers’ last day at Cross Street Market will be on Saturday.

Nunnally Brothers, now in its fifth generation of business in Baltimore, was started by Robert E. Nunnally. His great-great-grandson Chad Nunnally is now the general manager at Package Deals Plus. Nunnally Brothers Choice Meats is run by Brett Nunnally who will be joining his brother’s business, Package Deals Plus, next week. Package Deals Plus was started 15 years ago by Mark Nunnally and business partner David Vogelsang.

Brett Nunnally said he was interested in staying at the Cross Street Market but did not want to shut the business down for several months while a renovation of his section of the market took place and risk losing his customers. The eastern section of Cross Street Market is currently under construction and another phase of construction will begin next week at the section of the market between Nick’s Inner Harbor Seafood and the construction wall that was built adjacent to Nunnally Brothers. Nick’s will remain open during this next round of construction.

Brett Nunnally noted that business has been declining at Cross Street Market and that a majority of his business came from East and West Baltimore residents. He was thankful that developer Caves Valley Partners (CVP) allowed Nunnally Brothers to stay open during construction.

Brett Nunnally said that the closing at Cross Street Market is very sad and that it was hard to talk about. He and Mark Nunnally noted that they spent half their lives underneath the Nunnally Brothers Choice Meats neon signs at the Cross Street Market. Those signs have been sold to a local businessman who wanted them as a collectible. Some of the remaining Nunnally Brothers stall equipment will be sold and some will be scrapped.

While the Nunnally brothers are sad about closing their stall, it creates an opportunity for them to work together again, which they are looking forward to. Brett Nunnally is hoping his customers will follow him over to Package Deals Plus.

While Nunnally Brothers had a to keep the focus on meats due to market restrictions, they are allowed to sell a lot more items at Package Deals Plus. Along with a large selection of meat and poultry, Package Deals Plus also sells seafood including crab meat, fresh fish, and shrimp, along with marinades, sauces, spices, eggs, bread, a small selection of produce, frozen foods, vegetables, and some basic grocery items. They are hoping to expand their selection in the future with a more of a small grocery store concept with a stronger focus on fresh produce and additional grocery items.

The Nunnally brothers have not ruled out a return to Federal Hill and hope to open additional locations in the future.

Mark Nunnally told SouthBMore.com that he loves the location at 2830 S. Hanover St. and says it feels like they are in a park. The storefront looks out to Port Covington, the Middle Branch Park, the Middle Branch waterfront, and the Downtown skyline. Mark Nunnally said he likes being “30 seconds” from I-95 and noted he can check the traffic patterns by looking out the windows of his store. Package Deals Plus also has a free parking lot in front of the store.

Mark Nunnally and Vogelsang said business has been great at Package Deals Plus. “It’s one of the few places you can go where the owners are behind the counter, serving you, and will take your stuff out to your car,” said Mark Nunnally.
